Oh, let its light Shine through our country's story! Here lies her wealth, her strength, her might Here lies her future glory. -Anonymous GRADS9 NIGHT YOU STAND IN YOUR OWN LIGHT. -John Heywood The 'I949 Arrow Staff has chosen the preceeding quo- tation for the theme of this annual because it is so symbolic of the ever-changing panorama of life. Through light, man has gained knowledge-knowledge with which he, in turn, has captured the beams of this miraculous power. Niontents . . . E. E. HANSELMAN, our capable and very experienced principal, has served Garfield in this capacity for the past seven years. During this time it has always been his policy to cooper- ate to the fullest extent with the stu- dents' wishes. His policy of employing new devel- opments to maintain the high standard required to meet today's changing needs, has established Garfield as an efficient and well-organized high school. ln addition, his successful efforts and pleasing personality are sincerely respected and admired. PILIIT MR. E. E. HANSELMAN, Principal LESLIE CRIBLEY, Boys' Advisor EMILIE HENSEL, Girls' Advisor 12 The respective counselors of our Girls' and Boys' Clubs, Miss Hensel and Mr. Cribley, have, on every occasion, strived to instill in the minds of Garfield pupils, a spirit of friendliness, sincerity, and coopera- tion, three qualities they believe to be essential in developing and enriching one's personality. Their policy of merging individual, workable ideas with those of the student body is but one of the plans sponsored by these advisors. LIGHTS MR. HERLIN SLOCUMB, Vice-Principal The center of Garfield activity is the office. Mrs. Semmens, the chief clerk, and Miss Drapeau, her helper, ably fulfill their duties. ' Miss Hamaoka, the guidance clerk, successfully helps the counse- lor, while Miss Warren manages the attendance department. ln the library a pleasant atmos- phere exists owing to the combined efforts of Miss Cole and her capable assistant, Mrs. Almquist. S THE VICE-PRINCIPAL of this school, Mr. Herlin Slocumb has always been respected for fair, impartial iudgment. Although responsible for the issuing of demerits to delinquent pupils, he has endeared himself to the student body as a friendly, sympathetic confidant. He is never too busy to give the con- structive and kindly advice which has, in the past, helped many pupils over- come their various problems. The faculty also finds, in this man, an exceedingly cooperative and under- standing leader, a true inspiration to all who know him. MARGARET SEMMENS SACHIKO HAMAOKA MICHELE DRAPEAU JESSIE A. The four years that are now behind the Seniors have not been easy, they have had to overcome many obstacles and adiust themselves to various unfamiliar circumstances. The Starlights are well known about Garfield, for during their final year they have engaged in numerous activities through which they gained ex- perience in cooperation, in leadership, and in knowledge, that is essential to the success of their adult lives. Throughout the year the members of the staFi have spent many long hours outside of school as well as during the regular period provided, in their attempt to meet the high standards set by previous Arrow StaFfs. The tests are written by the Arrow advisor, Miss Marie C. Saeman, in col- laboration with the current staff. Students wishing to be on the art or photography staFfs must demonstrate their skill. Some of the qualifications considered are programs, creative ability, and char- acter traits. As to the latter, former teachers of the prospective staff members are consulted in order to obtain a lust evaluation of their merits. Six times our annual has received All American and five times First Class Honor Ratings. The system of iudging is very impartial yet thorough. Evaluations are made regarding the plan and technical qualities of the book as well as definite comments relating to each of the five sections. Considerable stress is placed upon the character of the pictures and the ade- quacy of the accompanying copy. An annual is not penalized for errors or faults, but credited for its accomplishments. Without the aid of this publication, numerous students would remain ignorantof various events carried on during the year. Due to the number of students who wish to serve on the Messenger, it is necessary to have two staffs a year on a semester basis. This plan enables a greater number of pupils to have 'an opportunity to work on the paper and obtain valuable experience in the field of iournalism. The members ofthe stafts have the respon- sibility of printing accurate accounts and of seeing that the Messenger is out on time. On Fridays the paper is distributed among its subscribers in sixth period classes, where it is eagerly awaited. FEATURE REPORTERS First Row: Naomi lnouye, Marilyn Hymen. For example, Olot Day, the Funfest, Purple and White Day, and class elections are prominent events which might fail if not given extensive publicity. The duties of the staffs are based on the cooperation of several editors and their assist- ants. The editor holds the most important posi- tion. His main responsibility is to write editorials that will be inspirations to the students. The managing editor supervises the general work of all staff members and edits the fourth page. After this subject has been completed, pupils who have sufficient high grades are qualified to begin their work. Publishing a paper entails hard work, but there are compensations for iournalists who have earned them. Perhaps the most satisfying experience is for a staff member to see an article he has written in print and to know that it is to be read and enioyed by many. The endeavors of students who study iour- nalism reach beyond high school. Many staff members may serve on city or country-wide papers in the future. Therefore, the Messenger strives to contribute practical experience as an aid to ,those who are planning careers in this field. xv COPY EDITORS Elaine Berger, Bill Lycette, Marilyn Newcomb Absentee: Deirdre Augustine. These cin- dermen turn out faithfully every night, striving to better their style and to lessen their running time. This year forty boys ran in the Cross-Country Meet, a three-and- one half mile course. First place was won by Al Fisher. Garfield met Lincoln in the second annual meet around Green Lake which was won by Lincoln. 'l'0UClI FO0TBALL Intramural touch football is an increasingly popular sport with the after-school athletes. These boys formed teams of six or more play- ers and these teams were divided into a heavyweight and a light- weight league. Jim Field's team displayed sound coordination and outstanding ability in defeating all oncomers in the Heavy League and winning the playoff game between the champions of the Heavy and Light Leagues. BASEBALL Baseball is not highly popular as an intramural sport at Garfield. However, quite a number of ath- letes participated in the diamond sport after school for the fun of playing baseball, or to make up gym hours. An Intramural Base- ball League was organized of six teams, but because of rained-out contests and lack of participation, this league failed to materialize and was discontinued by Coach Ffdler-'--- ssss BASKETBALL ASKETBALL has by far a larger number of participants than any of the other after-school sports. The boys who turn out are divided into a heavy and a light league. These leagues are divided into an A, B, and C division. The competition is' keen among these intramural teams. Great skill and smart ball-handling was displayed when the Collins Boys, who, after a hard struggle, won the league championship. VOLLEYBALL Volleyball was introduced as an intramural sport for the first time by Coach Fidler this year. Any roll room who could bolster five or more boys, was eligible for a position in the Volleyball Tour- nament. Sixteen roll rooms spon- sored teams in the elimination tournament. To qualify for the finals, Miss Buckley's and Mr. Comstock's roll each won three games, however, Miss Buckley's roll proved superior in the finals. TABLE TENNIS Table Tennis has enjoyed a tre- mendous boom this year in Gar- field. Under Frank Fidler's super- vision a ladder of about twenty- eight boys was outlined. These ping-pong enthusiasts spent much of their time during lunch and before school in the ping-pong room, participating in matches and strengthening their games. The result of the tournament proved Roosevelt Chinn first place winner and Fung Chinn, second. TUMBLING Tumbling seems more like a maior sport than an intramural sport at Garfield. Boys wishing to be on the tumbling team tryout for positions on the team. These tumblers can be seen in the gym before school every morning practicing their leaps and flips. Under the direction of Mr. More the tumbling team makes appear- ances at intermissions of football and basketball games and each year has an act in the Funfest. G IIFFICERS MISS JOHNSON Advisor JUN I E DYER President PEGGY LOU HERRON First Vice-President fl ALYCE ENG Second Vice-President TWI LA KRUSE Secretary-Treasurer timmy YONE KAN DA Historian me W HE OFFICERS ofthe G Club, chosen for sincerity as well as ability, have endeav- ored to fulfill the requirements of their positions during the year. These industrious girls have undertaken various proiects in their eFtorts to make the club a worthwhile and enioyable organization. Among them have been the planning of several parties, ways of raising money and the obtaining of a club pin. The members are to be commended for their fine choice of leadership. For all-around sportsmanship, leadership, and service a plaque is awarded the girl who is most deserving. This tradition began some eight years ago, when Miss Johnson presented the idea of honoring the senior girl who had given the most inspiration to the club as a whole. This idea was readily accepted, and thus each year the club has voted for the senior who has been the most inspiring to them. President Junie Dyer, because of her unselfish and untiring efforts, was chosen to receive this award. inspirational Winner ,,,,,1i....- 1 i JUN I E DYER lkeceivingi MISS JOHNSON fPresentingi CUMMITTEES AFTER SCll00L MANAGERS First Row: Dorothy lwasaki, Irene Yoshimura, Gloria Hyodo, Fannie Wong, Margaret Spaulding. HE GIRLS who manage the after-school sports' activities assume a huge responsi- bility. On their shoulders rest the duties of checking attendance, taking care of equipment, keeping scores, and arranging for various other details that might arise. These highly important services play a large part in assuring the success ofthe girls' sports program. ln compensation for the cooperative and capable way these man- agers serve, a minimum of a hundred points is awarded them toward their Big G, with the possibility of earning additional points for exceptional work. The G Club committees, composed of a group of unheralded girls, deserves recognition for the valuable service which they have rendered this past year. lt has been their chief duty to plan and prepare the social gatherings sponsored by the club. ln order to insure the success of these functions, the committee members devote many hours outside of school. Testing their abilities as saleswomen, a number of the members sold hot dogs between the halves of the home basketball games. Primarily an undertaking to raise money, this project proved to be enioyable as well as profitable. Since the idea was so well received by the student body, the club hopes again to sell them next season. One of the high points ofthe year was the annual Letter Breakfast, which was held at Cleveland High School. Due to the fact that this affair was limited to twelve girls, only seniors and those highly deserving the honor were chosen. AFTER SCll00L SWIMMING LTHOUGH Garfield is not equipped with swim- ming facilities the girls have, nevertheless, adopted this sport. Using the YWCA in which to turn out, the class was under the management of Maxine Softky. The beginners succeeded in swim- ming the length of the pool while the intermedi- ates perfected several strokes. The advance section concentrated on diving and generally improving their co-ordination. BADMINTUN That popular sport, badminton, made its debut early in the fall. Basically like tennis, this game is essentially one of strategy, catching one's opponent unaware. Owing to the interest shown for this activity, it was offered twice a week, and was supervised by Irene Yoshimura and Dorothy Iwa- saki. Taught the fundamentals of the game in the gym classes, the girls perfected their tech- niques after school. PING-PONG Due to .the large turnouts, ping-pong, managed by Johanetta Weber and Sonia Neslin, was offered twice a week. Despite the fact that this sport is thought to be an elementary one, certain techniques must be perfected before this game can be played with any skill. Two vital funda- mentals to be mastered are timing and the keep- ing of one's eyes on the ball. These two factors helped the girls improve their games. BASKETBALL The casaba season, which was ushered in after the Christmas vacation, was ably managed by Helen Tsutsumoto and Lois Wilkinson. Several weeks were spent in practicing techniques and getting the feel of the ball. The playing really be- gan when teams were chosen and a round-robin started. One of the high points in the tourney came when Coach Johnson took the floor and out- played everyone. ACTIVITIES VULLEYBALL OLLEYBALL had an enthusiastic following this past year. Despite the fact that this activity was held once a week, the participants gained skill and ease in handling the ball. Very ably managed by Tomiko Yoshioka, Fannie Wong, June Watanabe, and Gloria Osawa, these after school games were very heatedly contested. The regular physical education classes held a tourney also, which added more color to the season. BASEBALL One of the last major sports offered was our national game, baseball. This activity, supervised by managers Lee Dixon and Rosemary Tatum, was played by the lower as well as the upper class girls. Taking several weeks to limber up, the par- ticipants were soon able to play like veterans. Exceptional interest and good sportsmanship were instrumental in making the season a success. ETENNIS Tennis is an activity which is fast becoming a leading minor sport. Due to weather conditions it was limited to spring play. Under the student leader, Alyce Eng, a tourney was arranged at the beginning of the season. The contestants chal- lenged each other on a ladder-scale so that the defeated players were eliminated. The girls who participated in this sport improved their games and gained valuable experience. MODEBN DANCE Modern dance is a form of movement, created during the last twenty-five years. lt emphasizes freer, more natural movements, rather than the established forms such as tap and ballet. Like con- temporary art, modern dance is characterized by satire and distortion. A class of this type is signifi- cant because the students become acquainted with forms other than those with which they are already familiar. 7 if , f if Z X 2 , ff Z? if .1 X as 55 N -9, , .J X ig V4 K f ,f 1 Z , f W ' X I x 5 .94 . -:fi , af v-W ' ff W, f aff f H 1 ,X f ff 7 - f W , , . ff V M 97 ,, ,, .W W , 'S Mi SQL 5 Ly X ff yy, ,, 5. , wen- X ,IWX L f ,, MMZ 1 W . T IL LIGHT S LIGHT travels through millions of miles of space to reach its destination, our earth, so too, the yearbook experiences many changes and processes before it is put into the hands of you, the faculty and students of Garfield High School. During the trials and tribulations which were involved in publishing the Arrow, Miss Saeman, our advisor, assisted in making many vital and difficult decisions. We wish to thank her for the willing and constructive service which she so patiently rendered. Each member of this 1949 staff has spent many hours striving to produce an annual which accurately and colorfully reflects the outstanding and memorable events of the past scholastic year. It is the hope of them all, that our theme, Light, is as significant to you as it is to us, that it will guide you in your present endeavors as it has previously guided your predecessors, and that it will beckon you on to greater achievements in the future. -THE EDITORS. ll X.
