THEY ARE ALL GONE They are all gone and I alone Am solitary with reflected thought. Through hallowed halls a mellowed tone, Recasts the joys of youthful days. And once again each hour resounds Each gleaming smile, Each Virgil muse of life rebounds. Oh precious hours, Now lost to time, Enchant me ever with your powers. VVhere have they gone those forms of youth, Whose yearning hearts and memories, Have lost their theme the simple truth, VVhose hearts with mine long for these scenes As worlds on worlds will pass beyond, To them also, My sacred world of dreams is gone. Oh mysterious life, Reveal to me. The splendor found in living dreams. -'Tl1c'otfw'c' Dumllrlxolz SE IOR LITERATURE ECHOES OON we shall put our many days of school life among the echoes of the PQISI. lt will be with a great deal of pleasure that we recall those pleasant moments, little insignificant adventures to others, but to us treasures to be tenderly laid away in our hope- chest of life. Even now we hear another call to new surround- ings, a different atmosphere of life. This call carries with it a challenge to meet and conquer new prob- lems and new obstacles. And meet and conquer them we will, for we shall have those dim but persistent voices of the past urging us on, guiding us along the road that we must follow to gain for ourselves new treasures in the future walks of life. -ALICE Zsxtamxo if if 1 K WRITING AN ESSAY HE writing of an essay takes many steps. The essayist takes note of man, woman, and child and, keeping his eyes and ears open, finds many pregnant texts imbedded in the commonplace of life, and then, out of what he sees and hears, weaves his essay. The essay, as a literary form, resembles the lyric in so far as it is moulded by a central mood. Given a mood, and the essay, from the first to the last, grows around it. The essay should be pure literature as the poem is pure literature. The essayist plays with his subject, now in a whim- sical, now in a grave, and now in a meloncholy mood. His main gift is an eye to discover the suggestiveness of common things. Beyond the vital hint, his discov- eries are not fastened to their titles. He takes up the most trivial subject and winds it around to become great questions over which the serious like to brood. There is no lack of subject matter. The essayist gives you his thoughts and lets you know how he came to think thus. Of the essayist, when his mood is com- municative, you obtain a full picture. Thus we see that an essay is literally the easy part of any literature. It is the simplest thing in the world to write. There is but the necessity of keeping alive and setting down in words on paper what you think and have seen-and there is your essay. -Liawts Bonscmz SYMPHONIES UNDER THE STARS VERY year I look forward with great anticipa- tion to the Symphonies Under the Stars in the Hollywood Bowl. They are a source of much enjoy- ment to me. I can not picture a lovelier scene than the Holly- wood Bowl on a summer night with the curves of the surrounding hills sharply etched against an ebony sky. There is scarcely a sound from the vast audience as the music of the symphony reaches us, accompanied by crickets in the distance. Every once in a while the darkness is relieved by the sudden flare of a match. Here and there I can see tiny points of light from cigarettes. Everything is calm and peace- ful. Troubles seem as far away as the stars under which we sit. The music is like a mist, blotting out harsh realities. A cool breeze brings with it sweet fragrances from nearby blossoms. I can look up at the twinkling stars as I dream, lulled by some masterpiece that has enchanted thous- ands of people all over the world. Each intoxicating symphony makes me respond differently. There is a lump in my throat and tears well up in my eyes as emotion over the great beauty of the scene wells up within me. We in the Hollywood Bowl are in a world of our own. The noise of traffic on the nearby busy boule- vards does not reach us, and distant lights are the only reminders that we are in the vicinity of a great city. Time seems to have stopped, but unfortunately the music does not go on forever. As we leave, I realize that this perfect night and the Symphonies Under the Stars will be among my most treasured memories. -AUDREY Frusmii if ii il 1 SWEET BIRD Sweet little bird, Sweet little song, Sweet you are, Both bird and song. The shadows were stretching themselves sleepingly over the ground. Deathly silence enshrouded the cluster of ramshaekled build- ings. Suddenly the silence was broken by the hacking sounds of steel against flesh. The sickening sounfl came from a house almost hidden by the shadows. ln one of the rooms of this house there was a heavy muscular man with the swarthy complexion of a foreigner. in his hand was a death wielding instru- ment of death, shaped like an ax. Blood was dripping from it to form miniature pools of crimson on the lioor. Though the room was unusually chilly. beads of perspiration glittered on his forehead as he per- formed his gruesome task. Ir appeared that he wanted to cut the blood smeared body into several paris be- lore disposing of it. Suddenly a woman's shrill voice rasped through the silence, Hnrryl Hurry. She had been standing in the shadows on the op- posite side of the room wringing her hands nervous- ly. The blows fell faster, but this still did not satisfy her. The music soothes away all my bad nat- ure and my sadness when I feel blue. Any bad mood of mine can always be dissolved in the liquid melody of a line symphony. I lose myself in the intricacies of the music and am carried away by its sheer beauty. Music suggests to me everything that is line and makes sorrows and the discords of life seem wholly in the past. The future spreads ahead unblemished and promisingly bright. Yes, music is balm for the soul. At other times a book is the best company. Often I can find some fine philosophy that will brighten life for me and make me feel that, after all, everything will turn out for the best. I have decided that to be alone with my thoughts is often much better than to make others miserable by my bad moods. It makes it possible for my life to be more harmonious. I can unravel the tangles in my own affairs if I think over the solution of my problems alone. After being alone for a while, I can emerge from my solitude ready to laugh at life's minor tragedies and take them on the chin. Then the company of other people is really a pleasure and a treat. If you find yourself irritable and moody and too ready to find fault, go off by yourself. You will soon stop ranting and raging if you have no audience. Listen to some fine music, read something worth- while, then see how much more you'll appreciate and enioy life. -AUDREY Fiusistu SCHOOL LIFE SUNSET TIME IN SVVITZERLAND The golden rays of sunshine hide Behind a lofty mountain side, The herd-boy and his goats have gone. The shadows creep and then grow long. An echo is heard somewhere in the west Calling the people home to rest, The mountain eagle home does fly Racing the vanishing sun in the sky. Quiet are these mountain heights While far below the village lights Twinkle in the silent air As darkness settles everywhere. A lonely echo sounds afar, And with it comes the evening star The echo grows then dies away, Dies with the light of the dying day. The Garfield boys came to life, however, in the next meet and de- feated the strong Franklin squad 14-ll in a very close and exciting meet. The Bulldogs continued their winning streak by whitewashing the Lincoln group 25-0. Only one set was lost by Garfield. The final tussle of the season was against the Roosevelt Rough Riders and Garfield was defeated I6-9. There are many lettermen returning next year and the team should prove to be one of the strongest in the North- ern League. if If fi? :lf :Xi Simple Sarah wants to know if those people North. As a rule, each school has a playday at home and is a guest at one playday at another school. In this way, every school has a chance to take part in two playdays each semester. On April 29, Garfield, Fremont, and Roosevelt were guests at Lincoln High School. The games played were basketball, baseball and volleyball. Garfield was hostess to Gardena and Belmont on May 9. Archery, tennis, speedball, baseball, and volleyball were played. Garfield was victorious in a tennis match, two speedball games, and a volleyball game. Most playdays are concluded by refreshments, danc- ing. and a program. Playdays make it possible for girls from all over the city who have the same inter- ests to become acquainted. This often results in last- ing and worth-while friendships. at as ae as Sellishness is an excellent weapon for suicide. GIRLS' SPORTS GIRLS' ATHLETIC ORGANIZATIONS HE Physical Education Department provides three athletic organizations for girls-the Girls' Athletic Association, the Letter Club, and the Archery Club. The purpose of the G.A.A. is to promote the high- est possible standard of sportsmanship and school loy- alty. To become a member of this club, a girl must have 50 points earned in athletics. They may be earned by coming out one season for hockey, basket- ball, speedball, baseball, or archery. Through being a member of the G.A.A. the girls become better acquainted with each other, and they see each other as they really are. The worries of the day are put aside on the athletic field, and everyone is out with the fullness of life to have a good time. The Letter Club is composed of those girls who have earned 500 points in athletics and have good sportsmanship, the ability to play, and a vital interest in athletics. For each additional 200 points after a letter is received a star is granted. The greatest num- ber of stars that has been received is seven. The active membership is now 33. These points may be earned through scholarship, athletics, executive ofhces, and I -E32 'I W 74,4 ' E i S' I ft'-7?3'if5 'F service in the gym department. It is the ambition of every G.A.A. member to become a part of the Letter Club. The Archery Club is rapidly rising to a high posi- tion in the realm of Garheld sports. At present, it has twelve active members. The Archery Club meets oncf- a week and shoots a full lunioi Columbia Round .it forty, thirty, and twenty yards. Individual members of the afore-mentioned class have certain dear gifts from which they reluctantly part, to give to prominent Iunior High School mem- bers whom they are leaving and who need these things much more than they. Iessie luanita Lewis is glad to leave her sweet and sunny disposition to Wilma Worley. Tom Dow bequeathes his great ability to get here on time and his excellent grades to Louis Glist. The terrific gum chewing record of the A-9 class which has rested with Esther Mae West will be given to juanita Bryant. Darlene Becker is going to take her good grades and her ability to play the accordion to El Monte High. The B-9 class is so smart Darlene feels that they will not need these things. Hear Ye, Hear Yel Gerald McKeon will gladly will his magnetic personality and his jokes about Ethiopia to Howard Haymes. Don't tell anyone, but Charlotte Vick has regret- fully consented to leave her demure manners to Bar- bara Giovinetti. The ability to imitate Ioe E. Mr. Melvin Iackson is regretfully leaving his in- fiuence on the feminine hearts in the capable hands of Maurice Schartz. When Adolph Brown graduated in S36 he willed his weakness for pretty maidens to Bob Sinclair. Bob said he should like to keep it, but he will leave his mighty physique to Tarzan. Doris Eaton does not know it or maybe she would not want to give it up, but her footlight swagger is going to Maxine White. Eugene Gablehouse has advertised that his beloved matches will go to anyone who applies for them. LASS Iuanita Davis is willing to donate part of her height and willowy figure to Lucille Rabiola. The good grades and swell disposition of Maxine Harris will go to Rose Kezman. Evelyn Manwaring feels that her good grades will be of great benefit to lim Thomas, and Iames Hollo- well is glad to render a service to the school by leav- ing his good Algebra grades to Bud Everly. Ima Geen Hayes is overjoyed to be able to leave her freckles to Cora Lee Kyker. Does Elouise Iolley need a grand singing voice? Then Eva Stark will leave her hers. Virginia Bancroft is willing to leave her quiet lady- like manners to all the rowdies of the Iunior High School. In order to save Ruth Cooper so much trouble, Helen Blasdell informs me that Ruth may as well have her flaming red hair.
