Along .toward the first part of Septem- ber there is a slight but noticeable change in the atmosphere. Every per- son does not notice it, but any farmer or anyone with the slightest nose for weather, can sense the change. The change comes with the going cf the birds. The air has an invigorating, nippy effect on one's person. The leaves are just slightly and delicately tinted and are somewhat velvety to the touch. The squirrels and the chipmonks are scram- bling about the ground and trees hurry- ing up their last minute preparations for the long winter. The going of the birds is always a sad but beautiful parting, for everyone, young and old, hates to see them go. During the first weeks of migration, the sky, by day, is filled with birds winging their Ways south to warmer parts, the trees, by night, are laden with scolding, fighting, noisome birds resting after a day's flight. The blackbirds are the first to go. These black marauders travel in huge, unbelievable - in - size flocks. No one is sorry to see them go. At about the same time the robins and the wild cana- ries pack up their gay tunes and happy chirpings and head south to the cherry country. This is the saddest parting, as everyone enjoys hearing the chir-ruping of the robin in the early morning, and the music of the wild canary. A rare but beautiful sight is a flight of scarlet and blue tanagers, or jays and orioles all heading south in one flock. They quite often fly together. I say rare sight be- cause no one sees them go, but lucky is the man who sees a late flying group searching for a resting place in the early dawn. - With the going of the birds there comes another change. What is it? It is noticeable above the regular, everyday noises of town or country. The stillness, that's it! One especially notices it in the parks. No longer is the chirping of the robin heard in the large, leafy fnaples, or the scolding of the iaybirds high in the tall, bushy-topped elms. One does not hear the musical notes of the wild canary as he flits from poplar to syca- more, from sycamore to oak. All one hears are the everyday sounds tl'at everyone is used to and the chirptng and scolding of the sparrows tthey stay to brave the winterl as they wrangle among themselves, the squirrels, and the chipmonks over scraps some thoughtful person has thrown among the leaves. The last and most complete change occurs with the coming of the frosts. The first frost, usually a light one, serves as Mother Nature's warning to late- staying birds and to the farmer who is tardy with his harvesting, threshing, or shucking his late corn. The first frost also tends to bring out more vividly the colors in the leaves and plants. As the frosts become more severe, the color in the leaves turns a dirty brown and the leaves lose their soft, silky feeling. They become stiff and crumbly and drop off the trees in huge numbers, leaving the trees bare and the ground strewn with leaves. eludson Stone ODE TO MY FATHER Father, my love for you is stronger than the strongest mountains, Deeper than the deepest oceans, and infinite as God. You have taught me what is right and good, And kind and just, worthy and sincere. Let your memory be my guardian in all that I attempt. If it be good, may it bring good to all, That they will bless my name, and I in turn shall bless your own. If it be bad, then cast your wrath upon me, That sorrow may prevail, That it will shame and haunt my life and punish me in full. -Louis Gaitan. 'ik MUSIC As I was sitting on the grass, Beneath a verdant tree, A soft, dulcet, and soothing sound, Came floating to my ear. It was a hymn a choir did sing, ln giving thanks to God. No better way could it be done, Than lift their voices filled in song. In peace and war, in love and praise, 'Tis music that the world will seek, And in the heart of every man, Its vibrant notes are heard. eLouis Gaitan. Tix' THE ROAD I wend my way down the long road of life, Treading the path way of trouble and strife, Going my way midst the onrushing crowd, Doing my best, the best l'm allowed. Still when I rest, as I plow and I plod Giving my praise to Almighty God, I know in my heart when I finish my walk, I shallugo home to God to adore and to ta . -Fred Robinson. TRUE LIFE Oh what fools these humans are, Can't they see what's going on, Or must they wait until they've Qone Unto a heaven ere they see What little trouble there need be? lf they would only stop to think Or all the wrongs they do, They fight and kill and drink From the cup of hatred, too. Can't they see they must not Do all these hellish things? For soon, there will be little ought To make them feel the stings Oi all the wrongs they've Wrought. -Dorothy Fox. il? LITTLE NUT SHELL BOAT CDreams of Childhood? The splendid galleon tossed over a foam- ing sea. Her captain was a little worm, but steered with gallantry. The crew were ants that managed to row in perfect time. The sails were made of spider web, all woven so fine. Upon the tower watching, a bumble bee stopped watch To tell of storms acoming, or islands, ports, or such. The ship's cook, was a cricket that sung all through the day. And when the captain ordered, he never had his say For long these sailors sailed, with stars to guide their way And when they grew all tired, they came back home to stay. elfelix Salazar. ik ADIEU When I have done my given task And drop my heavy load, My soul will soar, and I will spread My Winqs and fly to God. -- Louis Gaitan.
