DONALD MANTEL Vice President Board Member Board Member Board Member ADMINISTBATIUN This group consists of our five member board of education, superintendent of schools, and clerk- treasurer. Each board member has been elected, by the citizens of our community, for a term of four years. Three of these members were elected in November, 1949. The other two in 1951. They took office during the first week of the following January. Pictured on this page are: Mr. Earl F. Bahm, president of the board of education Mrs. Anna H. Peters, vice president Mr. Frank Kniola, board member Mrs. Sara Jane Jablonski, board member Mr. Donald E. Mantel, board member Mr. O. H. Schaaf, superintendent of schools , Mr. Jack F. Wilson, clerk-treasurer The quality of our teachers, the condition of our buildings, grounds, textbooks, and educational equipment attest the sincerity, foresight, and efficiency of these men and women. So long as Garfield Heights citizens elect board members because of their capabilities and their genuine interest in good schools, our youth will be assured of excellent educational advantages. 2 rincipal This issue of the Pioneer Yearbook will have special significance because it is published in the year of the Ohio Sesquicentennial observation when all Ohio is celebrating the achievements of the first one hundred fifty years of existence as a State. The love of state and a knowledge of its history and traditions are a most important part of education in our democracy. Faith, in- spiration, and a sense of security come from an appreciation of our pioneering past. The Garfield Pioneer is very aptly named. Its pages will furnish the history and traditions of a segment of Ohio which are very important in the lives of all who have been privileged to grad- uate from Garfield Heights High School. Reading these pages now and in years to come will in- spire love of state, love of community, a sense of security, and an appreciation of the educational advantages provided by the good citizens of Garfield Heights. A. A., Booster. 1 The Night Before Graduation Twas the night before Graduation, and all through the school, Not a student was stirring, for that was the rule. The diplomas were laid in the office with care, In hopes that each Senior soon would receive theirs. The scholars were sleeping at home in their beds, While visions of future plans whirled in their heads. I put on my nightgown, I pinned up my hair, And soon fell asleep, with nary a care, When soon in my dream there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter. Away to the high school l flew like a lark, Straight to the auditorium, which was totally dark. Suddenly the spotlight cast a faint rosy glow, On the big dark stage and what it had to show. Then what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a rosy picture of four wonderful years. Now Senior, now Junior, now Sophomore, now Freshman, ll could tell I was in for an all night long session.J Our laughter, our heartaches, our good times, our tears, All played a part in those fabulous years. Our dances, our sports, our pictures, our class rings, Our teachers, our studies, our grade cards, so many things! Our iobs, vacations, the Prom, class pictures, The yearbook, the Showboat, assemblies-what a mixture! And then in a twinkling I heard from the side, A sound of low voices, and I could have cried For I knew that the end of my dream was near, I wished that all Seniors could have been there. Then our principal stepped into view, He had one desire, to give us our due. He gave a short talk on the world's sorry plight, lt was our iob, he said, to turn wrong into right. I clutched my diploma and thought of the past, Our days spent at Garfield had gone by too fast. I felt a strange sensation from my head to my toes, The spotlights dimmed to a faint hazy rose, And I heard him exclaim before fading from sight, God bless all you Seniors, good luck and good night. With batting championship, slugging championship, and leader in R. B. I.'s tucked under his belt, Fran Snyder, easily won The Most Valuable Baseball Trophy. Although missing him as they will the Macmen expect to go far with their seven returning lettermen. BOWLING 1952-53 The bowling team this year under the direction of Coach Walter Williams, and Captain John Lentz, placed seventh in fourteen in the league at the time of printing, won, so far, 33 and lost 30. The members were as follows: Captain John Lentz, Jim Dobric, Jerry Plonski, Mike Pasek, Chuck Rhodes, and Bob Patocsnik. 41 TRACK - 1952 Although unable to win a meet, the Track Team under their new coach, Cliff Foust, showed that they will be right up there again this year with their same fine spirit. Outstand- ing performances were turned in by Don and Walt Anthony win- ners of Conference Champion- ships in broad-jump and high- jump respectively. Don, with a third place in the District Meet, was the team's only qualifier for the State Meet in Columbus. Third row: Coach Rogalski, Meemans, Long, McCune, Pinos, Zrimsek, Mundy, R. Williams, Vasanda, Manager Davis, Head Coach Foust, Coach Knazek. Playing better than expected the bulldogs won two impressive victories over Parma and University and continued this fine play and spirit although overpowered and out-scored by Bellaire. The heart-breaker of the year came when Maple Heights scored on o last minute drive to sneak through a see-saw battle 32-27. Spirit sank low when the bulldogs fell to Willoughby, but like true champions the bulldogs, in their annual Homecoming Game over- powered the highly favored Brush High Archs 7-6 for the highlight of the season. Walking over Bedford and nosing out Berea proved the last taste of victory for the bulldogs for they found themselves on the short end in their final contest in Painesville. The team and their new coach, Cliff Foust, deserve much credit for their fine record which enabled them to finish 3rd behind co-champions Willoughby and Maple Heights. Garfield was well represented on the All-Conference team placing Rich Rosa, halfback, on the first team and Wayne Trubiano, halfback, and Frank Fiore, linebacker, on the second team. The third team choice was Ralph Palmer, end. Receiving Honorable Mention were Jack Watters, center, Allan Tepley, tackle, Don Fracasso, tackleg and Roger Sobieski, guard. 1952 RECORD Garfield Opponents Garfield Opponents 13 Parma O 7 Brush 6 31 University 13 51 Bedford 0 12 Bellaire 41 25 Berea 20 27 Maple 32 12 Painesville 32 6 Willoughby 28 42 di 5 5 Im? Most of the season, the 1952-1953 edition of the Garfield Bulldogs was hounded by hard luck. Although they scored more points per game than any of the four preceding teams, the Bulldogs could not win consistently. As a result their record was an unimpressive 6-11. The games were exceedingly close, however, and provided a good measure of thrills. Coach Carl McCulloch introduced a new twist this year. To slow down a game and break open an opponent's zone defense, he had the boys hold the ball at mid court until the anxious opponent came out of the zone. ln the second Willoughby game, for example, Garfield held the ball for five straight minutes without scoring a point. The Bulldogs finished fourth in the Greater Cleveland Conference despite the fact that Walt Antftony and Wayne Trubiano each scored over 200 points for the season. 1952-1953 RECORD Garfield Opponents Garfield Opponents 44 John Adams Bedford 70 South Berea 55 Berea Parma 54 Maple Heights Maple Heights 64 Lincoln Painesville 59 Lutheran Willoughby 53 Willoughby Bedford 71 University Brush 38 Brush WVIKESTLING - 1952-1953 Wrestling 1952-53, kneeling, left to right: Manager Schneider, Duda, Haverlack, Piontkowski, Captain Gredesky, Asmondy, Stadden, Knittle, Long, manager Mack. Al- though only a 3-6 record, our team won many individual matches by decisions but when they lost it was often by a fall, thus giving their opponents more points than were won by a decision. Coach Morris has a nucleus of a good squad returning for the 1953-54 school year and hopes to better this year's record.
