COOKS A D CUSTODIANS Q First Row: Marguerite Herrman, Mildred Payne and Charlotte Schulz. Second Row: Alice Huseman, Flor- ence Hutchins, Esther Knox, Head Cook, and Bessy Nuber. Our cooks were a magical group of women. lt took an oversized hat for these magicians to perform the miracles of the lunchroom each day, but miracles they did perform, and the long lines of ravenous sudents attested to the fact. Five days a week for the entire school year, a sample of their artistry in the kitchen could be bought for iust 35c a meal. The custodians hada cure-all for every crippled obiect: leaky pipes, sputtering radiators, or faulty thermostats. The school mat- ron kept our windows and water fountains clean. Mr. Gamble, head custodian, was known by all for his friendly words and helping hands, typifying the Garfield Spirit. ll
