We are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the first graduating class of GCHS. In honor of this we dedicate our 1977 RE MU DA to Ki A picture is worth a thousand words just as Hazel’s son, Orval, has done in his paintings below. These pictures paint an image of what Garfield County was like when Hazel Maben moved here from Detroit, Nebr. Hazel moved to Montana with her family in 1914 when the land was not yet completely settled. In fact, on the journey to Jordan some Indians camped with the family. This scared Hazel as it would any little girl traveling in a strange territory. Hazel, along with Ethel Thomas, made up the first graduating class of Garfield County High School. This graduation took place in 1917. A year later she took the test to get her teaching certificate. After passing the test she taught 15 terms in the county. In 1919 Hazel married Earl Frady. Together they raised their three children, Richard, Orval, and Iva Jean in the Van Norman area. Hazel is still happily living on the homestead she worked so hard to build. She takes an active interest in community affairs and enjoys visiting with people from every generation. 3
