His education began at Sinai Grade School, a one-room rural school that held him captive for eight long years. After graduation at the tender age of thirteen, he traveled to the county seat to take the qualifying examination for entrance to the class of '07 in Mt. Orab lOhiol High School. In June of the same year he graduated, the young Mr. Hanselman set out with a sheepskin in one hand and a suitcase in the other to enroll in the Summer School of Ohio Northern University. By not pausing even for vacations, the year-round scholar was able to graduate in three years. Pictures of big, red and iuicy Jonathan apples attracted our future principal to Ellensburg, where he first made up his mind to teach. Apparently he enioyed the hunting and fishing in Central Washington, because he stayed at Ellensburg High until 1915, when the bright lights of the big city attracted him to the shores of Elliott Bay. His first assignment in Seattle was to teach Physics at Broadway, at that time the largest high school l28OO studentsl in the state. ln 1920, Mr. Hanselman's good friend, George Porter, invited him to teach Math at the brand new East High, then a small wooden building located on the left corner of the present campus. In Autumn of 1922, the small building was named James A. Garfield High School, the present building was completed, and Mr. Hanselman became Head of the Math Department. When the office of vice-principal was created in 1926, Mr. Porter once again called on his trusted friend to fill a vacancy. Upon the retirement of Mr. Porter in 1941, Mr. Hanselman became principal. TRIBUTE Mr. Hanselman, along with the graduating class of l959, will walk the halls of Garfield for the last time this year, Every closet and corner of this building is familiar to him, iust as every person who ever went to Garfield is familiar with his extraordinary vitality and look of determination that quickly fades into a friendly chuckle. Through the Roaring Twenties, the hard Depression years, turbulent World War ll and the Cold War, his responsibility for the welfare and education of Garfield students has grown, iust as the school has grown. In his early years at Garfield, Mr. Hanselman realized that the special quality of education Garfield provides is the result of something more than classrooms, teachers, laboratories, and books. lt is determined also by intangible factors: spirit, tradition, atmosphere, and experience. One cannot adequately describe such complex intangibles in a few words, but Mr. Hanselman's goal has always been to make --the Garfield spirit one of tolerance, independence, and respect for the individual, --the Garfield tradition one of good teaching and scholarship, --the Garfield atmosphere one of purposefulness within an informal, friendly student-teacher relation- ship, --the Garfield experience a powerful influence for maturity through learning and living for three years with students from diverse backgrounds. For every studentand faculty member who wanted it, Mr. Hanselman has had a sympathetic ear. But he has given much more to us: valuable experience in learning and working with others, in learning how to manage affairs demo- cratically, and in developing capacity for scholarship and leadership. He has stretched and challenged us to make the most of our abilities for the sake of ourselves and what we can give to the world of the future. He has dedicated his life to education. We of the i959 Arrow Staff dedicate this yearbook to him. -D 'I X153 ' X ,-., v Q ' 'x x Q5 foo C3 ,. Q, 1 X yidvx 'Zig-.SY avg L- Lk L!! NK Ni 5 xl nk I I mn, s. . Our cooks were a magical group of women. lt took an oversized hat for these magicians to perform the miracles of the lunchroom each day, but miracles they did perform, and the long lines of ravenous sudents attested to the fact. Five days a week for the entire school year, a sample of their artistry in the kitchen could be bought for iust 35c a meal. Walter Lightner LeRoy lotz Roy Sand William Griffith Gerald Harman Robley Jackson Harold Guernsey Esther Stoffer Lloyd Gamble Have broom, do travel was the motto of our custodial crew. They also used wrenches, Screwdrivers, and other tools from the do-it-yourself toolroom. The custodians hada cure-all for every crippled obiect: leaky pipes, sputtering radiators, or faulty thermostats. The school mat- ron kept our windows and water fountains clean. Mr. Gamble, head custodian, was known by all for his friendly words and helping hands, typifying the Garfield Spirit. ll ii ' if iwr F CULTY clit Joseph Betz Mathematics Jane Burrough Language Arts l2 Ella Atterberry Nurse Marianne Blenkinsop Edith Calder N . Yet the Arrow Sweatshop seemed to belong to that school of education.. Each staff member tried to draw the utmost from himself and his cohorts by singing, laughing, or talking while adding his contributions to the original and com- plete summary of the past year's events. The result was mayhem to those who didn't know the score, but it really was a system of organized thought control. Head brainwasher and sound-coordinator, Mr. Hardcastle, regulated the volume of work. Pho- tographers, copy-writers and lay-out people, pushed by editor Bill Moffett, transferred their thoughts to paper, while Susanna Kihara kept the typewriters clacking and the picture-mounting crew up to its elbows in glue. 68 -s- 15 H i, gs Sheila Woo Business Manager V T ' 5 liy, aaas, f John Michel Layout Technician fs, :F . Truthful, con- siderate, and iust. Loyal and sincere in friendship. Too noble to speak ill of others. Willing to forgive and forget. Prompt and gracious in obedience. Ready to do all possible service. Quick to appreciate what is done for me. Respectful to my elders. True to the best that is within me that I may become a fine and worthy woman. The apple of anyone's eye was a girl who upheld all of these qualities. The Girls' Club creed was the rule to follow, and it was every girl's iob to take it upon herself to work on the parts where she fell down. The busy Girls' Club officers and members of A.B. and Cabinet tried to set examples for every girl to follow, and from the cIub's various activities and projects throughout the year blossomed the fine, worthy alumnae who personified the traditions of Garfield High School. The officers headed all proiects sponsored by Girls' Club, and the Advisory Board's main duty was to enforce rules and regulations. This was done by patrolling at school and at games. Friendship Day was a new '58 proiect, and instead of the usual Olot Day , a day to honor the basketball players was intro- duced. The football players' big day was when the Cabinet presented Blimey Day . The Cabinet began its year with committee sign-ups in early October. ASEBALL The T959 Bulldog Baseball team, the defending champion, was a team with little experience but much ambition. Although the timber swatters had five returning letter- men, only the Seraile twins, Bill and Dick, had any worthwhile varsity action. The three other lettermen, Roger Croshaw, Mike Krohn, and Ken Gidlof, added their talents and seniority to the team. The shortage of lettermen caused many iuniors to carry the load. Terry Acena, Bill Hill, Bob O'Brien, and Bob Stokes, able ballplayers from last year's second team, fulfilled Coach John Boitano's needs. Two new faces showed up on the Pup baseball diamond, Dan Montgomery, a transfer from Seattle Prep two years ago, added infield power to the Garfield team. Shortstop Girard Stone, from Los Alamos, New Mexico, used his speed and power at the plate to aid the Bulldog offensive punch.
