Kerr The publication of this year's Pioneer Yearbook is in salute of the sixteen year principalship services given to the school by our Principal, Miss Mary H. Kerr. Formerly head of the Mathematics Department Miss Kerr served as Assistant Principal of Garfield Heights High School from 1928 to 1931, and Principal since September, 1931. She was founder and first advisor of the Girls' Friendship Club. During the war years, Miss Kerr kept in constant touch with the Service representatives' of our school. She has recently served as secretary of the Northeast Ohio Vocational Guidance Association, and is active in the affairs of the Ohio High School Principals' Association. Appointed Director of Guidance and Special Services in Garfield Heights City Schools in October, 1946, Miss Kerr expects to take up her new duties when a successor to the principalship is appointed. Miss Kerr, always interested in student counseling as well as in home and community contacts, looks forward to her new position because of the greater opportunities in these fields. of 1947 In Recognltlon of 0ur N Principal ADMI I TRATIO Left to Bight: . Board Member ADVE TUBE 1 LI 1 G In the final analysis, all education is very largely a matter of experience and educational experiences are by no means limited to a school building. A school, at its best, is but one agency of society for organizing certain types of experiences in ways which are apt to prove most useful and beneficial to its students in later life. This point of view suggests that children are likely to best learn the importance of their individual responsibilities as citizens in a democ- racy through the actual assumption of responsibilities in planning, organizing and participating in school affairs. One cannot learn to play the piano by Watching someone else play the instrument. The learner must himself get the feel of the keys. SCHOOLING and LIVING have thus gradually become synonomous terms-identical in their implications. It may be said, therefore, that the good school is the one that relates its program and activities to those of the community and the society which it serves. Never before in the history of the World has there been a more urgent need for the education of all the people. World peace in the Atomic Age is a matter of survival. It is also a matter of education for World citizenship involving the assumption of new responsibilities. Man's power for self-destruction is now complete. We must either educate ourselves or perish in the attempt. It is later--much later-than most people surmise or care to admit. -FRANK I. KNIOLA, President, Garfield Heights City Board of Education. I9 Friendship Club, Show- Class Prophet: , Januar , 194 I had the strangest dream last night. In it I thought I'd take a little ride in my heliocop- ter so I went back to the garage and got ready to take-off. Soon I was in the beautiful wide blue sky along with 20 or 30 other heliocopters. I was in an exploring mood so I took a route I had never traveled before. After riding a while I entered something which seemed to be a cloud. Everything was quite dark except for the two flashlights I had tied on the nose of my plane when suddenly I saw before me a deep, shadowy, yet bea- utifully picturesque area which looked like something from Alice in Wonderland . I thought that while I was there I might as well investigate my surroundings. I landed and as I entered what appeared to be a cavern, I noticed a man with a long beard, dressed in flowing robes. I persuaded myself to keep calm and asked him where I was. 'You are in the land of prophecy, said he. I was just going to see how the lanuary, 1947 class of Garfield Heights High School is coming along. Would you like to look into the crys- tal ball with me? Indeed I would, said I, and fastened my bi-focals on the globular object. The first thing I saw was Ed Mayeros, the multi-millionaire of Garfield Heights arriving at the Wrestle-Nestle, a famous night-club owned by Eneo Cifani who runs a garage on the side. At another table was Ray Pilar- owski, special F. B. I. agent, checking-up on playboys Richard Glasko and Ed Hurley. As the old man tumed the crystal ball, I saw Congressman Ralph Gibbons dictating to his secretary Kathleen Ditzler a letter to lim Waters, telling him not to give up hope and he would graduate from college some- day. On the other side Isaw Ralph Obert, the college Romeo ordering flowers from Bob Renkel's Florist Shop, and there down the street was the mailman, Chuck Andrle, de- livering bills to Ken West while he tried to decide what he wanted to do to eam a living. Next door was a beauty shop owned and operated by Elaine Weber, and who should be in the shop but Marilynn McKenzie, a happily married woman giving her daughter a permanent. Then I saw Don Davies who was. a foundry supply salesman trying to become a forest ranger visiting lack Hiebsch who had devoted his life to drafting. tNot the Military kind.l The old man then told me to look deeper into the crystal ball and I obeyed his commands. .There-now I see. Why it's lim Swinehart, B.S.p MS., PhPg L.S.p M.F.T., receiving his third Nobel prize for his work on the secret chlorophyll while head of the Chemistry Department of U. C. L. A. Watch- ing the ceremonies were Richard Schlegel, a research chemist and Lucille Mion, who vowed she'd be a mathematical engineer if she blew up in the attempt. Walking down the street was Eugene White, chief butcher at Swift Co. on his way to have a tooth extracted fpoor kidl by I. D. Prusinski, Ir., dentist extra-ordinary. At this time I glanced up and noticed the old man looking intensely into the globe. As my gaze returned to the crystal ball I noticed a super Pan-American Clipper with Wallace Iacobs at the controls, assisted by Almira Arnold. On board were Elsie Welsh, traveling agent for W. W. W. S. and Harry Burnell, famous Y. W. C. A. fthe M. is not upside downl social worker all over the nation. Gradually the crystal ball is darkened but there was some- thing else I wished to see. I asked the old man to allow me a glimpse of G. H. I-I. S. I-le thrust the object into my hand and I saw the old Alma Mater. Yes-Mr. Woods was still there and I noticed Rose Bannaian had become a member of the faculty. The old man then took the crystal obiect from my hands and told me I must leave for it was nearly davsm, but before I left I thanked him for the opportunity of allowing me to see what was ahead for the Ianuary class of 1947. Class Prophec For June Class of 194 Last night, I sat comfortably in a seat on the streetcar, it was rather late and I was very sleepy. As we slowly rode down Broadway, I found myself dozing off to sleep. A hazy mist slowly appeared before me. It seemed as though I had entered a new world, and the year was 1965. A figure slowly emerged out of the mist. Imagine, it was one of my old schoolmates, George Bauer, who was walking his beat. He was waming Donald Turk to inform his street cleaners to improve their work, or he would take the matter up with His Honor, the mayor, Bernard Ponchock. I felt rather thirsty so I stopped off in one of Norman Kubinski's delicatessen chain stores for something to drink. As I walked out, there were two W. P. A. men working on the road. I recognized them as being Walter Wawrowski and Nick Milkovich. The for- man, Mike Romanik, was standing over the two men. to make sure they worked. It being a very warm and pleasing after- noon, I decided to walk through town to see what was new. The first thing that caught my eye was a huge sign on a newly designed building. It read, Ioan Baker, Commercial Artist As I started to cross the street a large cross-country truck passed me. I noticed that the driver was Donald Mackay. In front of me there was a large, clean-looking, gas station and garage combined. I glanced a second time at the building and discovered a sign above the doorway which read, Pro- prietor, lim Marsh . While visiting a new apartment building I noticed several pro- fessions were listed on the directory. Bill Schmidt, dentist, Rose Marie Hovorka, piano teacher, and Ruth Wurgler, dancing teacher. Doctor Ioseph Teramano, a famous surgeon, is also located in this building. I found Doc- tor's Raymond Nagel and Byron Svetlik's names listed on the directory too. lust as I was leaving the apartment building, I found Don Peter's Florist Shop. Across the street I was surprised to see a few store opening up. A sign on the door read, If you are now a blonde and would like to remain one, try our new solution, I then knew that it was owned by Wanda Latek. Ray Grazak, Chuck Keirnan, and Ernest Mickey are embarking an ambitious program?- of hiking to Alaska to find gold, marry rich girls, and become millionaires. As I walked around the corner I met Glenn Cook, natural- ly I asked him how he was and he replied, lust happy. Ho, Ho. On the same street I met Iulia Repke who said she was making the most of things. As I kept walking I noticed a very fat man coming towards me. I could not recognize him as he seemed to be in some kind of a fog. When he came closer, I noticed it was Bill Lewandowski. When I asked him how he had gained so much weight, he said he is now eating spaghetti and meat balls for breakfast, dinner, and supper Continuing down the next street, I passed a fish hatchery, and found the proprietor to be Gilbert Zaworski. I soon heard some strang- ers remarking that Wilbur Wesley Iones is one of the most successful business men in town. I now noticed an interesting sign out- side of an auto repair shop, which read, Antiques-Specializing in '34 Chevrolet's, Arlene Horak, Owner. I seemed to be out of the business section and was now in the residential district. I not- iced a sign, Lawyer on the house of my old class president, Dave Laurenzi. I saw August Brown walking out of his house, where he remarked that he and Wayne King are bach- elors and intend to remain the same. He also said Mary Caputo was happily married to Sniffer. June Prophec , continued A beautiful auto passed me by. Who should I see inside of it but Erma Wolfe, who is now happily married and advises other couples how to be happy in her daily, love lorn column, featured in the Cleveland Press. I now met Martha Moore, happily married to a gangster, who is now taking a twenty year enforced vacation. She informed me that Lois Wem is married and has a fam- ily and that Audrey Namoski is the mother of four beautiful children. Miriam Iohnson is still the answer to some man's prayer. I later discovered the football players ana cheerleaders of my good old Alma Mater are Pat Iaro's sons and daughters! To my amaze- ment I found the basketball team are the sons of Carol Schmiel! Pat Mosinski, Ruth Tuni- son, and Barbara Sullivan are also happily married. It is not necessary for housewife, Grace King and her husband to get a deck of cards, for they have their own twelve little Kings and Queens running around the house. This exclusive residential district would not be complete without having Gun Moll, Bar- bara Perry being chased by Policewoman Gerry Iones. I am now entering the suburbs where I find Angeline Ochocki and Bill Wat- son in the diaper business and doing fine. They remarked that Rose Marie Dougher is raising a family on a farm. After visiting with the diaper business, I stopped to have a talk with Eleanor Zahn, who is a stenographer at Garfield Auto Parts. It is rather late and I am getting hungry so I have decided to visit Bill Beaumont's famous night club. Ralph Podwojski, with his big time band, played my favorite song An Atom Bomb and You . I leamed that play- boy, Ray Lawrence, is present at each per- formance. After the band's appearance, Seigfreid Strickhausen came out as a chorus boy. Richard Kucera, a famous photograph- er, is also present taking pictures for the Press. Walking out I bought a Scripps-Howard, Cleveland Press from a newsboy on the corner, to read Ted Serio's resume of the latest home town news. Bob Bode, who is on furlough, from a successful Army life, also bought a paper. The headlines of the paper informed me that Milton Steward is our first Communist president, with Don Lendzian still running against him. Other election returns are: Daniel Schiely, Captain of the Yo-Yo team: Bob Van Cura, president of the A. A. A. tAuto Antique Associationj Glancing over the paper I found that Wilma Kist was cited, by the President, for the first parachute iurnp made by a woman from a plane. In this plane was Ioe Plichta, a gunner. Don Bohning is still employed as a steepleiack on the Bond Clothing Store which is not completed yet, while Henry Port- man is a big business executive. Iim Porub- sky is making himself a worth while citizen, being president of Porubsky and Sons, Inc., employing the following private secretaries: Ann Kondas, Olga Kurkanovich, Gerry Sovol, Doris Svoboda, Betty Nemeth, Marge Mer- icka, Dolores Samerdyke, Edith Gabriel, and Iean Kerr. Norma Cannon is a comptometer operator, with Shirley Perzeski as switch- board operator. June Prophet: , concluded Len Walski owns the title of being the only man in the world still collecting unemploy- ment checks. Reading one of the vaudeville shows I find that Eleanor Eaton and Loretta Mills are Big-time vaudeville dancers. El- eanor George is leading a successful career as a gag writer, for the great comedian and television star, Vernon Klopp who pays her 335,000 weekly. Libby Fields is also leading a successful artist's life while radio celebrity Orville Melcher, is the leading announcer. Latest society news reports that Edward Weiland, Evelyn Smotek, Paul Hurst, and Frances Holligan have made their first mil- lion and are classified as millionaires. lean Santin and Anna Marie Pirrone recently mar- ried millionaires, while Madeline Green is a rich widow. Leona Kaminski has inherited an estate, a yacht, and' other luxuries and is quite thrilled over her good fortune. Glancing through the women's page I read where Don Osowski, a Man About Town , became a lawyer for the Women's Friendship Club. Latest college reports say Dolores Faehnrich is doing her best in the stenograph- ic field. Norma Bohning is qualified as a Physical Education teacher. Lenore Boukalik is now a registered nurse. Louise Kizyma has finally completed her four years of college, through the twenty year plan. lean Wander- sleben is also successful as an office nurse. Emest Matuszewski, Americo Forestieri and Robert Minchak are doing fine in the chemical and engineering organization. Hal- ina Krawczyk, certified public accountant, is one of the highest paid workers in the court house, with Alice Nolan, head filing clerk, rating next. Dorothy Czerny is now at Wash- ington, D. C., in the White House balancing the national budget. Alice Novak is a student at Thiel College and working hard at her studies. Thomas Laurenzi is a Mechanical Engineer at Case. Zetta Brock, Rose Marie Cunningham, and Lucille Zulewski are models while Dorothy Kachinko is a Powers model. Magdalen Pikus is posing for the Du Barry's success course. Carol Kavan has reached her goal and is now a concert pianist, while Dolores Kren is a 'professional roller skater. Rita Vice is successful in opening up her own dress shop. Gene Cianciola's fingers are still working on the keyboard, and he is now a famous band leader. Ed Slowik, retiring at an early age, is leading a peaceful and contented life. Ed Bowles, although not retired, is holding one of the easiest jobs in town. Alice Chan- son is healthy, wealthy, and wise. She em- ployed Mary Pigat as her beautician, Rita Hengenius as her private nurse, and Marg- aret Kroger as her secretary. Margaret Plesh has just arrived back in this country after visiting South America. Norine Moore, as a private secretary, is re- turning from a vacation in Europe where she met Phyllis Reed. Loria Neri is still on her tour around the world with her private secretary, Grace Pas- tula. On the Trans-Atlantic plane they met Iulius Pignatello, the pilot of the plane, and Sally Clines the Air Stewardess. Mary Nemastil is living on one of the bea- utiful, tropical islands of Hawaii, where she has all kinds of recreational facilities. She recently saw Ken Bellis, who is a traveling bum. Bill Flynn, a famous wealthy explorer, recently arrived back in this country from a wild, adventurous trip through Utopia, where he met Dolores Tesmer who is Queen of Utopia. For some news in the field of science -Michael Matonis is nearing the completion of an atom-machine, which will either destroy the universe, or Michael. Suddenly, I heard terrific noises and began falling through space. I suddenly awoke to find myself on the floor of the Streetcar, with the familiar and ever smiling face of Nancy Knowles standing over me and helping me to my feet. What fun it had been to see a preview of the future lives of my classmates. A-2 1 ll A- li u-1 24 1' 'C I-I I-I 'P lil Fd I-I ll A-6 11A-5 10 A-2 A-1 Q n-I .WAN r w '? ? 'I It 2 2 - E . The chief assignment of the orchestra each semester is to play at Commencement exercises. The musicians this year encouraged future instrumentalists by demonstrating their instruments and performing at Garfield and Maple Leaf Elementary Schools. The orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Vincent Patti, spends most of its time sight 'reading anything and everything. It is a source of enjoyment for the members who relax in playing and listening to music. The violin section consists of Rose Bannaian, Americo Forestieri, and Rhea Fields. The orchestra, for a while, also had the assistance of Margaret Rose Holdeman on the cello. The flutes are played by Nancy Knowles and Mary Smith while Patricia Miller and Donald Nemec perform in the clarinet section. Our trumpeteers are Edward Pientowski, Richard Schneider, and Henry Schlaeppi. Ed Slowik and Ray Basta contribute the mellow tones of their saxophones, while Bob Minchak blows the horn. Erma Wolfe and Rose Marte Dougher provide the bass beside Ioe Svoboda, the drummer. Bruce Walton plays the tuba. All are blended together by Carol Kavan at the piano.
