We started out as little first graders with Mrs. Alta Wille as our teacher. Everyone was supposed to draw a picture of what they wanted to be when they grew up. Mark and Bruce wanted to be firemen, so they drew a red fire truck and used three red color crayons coloring it. Sam and Larry wanted to be ranchers, Jean wanted to be a librarian, and Sheila wanted to be a housewife. In first grade, the girls always played with barbie dolls. Everyone was supposed to try to sleep at nap hour but as you know any first graders, it was hard to fall asleep. One of our favorite places to play at recess time was the steps over by the back door of the old grade school. The girls used to chase the guys by the steps and it was a good place to sneak out of the recess teacher's sight. In second grade our teacher was Mrs. Margaret Viall. At recess time Mrs. Viall would always twirl the jump rope for us to jump. We sang jumping rope songs as we played which stayed with our recessed for many years. At Christmas time we had a program where we covered flashlights with colored crepe paper and paper plate backs. We swirled them around and it made many different colored lights. We also had a mayday program. At the mayday program each of us kids had partners and we danced around the maypole weaving long strands of cloth in certain patterns. It kind of looked like a checkerboard. Third grade rolled around and we had Miss Skurdall as our teacher. Miss Skurdall became the resource room teacher, and so our third grade room turned into the resource room. We had to go back to the second grade room and Mrs. Viall became our teacher again. She always told us that we missed her so much that we decided to come back to the second grade. That year we doubled up the second grade in her room so it made it a little more crowded than usual. It wasn't too bad though. In third grade Scott Royer came to join our class. He would prove to make life exciting for our class in the years to come. In third grade we also had a birthday party for someone and Mark didn't think the knife that was used to cut the cake looked sharp. He said, Oh, this knife doesn't look very sharp-here Sam, and he commenced to saw on Sam's arm. There was blood all over. Mark found out the knife was sharp and he learned not to try out knives on people. Or at least we hope he did! For fourth grade our teacher was Miss Susie Stanton. She brought laughter and music to our class with her guitar playing. We liked to sing songs such as Puff the magic dragon It's a small world after all . We played games such as swords up in which the person who found the word she said in the dictionary the fastest was the winner. We had a sea cave, a small area that was partitioned off at the corner of the room, with a ship's net and sand and shells glued on the dividers. We could read or just think by ourselves in the cave. We also got our first fishtank in fourth grade. We fed two big Oscar fish brine shrimp out of our hands. We also had some Jack Dempsey's angelfish and a fish that ate the algae out of the tank. Fourth grade was also the year when the boys learned to use peashooters. Mark chipped Michelle Burgess's tooth. He was always getting into trouble! Our class had its first pet day in fourth grade. Oh brother! Scott's cat went to the bathroom behind the fish tank and Scott puked cleaning it up. We also said the PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE everyday. Our fifth grade teacher was Miss Beverly Faber. We picked up Chris Funk, Dianna Willis, and Mitch Loomis that year. In fifth grade we got to be in the spelling bee and Jean Ady took second place. Girl's and boy's basketball was offered and some of us took it. Our sixth grade teacher was Mrs. Edith Osborne. We tumbled rocks until they were shiny and made jewelry out of them. Some of us started to play in the high school band that year. We had a fast math group and we made a cake using metric measurements. We sometimes were up to no good back at our math table though. One day we decided to chew snoose with Mrs. Osborne's coffee grounds. We all had our lips full and there was a big pile of coffee on the table when she came back to see what we were laughing about. Mark covered the coffee that was spilled with hands but Sheila had to go out in the hall because she was laughing so hard. We went to the J for a little field trip. Amy left us during sixth grade and Scott and Chris left us after the year was over. In seventh grade we got to switch classes. Mrs. Southern was our homeroom teacher but we also had Mr. Shutak for math and science. We had co-ed basketball that year and we played teams like Kinsey, Vida, and Circle. Some of us kids got in trouble in music class with Miss Schmucker and we had to clean the grade school bathrooms for a week. How repulsive! Our eighth grade homeroom teacher was Mr. Shutak but we also had Mr. Southern for History, English, and Spelling. Our girls and boys basketball teams were separate. For our eighth grade trip we went to Sleeping Buffalo to spend a couple of nights and go swimming. The boys collapsed the girl's tent three times in the middle of the night. We took another trip to the J and the boys detoured down to Grant's house to get some water while Mr. Shutak took the girls back to the school for some pop. We finally reached our graduation day and we were so excited. We had a good graduation with a lot of country kids and a dance followed at the VFW Hall. We finally reached high school but now we were on the bottom of the totem pole instead of at the top. Some country kids that joined us were Tammy Phipps, Dean Clark, John Saylor, Roger Chamberlin, Clint Thomas, Pam Kreider, and Carl Smart. We won first prize for our float at homecoming. Initiation was a blast! Everyone, especially the boys, were short, but as three years passed things would change. Tammy Quinlan joined us at the beginning of our sophomore year. Later the same year Dan Boots joined our class. We got our class rings and Tammy Quinlan and John Saylor were our homecoming candidates. Our junior year was a successful one. We put on the senior prom and banquet and spent many hours making the drab gym into a beautiful dance floor. Among other things, we sold magazines to raise money. Now our class is finally Seniors. We had a fun time initiating the freshmen. John Saylor and Sheila Whiteside were homecoming royalty. Now it's time for us to leave G.C.H.S. but we have a lot of good memories to cherish.
