TRIBUTE Mr. Hanselman, along with the graduating class of l959, will walk the halls of Garfield for the last time this year, Every closet and corner of this building is familiar to him, iust as every person who ever went to Garfield is familiar with his extraordinary vitality and look of determination that quickly fades into a friendly chuckle. Through the Roaring Twenties, the hard Depression years, turbulent World War ll and the Cold War, his responsibility for the welfare and education of Garfield students has grown, iust as the school has grown. In his early years at Garfield, Mr. Hanselman realized that the special quality of education Garfield provides is the result of something more than classrooms, teachers, laboratories, and books. lt is determined also by intangible factors: spirit, tradition, atmosphere, and experience. One cannot adequately describe such complex intangibles in a few words, but Mr. Hanselman's goal has always been to make --the Garfield spirit one of tolerance, independence, and respect for the individual, --the Garfield tradition one of good teaching and scholarship, --the Garfield atmosphere one of purposefulness within an informal, friendly student-teacher relation- ship, --the Garfield experience a powerful influence for maturity through learning and living for three years with students from diverse backgrounds. For every studentand faculty member who wanted it, Mr. Hanselman has had a sympathetic ear. But he has given much more to us: valuable experience in learning and working with others, in learning how to manage affairs demo- cratically, and in developing capacity for scholarship and leadership. He has stretched and challenged us to make the most of our abilities for the sake of ourselves and what we can give to the world of the future. He has dedicated his life to education. We of the i959 Arrow Staff dedicate this yearbook to him.
