Board Member ADVE TUBE 1 LI 1 G In the final analysis, all education is very largely a matter of experience and educational experiences are by no means limited to a school building. A school, at its best, is but one agency of society for organizing certain types of experiences in ways which are apt to prove most useful and beneficial to its students in later life. This point of view suggests that children are likely to best learn the importance of their individual responsibilities as citizens in a democ- racy through the actual assumption of responsibilities in planning, organizing and participating in school affairs. One cannot learn to play the piano by Watching someone else play the instrument. The learner must himself get the feel of the keys. SCHOOLING and LIVING have thus gradually become synonomous terms-identical in their implications. It may be said, therefore, that the good school is the one that relates its program and activities to those of the community and the society which it serves. Never before in the history of the World has there been a more urgent need for the education of all the people. World peace in the Atomic Age is a matter of survival. It is also a matter of education for World citizenship involving the assumption of new responsibilities. Man's power for self-destruction is now complete. We must either educate ourselves or perish in the attempt. It is later--much later-than most people surmise or care to admit. -FRANK I. KNIOLA, President, Garfield Heights City Board of Education.
