DEDII MILESTONES On October 10, 1888, Mr. Hanselman was born on a farm near Georgetown, Ohio. His education began at Sinai Grade School, a one-room rural school that held him captive for eight long years. After graduation at the tender age of thirteen, he traveled to the county seat to take the qualifying examination for entrance to the class of '07 in Mt. Orab lOhiol High School. In June of the same year he graduated, the young Mr. Hanselman set out with a sheepskin in one hand and a suitcase in the other to enroll in the Summer School of Ohio Northern University. By not pausing even for vacations, the year-round scholar was able to graduate in three years. Pictures of big, red and iuicy Jonathan apples attracted our future principal to Ellensburg, where he first made up his mind to teach. Apparently he enioyed the hunting and fishing in Central Washington, because he stayed at Ellensburg High until 1915, when the bright lights of the big city attracted him to the shores of Elliott Bay. His first assignment in Seattle was to teach Physics at Broadway, at that time the largest high school l28OO studentsl in the state. ln 1920, Mr. Hanselman's good friend, George Porter, invited him to teach Math at the brand new East High, then a small wooden building located on the left corner of the present campus. In Autumn of 1922, the small building was named James A. Garfield High School, the present building was completed, and Mr. Hanselman became Head of the Math Department. When the office of vice-principal was created in 1926, Mr. Porter once again called on his trusted friend to fill a vacancy. Upon the retirement of Mr. Porter in 1941, Mr. Hanselman became principal.
