I, in turn, woke Lavonne on my way to ring the wake-up bell for the Dorm. Another day at GCHS had begun. As I groped my way over to the school, 1 felt rather than saw Sis Shawver leaning against the rail watching Mr. Wagner raise the flag. Mary Billing hurried in ahead of me to open the office. Skip, Kit, Duane B., John, Shane H. were already goofing-off in the library. Of course, the early birds, Lena, Carol, Pat, Wanda n had been there studying for half an hour. Sandi M., Pete, Rhonda, Chad were staggering around the hall trying to get their eyes open. I watched out the window as the bus pulled up. Todd was making a pass at both Dixie Debbie, while Kirk held Sandi W. off. Dean Charles came rushing in right before the last bell and ran into several Seniors on their way to Eng- lish, discussing how they could bright- en Miss McCarthy's day Since they were having class in the library today, Dale Ann, Wanda I, l t, Ted, Sam, Juanita, Dale relaxed a little more than usual. Later they brought sim- ilar joy to Mr. Mansfield. (Note how eager to learn Brian Shawn look in Math.) I went to science. Mrs. Mans- field almost fainted when she saw Debbie, l tty, Michelle were all 7 A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A GCHS STUDENT actually in school--on the same day! Cindy G. I fated an excuse to go to the office and just happened into the Home Ec. room as we went by. They had made the most lus- cious smelling Mexican food and fenny, Rhonda, Anita, June were at the head of the line, filling their plates. Second period I waited to Home Ec. with Jeanne, but we didn’t cook. We just listened to a lecture by Mrs. Bray and smelled the aroma of Mexican food. As if that wasn’t bad enough, Juanita, Cathy, Ted, Wanda I, several other Govern- ment students got to watch TV next door in Mrs. looker’s room. I really did have to go to the rest room. It was only a little out of the way to peek in at April Lori typing, Chlo in Spanish class, and Fran June in the library. At the end of second period, Kat- rina, Deanna, I took fruit around to sell. Darrell lee G. bought four bananas each. I’ll refrain from making a comment. I think I went to geography 9 A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A GCHS STUDENT English, but I can’t really remember anything until the noon bell rang. Clyde nearly knocked me over as he headed out the back door for the caf- eteria. I could only go half speed in my high heels, so I ended up behind Carson, Glen, Dave S. Further up the line, Kent was expounding loudly. Over at a table, Perry, Randy, Kevin, Mike B., Wyatt, Fred were shovel- ing it in, so they could get in line for seconds. It took exactly 3 minutes for lunch, and then everybody headed uptown for more goodies. Brenda Terri G. bribed Dale into giving them a ride. At Ryan's, Nora was stealing Dave W. 's hat, and Dale Ann was going to work. On the other side of the street, Fatty was walking Cindy S. to work, and both were giggling like crazy over some secret joke. Myma, Julie, Jodi, I were head- ed for the Drug Store when we saw Jack B. coming towards us with his camera. Back at the school, Shane H. was throwing snowballs at everybody, and we could hear Jeff H. ’s unique laugh while we were still over by the grade school. We met Jenny going over there to TA. As I started inside, I saw Jim pinch Holly and was so shocked, I ran right into David F. All he said was, Oh, 11 NJ A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A GCHS STUDENT shut up. I needed a pencil before algebra, so I stopped in the office. Mrs. Edwards was in there discussing baby names with Mrs. Johnson. Mr. Deming came in and got so involved, telling them how beautiful his baby girl was, that I think he forgot what he came in for until Mr. McKinley called from the inner-sanctum. After 5th period (which was Laura's first period) naptime was over, things started buzzing again. Anita Sandi W. headed for the microscopes, while Fran, Luci, Diane, Lori went to A1 Baby's art class. As I went by, Ray was start- ing to grade English papers. In the shop, Mike L. was show- ering sparks all around. Upstairs, Cindy H, April were making beautiful music, while Miss Schmucker dreamed of Steve. Dean R. turned bright red at Lena's latest smart re- mark, but he never missed a note. When I got to P.E., Vince was already dressed out and Jay was coming in late. John L. was on the scaffold, hand- ing Mr. KLoksr a light bulb, while Jeff L. was seeing how close he could come to it with a volleyball. When the final bell rang, 109 students went 109 different directions. It was the first time all day that I’d seen Ron or Tom L. move faster than a snail. Mike Mike started up the snowball fight again. Holly lee were arguing over who got to drive the Chevy Luv home. Duane Duane went to work on their outfits. Rosene, Jean, Melodie headed for drill team practice, and Jason for the pool table. A streak of dark blue whizzed by. I caught a glimpse of Tom S. at the wheel and Mr. Bray holding on for dear life. After school, nearly everybody grabbed a basketball. ten, Randy, Chuck, Carson took theirs to the grade school playground. Boop, Bip, Penny Carol played intra- murals. Mr. KLoker had the B-squad doing the fumble drill. But some people, like April, Stewart, Lori, Jack O., Randy, Kelly, would rather feed their faces in the Drug Store than chase a ball. Of course, teachers always have time to play horseshoes, but some kids, have to work, such as Dan at Ryan's Grocery. Ies had a good supper fixed at the Dorm, but Anita, Wan- da in Iavonne hardly tasted it because they were so inter- ested in the WHITE SHADOW. On the way to the show, I looked in the window of the old grade school and saw Steve conducting a Rodeo Club meeting. I sat behind Terry Charlene at the show. ActuaUy, I was behind Terry and had to stand clear up to see over him. As I hurried back to the Dorm at 9:25, I saw the light on in the library and thought Rose Lervick had forgotten it. But Mrs. Brusett was in there mumbling to herself something about overdue deadlines. She was trimming pictures with the paper cutter, and was jerking the handle down like it was a guillotine. I made the mistake of asking her where the rest of the Remuda staff was. She became completely incoherent! I really would have liked to stay and help her, but you know how Mrs. Dunning is if you are late into the Dorm. After studying for several hours (I just threw that in, in case any teachers read this), I crawled into bed. I could still hear some town kids peeling out somewhere in the distance, but as far as I was concerned, another day at GCHS was at an end. ( ) fabulous ( ) bra-back riding? ) sexy Senior. Patrick Baugh, Skip Johnson, and Pete Shawver were the delegates from Jordan. The days were full of hectic activ- ity and sports competition. Schools were held on the topics of law, law enforcement, and legislative pro- cedure. Speeches were given during the week by such distinguished guests as Senator Max Baucus, Lt. Gov- ernor Ted Schwinden, Congressman Pat Williams, Congressman Ron Marlenee, Chief Justice Frank Has- well, and Joe Dean. Patrick was Director of Finance Administration for the city of Colter, and City Election Clerk. He ran for County Clerk and for the State Public Service Commis- sion, where he survived the pri- mary election, but was defeated in the general election. He was appointed Secretary of the Public Service Commission and was nam- ed Vice Chairman of the Senate Sub-Committee on Elections and Federal Relations. Ffete was Director of Parks Recreation for the city of Bow Arrow. He also ran for City Coun- cil and for County Assessor. Skip ran for Police Chief in the city of Granite. Girls State was held on the cam- pus of Carroll College in Helena on June 1-7. Wanda Lervick was the delegate from Jordan. Girls State was run on the same format as Boys State, except that the girls chose the party they wanted to be in, instead of being assigned to a party and then writing the platform for that party. The girls attended meetings on leadership training, legislative procedure, and several different seminars. They also toured the Capitol, the Supreme Court, and St. Helens Cathedral. Wanda was City Attorney for the city of Garnet. She ran for Sec- retary Treasurer for the city of Garnet and for Girls Nation, but was defeated in both races. 17 § anuyiA Sokiiclc TDcmSa ®a c£aij. 2)iume £BcJ!fA4Uj l 18 fiotluj. After 12 years of hard, hard work, 11 of us have made it through together. The only thing we can remem- ber about first grade is Kit W ille and Dawn Wolff getting caught kissing behind a tree. We got a good education! Mrs. Wille was our teacher. Second, third, and fourth grade were a blur, but we had some good teachers-Mrs. (Viall) Nelson, Mrs. Ward, and Mrs. Turner. In our fifth year of school, the boys got started in basketball and the girls got a little exper- ience in cheering. Our teacher was Mrs. Biastock. In our sixth grade year, we became very brave and began using the desks as stepping stones. Tlianks to our teacher. Miss Stranburg, none of us broke our necks. Seventh grade was very mem- orable. This was the year we learned the definition of GAB- Cathy Engdahl and Dale Hains had to write it at least 50 thou- sand times. Thanks to our teacher, Mr. Hopkins, we learned a lot about exploring caves with flashlights and sleeping bags. Our eighth grade year, we decided that it was time to grow up. We learned how to shoot rubber bands and never seemed to get caught. We also became aggressive and stole the answer sheet to a big test-which every- one seemed to do very, very well on. The teacher who led us through all of this was Mr. Milam. Eighth grade graduation marked the end of eight years of fun, but a new four years of fun began with Freshman Initiation. Hula Weeding and Tinker Bell Mac Donald really seemed to enjoy it. David Weeding and Wanda Ler- vick were our Homecoming King and Queen candidates, with David being selected King. To top it all off , we also took first place with our float. We thought we were really moving up in the world when we ordered our class rings our Sopho- more year. Chad FitzGerald and Cathy Engdahl were our Home- coming King and Queen candidates, with Cathy being selected Queen, When we were Juniors, we put on the Prom-entitled Ships That Pass In The Night”. Brian Mac Donald was selected Prom King. Skip Johnson and Dixie Green were our Homecoming King and Queen candidates. In our Senior year, Brian Mac Donald and Luci Helm were Homecoming King and Queen and we won the float contest. Now we await May 10th and our entrance into the wide world. 32 t SENIOR DIE-HARDS: Back Row-Brian MacDonald, Chad FitzGerald. Shawn FitzGerald, Duane Eng- dahl. Kneeling-Melodie Milroy. Girls take third at District The girls basketball season started out this year with eleven smiling, eager faces. The team con- sisted of four Seniors: Dale Hains, Wanda lervick, Cathy Engdahl, and Juanita Gould; four Juniors: Fran West, Cindy Hager, Carol Ritter, and Deanna Stan- ton; two Sophomores: Holly Billing and Lori West; and one Freshman: Melodie Milroy. Tire first games of the year were played at the Richey Invitational Tournament. We won the first game and then moved into the championship game. We lost to the Wibaux Longhorns, which placed us 2nd in the tournament. The season games went well this year, and many things made it this way. The greatest satisfaction of all must have been beating the Terry Terriers. It was the first time we have done that in a long time. The coach always said one day we could have a chocolate talk, but he always brought chalk instead of chocolate. Dale Hains seemed to really like the Rosebud girls, especially Jackie Bromley. The coach was very happy with our last practice before District, so he got a free shower. It’s too bad lie didn't know better than to leave his nice clothes on while he was doing it though. After the season games were over, the part of the season that we had been working for arrived. It was District Tournament. We won the first game against Wibaux and then lost the second to the Ekalaka Bull- dogs. This put us in the Saturday morning game a- gainst Busby. We won this game and advanced to the consolation game against Hysham. With luck from Cathy, with a dime in her sock, Dale Ann shaving her legs, and lots of hustle, we won that game. With tears in our eyes and smiles on our faces, we ran into the locker room. We knew that this win had given us all tickets to Divisional in Billings, We not only placed 3rd, but the band won a trophy, Cathy Engdahl was named MVP, and Dale Hains and Wanda Lervick were named to the Honorable Mention team. Cathy was also named to the A11-Conference team. Then came Divisional. We lost our first game to Absarokee and won the second against Broadview. We then lost to Custer, and this put us out of the tournament. Some of the high points of this tourna- ment were when some guys followed the bus all the way to where we were staying, and Annie Michol Deming being born. Dale and Wanda must have re- ally been hungry for donuts on Friday night. They wished so hard that a dozen donuts appeared at their door while they were sleeping. The annual Awards Banquet was held and the moth- ers made a terrific supper. Trophies were given to Cathy Engdahl for Best Defense and Captain and to Carol RittEr for Most Improved. Dale Hains, Juanita Gould, and Wanda Lervick were given medals for being Co-Captains. 60 VARSITY SCORES: RICHEY TOURNAMENT Jordan 58 VS Richey 53 Jordan 39 vs Wibaux 45 CONFERENCE FLAY Jordan 40 VS Terry 48 Jordan 28 vs Rosebud 30 Jordan 43 vs Busby 26 Jordan 34 vs Flevna 16 Jordan 52 vs Hysham 54 Jordan 33 vs Wibaux 36 Jordan 30 vs Ekalaka 48 Jordan 38 vs Wibaux 30 Jordan 34 vs Dodson 33 Jordan 36 vs Dodson 29 Jordan 33 vs Busby 53 Jordan 52 vs Hysham 63 Jordan 48 vs Rosebud 38 Jordan 37 vs Terry 35 Jordan 39 vs Flevna 26 Jordan 41 vs Ekalaka 56 DISTRICT 4-C TOURNAMENT Jordan 39 vs Wibaux 30 Jordan 36 vs Ekalaka 64 Jordan 60 vs Busby 40 Jordan 52 vs Hysham 41 DIVISIONAL TOURNAMENT Jordan 26 vs Absarokee 50 Jordan 49 vs Broadview 41 Jordan 30 vs Custer 48 JV SCORES: Jordan 22 vs Hysham 12 Jordan 8 vs Wibaux 26 Jordan 10 vs Ekalaka 22 Jordan 6 vs Wibaux 14 Jordan 14 vs Hysham 18 Jordan 7 vs Ekalaka 11 This page is sponsored by RYAN GROCERY LAUNDRY 61 Lucky dimes take us to DIVISIONALS This page is sponsored by ARTZ SPRAY SERVICE 62 63 BEHIND EVERY SPORT THERE ARE CHEERLEA TOP: Lavonne Coldwell. HOME COMING Homecoming kicked off to a good start Thursday night when the rain stopped long enough to hold the bonfire snake dance. After talks by the coaches and team captains, and several cheers by the cheerleaders, the dummy was thrown at the fire-most of it blowing away in the wind. The snake dance was then led up town. Friday night, the girls basket- ball team traveled to Terry and was defeated by the Terriers, 40 to 48. Saturday morning dawned bright and promised to stay nice for the day's activities. The parade started at noon in front of the high school and was led by the band. The Senior float was the win- ning float, with the Junior float coming in second and the Sopho- more float coming in third. The Freshmen, the faculty, and the girls basketball team also had floats. Everyone then went to the football field to watch the foot- ball team defeat the Rosebud Wranglers, 45 to 26. During half-time, Seniors Brian Mac Donald and Luci Helm, Juniors Steve MacDonald and Deanna Stanton, Sophomores Randy Pluhar and Phyllis Shawver, and Freshmen David Spencer and Lisa Fterez walked onto the field and Brian and Luci were announ- ced as the new Homecoming King and Queen. They were crowned by Doug Beckett and Lavonne Coldwell, last years King and Queen. The girls basketball team met the Rosebud Wranglers that night in the gym and lost, 28 to 30, after a hard fought game. After the basketball game, a dance was held in the multi-pur- pose room of the high school. TO MISS THIS SCHOOL AND MY OLD FRIENDS. -■— AS I WALK TO MEET THE BUS- ONE LAST TIME, I REMEMBER ALL THE ROUGH RIDES - TO SCHOOL, TO MEETS AND TO GAMES. BUT THEN, I START THINKING OF THE MANY PLACES THAT I CAN GO AND OF THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF PEOPLE THAT I WILL MEET. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO CHOOSING WHERE I WANT TO GO, SELECTING WHAT I WANT TO SEE, AND MEETING ALL OF THE CHALLENGES THAT I AM SURE ARE AWAITING ME. TERRY RYAN V W 0 c .
