Committee signups are held early in the fall under the auspices of the Cabinet, each member of which is the chairman or co-chairman of one of the various Girls' Club committees. Their purpose is to include as many girls as possible in the club activities. The Advisory Board consists of ten girls, four of whom are elected and six appointed. Their main duties include the enforcement of school regulations and supervision of certain of the club committees. Miss Mildred Bell, advisor, offers valuable guidance and 'friendly advice to every girl. Five elected officers lead all activities by their inspiring leadership. The first one of the fall consisted of greeting new girls to the school with helpful directions and friendly smiles. An open house was held in the Girls' Club Office, or G.C.O. as it is commonly called, to acquaint everyone with Club work. At this time, the officers, A.B., and Cabinet members were introduced. Many proiects were carried on throughout the year. Among new activities sponsored was the use of a monthly calendar and the sale of purple-white bow ties. Carameled apples, pompoms, and football pencils were also sold. The first viceepresident took over chairmanship of the Cabinet meetings. All these activities are united under the Girls' Club creed and through them, the Club hopes to turn out many fine, worthy women. His mem- bership gives him an opportunity to take part in school activities. The club, led by Mr. Leslie Cribley, adviser, together with three elected officers, sponsors many events. Some of these include skating parties, a faculty Christmas party, and the sale of book covers. These functions are carried out through the Advisory Board, the Bulldog Club, and the various committees. The Advisory Board members see that school rules and regulations are carried out. They provide friendly counsel besides welcom- ing new students and helping boys who are having difficulty to adiust to school life. By setting the proper examples of personal con- duct, the Boys' A.B. hopes to maintain the fine standards of Garfield High. Tate displayed great skill in developing a team that placed second in the State as well as in the city. The fighting Bulldogs gave a brilliant demonstration of will-to-win and determination by coming from behind to beat Roosevelt 63-58. The game placed Garfield second in the City League as well as Seattle's second entry to the State Tournament. On the first day of tournament play, Garfield displayed real class in defeating Renton, the state champs of last year, 56-41. The following day, Garfield breezed by Auburn, 64-53. In the semi-finals, the Bulldogs edged Highline 49-48 in a thriller before a full house. Garfield was to meet Franklin in the first All-City final in tournament history. Franklin, being hot in the shooting in 2 QS department, was on the long end of a 46-42 score at the final gun. Garfield, led by Doug Smart, played brilliant ball in holding Bruno Boin, the Quaker's leading scorer, to four points. Garfield won 14 and lost 5. THE THRILL OF VICTORY ASKETB LL BASIC l'I'l'llAI.l. The Bulldogs had good material but lacked the pitching strength which the leading teams possessed. The records also showed Garfield's inability to keep up its tradition as a fine hitting team in league play. Garfield won two, losing ten, to finish in a tie for the cellar. How- ever, prospects look good for next year's competition with many po- tential ballplayers coming up from this year's varsity reserves and second team. They strive for a better understanding between parents and teachers. They work tirelessly and unselfishly for the benefit of every Garfield youth. The P.-T. A. provides chaperones for the ski busses and takes an active part in the school athletic program. This year, the organization sponsored a scholar- ship fund and aided in the Braunschweig Exchange. School problems are presented at each meeting by two student representatives. This plan brings about a closer relationship between the parents, teachers, and student body. TYPICAL LIONS CLUB MEETINGS LIONS CL T IS indeed fortunate when a school can have a group of enthusiastic businessmen as backers for its school activities. Garfield is privileged to be associated with the Capitol Hill Lions Club. Working together, these busy men and a committee of students representing the student body, have sponsored many events and proiects for the benefit of Garfield High. Each month, this organization selects a Boy and Girl of the Month, who visit the Club for luncheon and discussion. Through this plan it is hoped to encourage student interest and pride in their community and to prepare them for a place in future civic life. X: S WE, the Senior Class of 1954, prepare to leave Garfield High School, we pause to remember the late Mr. Charles Greer, head of the Industrial Arts Department. ln memory of his service to our school and community, we hereby dedicate this, the i954 Arrow. Leaving Garfield will be a sad experience for each of us. We have spent what might be called the most important four years of our lives within its portals. We have worked together as a unit disregarding color, creed, and religion. We have grown up. The days spent in high school are not always the most happy ones. However, we have learned to face the problems as they were presented. Each person has chosen his path, the field he wishes to enter, the road he is to follow. We realize that each road must fit its finder. Moreover, we believe that Garfield is a highway to life itself, for within its walls is enclosed a world in miniature. ln closing, we salute you, Garfield, and all for which you stand.
