S I ff ,, 4 5 9 -x E The first Seattle school strike in history and the great turnover in staff didn't exactly help to get school off to a smooth start, but the ad- ministration staff worked hard to get it all to- gether. They faced obstacles such as changes in the laws regarding student funds, making planning for activities difficult, and having to do last minute rescheduling because of changes in staff size. But in spite of all this, the administration got school going on the right track and this year proved to be one of the best. Along with the new teachers this year came a few new subjects! Picketing! Bargaining! and Negotiating! Usually the students would have been in class the first two weeks, but this year the school district was. The teachers re- quired much testing of them and they finally passed with Hying colors. After that the teachers began teaching the students and they've done a great job. i Our secretaries are a very important part of our school. They do everything from keeping memos and typing to making sure that all ath- letes are eligible to play. They also help teach students secretarial work in the office and are always there to lend us support in our school activities. You may not know it but our counselors carry a lot of responsibilities. Not only do they help with our personal and school prob- lems. but they also provide us with college, vocational, and military information. They help organize test schedules, apprenticeship programs, and keep track of each studentls credits. They also are there to help each of us select the appropriate courses and electives we need to prepare us for graduation. The coiumselors- are continuously working every day to help the students, and it's a good thing to know that they're there whenever we need help. i'Someone to talk toy' is how the job of the Human Relations Aides could be described, but that's not all they do. The aides also help with registration, tutor, and organize staff ac- tivities to generate camaraderie. Their many valuable services have helped everyone at Garfield to become more unified. At the sound of three rings security guards rush to respond to help students with prob- lcms, assist the administration with keeping students in class and violence levels down. They feel that this year there are fewer prob- lems to deal with compared to past years, as the students, faculty and administration are working closer together with security. Also, the students seem to be resolving their own 6 Bullness . . . Roscoe B. Bass, Principal . ..,. , ,.,.. i M-I Qt Richard Fain, Vice Principal of the Dogs 1 Sybil Brown WCC principal L. fm as ,,.. Nutrition and good cooking is whats on the minds of Ckl1'fi6lLl'S cooking staff. This year four varieties of meals were provided for the students, and thc staff spends many hours preparing for these meals. Though the custodians are often ig- nored, their presence always shows. The clean walls, and waxed floors show that they are constantly on the job. But cleaning the school isn't all the custo- dians do. They also perform maintenance re- pairs such as changing light bulbs, set- ting clocks, and repairing lockers. They may be ignored, but they are also indispensable. They have proved themselves to be a very important part of our school. The newly built Learning Resource Center is in full gear this year. It's a bet- ter atmosphere to study in: more mate- rials for research and the students have been more serious and academically minded in their use of the school li- brary. The lihrarians feel if the students can continue to take care of the library it will remain an outstanding facility for study. Clarence Acox Music Dept. This year's senior class has been unique in many ways. They have been outstanding in academics, sports, and spirit. With the help of the senior class officers they managed to put on this year's homecoming assembly, ran the concession stands at the home basketball games, sold candy canes dur- ing the Christmas season and sponsored other activities throughout the school year. Now after twelve long, seemingly endless years, they've finally reached their goal-graduation-and although they will be leaving Garfield the memories will stay with them: the joy, the agony, the triumph, -and the tears. Under the direction of Charles Terpenning, this year's choir has proven to be an important part of the music department. i Unlike last years' choir, they sung ' more than just one type of music, so thereis more of a variety. Some of the places where they performed While traveling on the road included, Madrona Community Center, Pacific School, and on the Christmas Ship on Lake Washington. Although this year's choir is con- siderably smaller in niunber than those of the past years, it doesnit seem to make much difference for their singing talent does more than just make up for their small size. Get on down with those sweet sounds! 48 arfielcl dies Gettin into the Swim Garfield went through a lot of changes this year. There were a lot of new things going on, among them was the first year of a woman's softball team. Although the season started off slow for the young ladies, they were still able to beat one of the best teams around and maintain a re- spectable record . . The team consisted of four seniors, three ju- niors, five sophomores, and three freshmen-all of whom were either a beginner or an inter- mediate softball player. The coach and the players are both con- fident that next year will be a much better season, for not only will they be more experi- enced at softball, but they will also have more experience at playing together as a team. They had a great season last year losing only one game, but this year they came back with goals to win state. And they figured out a Way it could be done: to play at a high proficiency level, and deal with crisis without breaking down. The one major crisis that the team dealt with was the teachers strike. The players were subjected to a two and a half day lay-off. Then when the strike was over they were scheduled to play in three days, Many people felt this was the reason they lost their opening game to Shoreline. After that the Bulldogs demolished nine straight opponents win- ning the Central Division Championship and qualifying for the Metro Championship. They did this by winning two games in five days, they did not fall short this year. The dogs defeated Roosevelt 14-0 and qualified for the state quarter finals Where they stomped Interlake 25-14 making them the first Metro team to advance to the semi- finals. They lost that game to Snohomish 14-8 one of the most exciting games in the state but went on to finish 53rd in the state. .-Xl Roberts Head Coach Doug liickcrson Def. llead Coach Robert Lee Def. line Coach Ron Davis Off. Io ca Sprint . . Both Mens and Womens teams have a lot of experienced people turning out this year. They both will be facing strong competition in the Southern Div. with teams such as Frank- lin and Sealth. There's good morale among the team because the members are hard working and a lot more determined to do their best. Fred Beckwith, headcoach of the mens team feels very con- fident of the mens and womens mile relay. Greg Brashear, the coach of the Womens team feels that there should be some of Garfieldls participants in the State finals. Due to revise and striker rules, it will be harder to hold onto enough points to get a varsity letter. Both coaches feel their teams are very strong. A. Allen, M. Bland, M. Fitch, W. Cal- houn, N. Exchange, a word literally meaning the trading of one thing for anotherf, Carfield's exchange clubs have expanded on this definition to include not only the trading of visitations between schools, but more im- portantly learning to meet new people, learning about commtmication and organiza- tion, and fostering understand- ing between different schools and communities. Because half of the members met at first lunch and half at second, there were two sepa- rate Exchange Clubs this year, each with its own interests and plans, but both enjoyed the ad- venture of traveling to new and exciting places and, learning a little bit more about how the world goes on outside their own lives. A thanks is never enough, but THANKQYOUU The 76-77 Arrow staff was a very good one'. I and the rest of the together staff have learned a lot. The people that work on the staff are the best and I am glad I had the Cl lal1C6 to meet and work with all of them. Some of the staff will be leaving and new people will have to be taught their jobs. I'll still be here to try and carry on the work they have started and tried so hard to keep going, with the helpof our very capable advisor, Vicky Muuray, I'm sure we'll be able to. As the editor and being the youngest the Arrow staff has had, QI feel like the oldestj I hope I have made a lot of friends and not enemies. The only thought I can leave the new editor is: A Be ready to give yourself and your time totally, Even though at times it seems it may be for nothing. If you canit give totally don't do it at all. You'll have to listen to a lot of things'you wouldn't normally listen to or' take. , COOD LUCK- ' ' ' Cyndra L. jones Editor-in-Chief For the Arrow staff of Garfield High-School. 159 A I 1 www' b 1 , ' m Q - .. - ,' ' Q 1 f w f' - A - f, . w X - .,, 1 . . li, A- - . ii b - V, b A U 4 , SI bwIythb night blooms, unfvrlimg flowers of cl6nIQness,' -iioveiing 3 Ilwatrellisecl sky, bbwming W of blackness lJl'1jbnClilW 2s ss s b - iwcheclbwithsprigs M b palecmcl budding stars.-afmnIQ Davis ' sf' ' f . 1 , A , N . b, b in O M N X G, cb My xqxfftliygrw O ,gi A QQZIQ ,U , W 3 'Q if 'CQ Cob XW 59 S9 Y SDS' Jfi we Wa N Cv Q Us qw Sf 1 W V5 1' QQ XZX Q Q 3 555 QQ Q11 4 42 Q3 ,W cy - 4 QUSCU Wm Www!
