'be PRINCIPAL HERBERT S WOOD PRIIICIPIILS IIIESSIIGE HERE is a lone Jumper tree on a shoulder of Mt San Antonio Old Baldy to most of us whose stubby solid trunk and short gnarled branches tell the story of a lifetirne battle against the winds and ice of wint r and the heat and winds of summer lt is a remarkable example of tremendous strength developed through long and continued resist ance to destructive forces. lf a tree from the valley which had been shel- tered from wind, snow, and heat were transplanted to this exposed place on the mountain, it could not survive the first winter. lt had not been condi- tioned and hardened by adversity. lts fibres and cells had not become tough and resistant through the years but had become soft and weak and the tree had not built up the strength required to meet the terrific battle with the elements Each one of you is like that tree on the mountain You must grow and develop by meeting and overcoming the obstacles and problems you meet not by avoiding them Each prob lem solved, each obstacle overcome makes the next one easier to van- quish. An old mountaineer once said: lf you are lookin' for wood that will stand all the iolts and strains, cut it from a tree that's been exposed, for storms tear and twist, but they sure do build character. Herbert S. Wood, Principal. Seven
