Although the general teaching of scientific facts, and the im- parting of a basic knowledge of science to its students, are the aims of the science department. their main concern is teaching students to think clearly, ac- curately. and completely. The music department gives instruction in performance and study of music composition. In addition to a musical comedy which is presented annually, in- strumental and vocal ensembles are frequently heard on school programs and furnish entertain- ment for downetown organizaf tions. Through foreign language courses the student has the op- portunity of learning to speak and read and write in several different languages. Knowledge of modern languages increases interest in present-day World affairs. CQ-ZLZAJZOOMJ Cfrealing queer themzcul L'OI'l7fJULlV7Ll'-S. The ronmnte ol plums. I-'renrh puppetevrx in u u'1'r1mu.

For the express purpose of making fit the youth of Garfield for the serious business of earn- ing a living, the industrial arts department was created. Now it plays a leading role in teaching students to use their hands pro- ductively. The fundamentals of home- making are included in the home economics courses.
