Mr. O. H. Schaaf Mr. Michael .Iaffrln Nlr. .lack Wilson Superintendent of Schools President Clerk-Treasurer Mr. Donald Mantel Nlr. Earl Bahm Vice President Board Member The laws of our state provide that there shall be free public schools throughout Ohio. ln order to establish and operate these schools on the most efficient basis, and in order to permit local residents to share in determining the type, quality, and extent of the educational opportunities to be provided within each community, our state govern- ment has subdivided the state into many school dis- tricts. It has delegated to the people of each district many of its responsibilities, much of its authority, and the right to finance better educational oppor- tunities than the meager ones which are guaranteed by the state. The agency through which the state conducts its educational program, in each respective school district, is the local board of education. The privilege of selecting the board members has been delegated to local citizens, who know the candidates and who, therefore, should be able to select the most capable members. The board of education ballot is non-partisan, which means that candidates run for election, not as representatives of a political party, but rather as representatives of all the people ot the community. Mr. Frank Kniola Mr. Henry Trubiano Board Member Board Member Board members must serve without pay, and they are not reimbursed for expenses incurred in the discharge of their duties, except for S36 a year which the state law specifies for transportation to and from meetings. The law requires one meeting each month, but'in these days when bond issues, levies, teacher short- ages, classroom shortages, and maintenance prob- lem abound, the average is likely to be two or three meetings a month. The amount of time consumed by one meeting is three or four hours. A board member has no authority except when in attendance at a board meeting, or when per- forming a duty assigned to him by the board as a whole. Therefore, citizens of the community should present their problems to the board, during its regular meetings and not to individual board mem- bers, at other times. ' ln view of the heavy responsibilities which board members must assume, for the good of all of us, and without remuneration, each of us should re- member to express our thanks to them for the good work which they do. Q--if PRINCIPAL W ,T tv... vs' gs. -V We willingly do a great deal to get an education. What, then, can we reasonably expect education to do for us? It should make us happier, and it should enable us to make others happier. lt should equip us to employ our talents and our time-give us a firmer foundation for the future. Education should help us make a better living, but it should do more than that. lt should help us to live more abundantly. Important marks of true education are sympathy and understanding. Let us remember that education neither begins nor ends in the classroom. We say that individuals are completing their education, but in a literal sense no one ever completes an education. All life is, or should be, a process of education. lt is the sincere hope of the Principal that all of the graduates of 1955 will have secured through the excellent school opportunities provided by Garfield Heights citi- zens, the necessary skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to carry each and every one forward in a very successful iourney through life. The line this year con- sisted of: Virginia Bonnell, Beve Bradler, Lois DelPizzo, Nancy Nowak-head maior- ette, Barb Sadowsky, Carol Scherler, and Mari Strizzi. Throughout the year they participated in the Band Concert and marched at all the parades. Varsity Cheerleaders The varsity squad of cheerleaders consisted of four members, all who graduated in June. They were as follows: Joan Franz, 2 years, Mary Ann Schieberl, i year, Mary Ann Civetta, i year, and Patti Marrek, captain, 2 years. The cheerleaders were spon- sored by Miss Eleanor Jaskulski and Mrs. Jean Donovan. They were a very important factor in Garfield's victories. They always displayed plenty of enthusiasm at the games- and rallies. They created good sportsmanship and spirit throughout the student body. This year they held a successful dance, the Moonlight Serenade , which everyone enioyed. This year's varsity basketball team, coached by Mr. Carl McColloch, managed to win only 3 games out of 20. Garfield defeated Bedford for their only conference win and beat Brush and Shaker Heights in independent tilts. This year's team was hampered with inexperience as Coach McColloch was beginning to build for a good team for the future. Casey Monczewski was the high scorer with 221 points in IO conference games. Junior, Ed Nemetz and Sophomore, Ray Maria were next highest with l60 points each. lt wasn't until after 5 games that Coach McColloch decided that he would try to go the rest of the season with three sophomore boys instead of the four seniors that were dropped from the squad. Next year, with 5 returning lettermen, the Bulldogs should once again become a winning team and make the other teams in the district stand up and take notice. There were iust three seniors left on the squad at the end of the season. Kathryn Lesmer has served three years on the staff, Norb Owens and Jane Davis two years and the other members of the staff one year each. Bankers Mr. Allen Scholl's 8th grade homeroom made-up this year's Bankers. The purpose of this organization was to promote banking throughout G.H.H.S. and was done on Tuesday's in the morning during the homeroom period. The Bankers did a fine iob of conducting regular banking procedures. They were responsible for collecting money and selling tickets for Showboat, Yearbooks, P.T.A. memberships and other school activities. Ushers Club The Ushers Club, under the direction of Mr. Frank Trella, was made up of eighteen active members. This club participated in important events along with many school activities and com- munity social events. The officers were: President, Pat Gallogly, Vice-President, Roger Roman, Secretary, Dorothy Marshall, Treasurer, Lee Blazey. The members were: Pat Laurenti, Geraldine MacGeorge, Daniel Marsh, Nancy Marsh, Delores Ma- iewski, Donald Nimberger, Janet Nimberger, Dennis Reid, Ronald Shimek, Harry Stoff, Don Mielke, Barbara Gardner, Paul Lubera, and Prudy Passalacqua. G. A. A. Cabinet The G.A.A. was sponsored by Miss Jean Siedel and Mrs. Jean Donovan. It consisted of about 200 members and was opened to girls in grades nine through twelve. The new members this year were given big sisters to help them. The officers were as fol- lows: Marge Bissi, President, Elaine Depenbrok, Vice President, Pat Marrek, Secretary, and Janet Feucht, Treasurer. They held their meetings once a month and often had buzz sessions in which they elected new teams and officers. Some of the activities for this year were the Annual Soccer Supper, Parent's Night, the Annual Re- union, and Playday. At playday, girls from other Cleveland schools 'come and have a meeting together which brings about many new friendships. These girls also spon- sored the girls' intramural pro- gram. At the end of each intra- mural program they put out a paper called, the G.A.A. Gazette. Librarians The librarians were made-up of eighth grade students under the supervision of Miss Victoria Mans- field. They met after school to per- form the miscellaneous duties throughout the library. They were responsible for keeping the date cards, and the books orderly. The officers were: Diane Navis, Presi- dent, Sandra Kadowski, Secretary, and Pat Gettier, Treasurer. Nlovie llperators For the past three years Mr. Ralph Witter has done an ex- cellent iob of supervising the movie operators, consisting of l5 members. The club ran noon day movies and also classroom study movies. One of the more obscure clubs of the school, the movie operators was one of the important clubs. The officers were as follows: President, Richard Marble, Vice-President, Harry Parrott, Treasurer, Donald Hudak. Other members were: How- ard Welker, Ronald Dunn, Tom Cerveny, John Kotol, Dennis Foder, David Bendick, Jack Kitson, Charles Tonkin, George Hrizo, Don Stupak, Domenic Federico, Jon Durdon. llfficc Assistants Every year a group of girls are given a chance for office experience by giving up a study hall and working in one ' of four offices. They re- ceived experience in busi- ness training such as filing, typing, using the rexograph, and mimeographing. This was recorded on the girls' office records and filed. The fact that they have had expe- rience in these offices has helped the girls when they were applying for iobs. Stage G uilcl The Stage Guild under the care- ful supervision of Mr. Raymond Stiefel was in charge of all on stage productions at GHHS. Elect- ed officers were Pres., Lorne Bevis, Vice-pres., Ken Nowacki, Treas., Art Vidmar, Sec., Jim Humpal, other officers were Sergeant at Arms, Robert Zawackig and Second Vice-pres., Robert Kirby. The club consisted of approximately 13 members, including the probation- ists. The big nights for the boys were those of Showboat, although they participated in other GHHS activities. Yearbook Staff Although everyone knows who was on the Yearbook Staff, very few people know the work that was involved in producing a yearbook such as the one we have here. First and foremost the yearbook must be sold. This means not only seniors but underclassmen and teachers. ln addition to sales of the yearbook you must sell patrons and advertisements. This is no easy job. To induce people to part with money six to eight months even before they see the ad required hard work and salesmanship. Second the yearbook must be produced, this means pictures and writeups. This involves professional and student staff photography. The pictures and writeups are ,sent to the printer separately. When they are returned and proofed the pictures and writeups are then pasted together in a single page copy. This too is proofed and approved. The book is then printed, collections are then made from students and advertisers and the book is distributed. Does this sound easy? lt isn't, but the staff and advisors do enjoy the finished product and know the yearbook will be a treasured memory album for all the years to come.
