Europe Aug. 28 . . . Everybody was telling their summer stories to- day. I guess the kids that had the wildest ones were the kids that went to Europe. Rod and Dick weren't there but Anita, Sally, Joyce, Therese and Miss Eaton filled me in on the scoop. To start things off right, there was a 12 hour layover in New York City. What a perfect time to write your first letter home or start a conver- sation and end up learning how to play cards English style. Soon after reaching London, everyone agreed on two things: England must have the greenest grass in the world and their suitcases were about 20 lbs. too heavy. Passfield Hall--with its home-cooked meals and lukewarm showers—was a welcome change from wandering around Picadilly Circus, The Tower of London, The Wax Museum and getting lost in the subway. A day of Oxford and Stratford-on-Avon is a step back in time--including a Gothic University, stone fences, and a performance at the Royal Shakespeare Theater. Quite a change from this was a taste of Picadilly Circus nightlife. After London they traveled through the English countryside to the White Cliffs of Dover. From there, they took a steamer ride across the Chan- nel, complete with fog, seagulls and salt spray. At last they arrived in Paris, for a ride down the Seine, a Mass at Notre Dame and a taste of that delicious French bread. There was hardly time to rest as they crossed the border and into Switzerland. Here they spent a day in the clouds—on top of Mt. Pilatus. Next, some wandering in narrow, winding streets and traditional folk music. Up early the next day for some really breath- taking scenery and a snowball fight. Before they knew it, they were in Italy where famous sculptures are right beside modern discos. The last stop was Rome—a blend of both the old and the new. Some of the group braved the crowds and got a glimpse of the Pope. Then it was Arrivedercci Roma Hello Home. Here are some of their pictures: Sally eating escargo (snails). Rod and Dick take advantage of the layover inN. Y. , while Miss Eaton changes some money. What now?? It's the Leaning Tower of Pisa. My gosh! They're eating whole loaves of bread. Here's the whole group in Paris. What's this? Getting to know the courier. And every- body recognizes Big Ben. 2

4 Winners Aug. 28 . . . Other students did exciting things this summer, also. Tony Harbaugh participated in a Student Leadership Workshop atM.S.U. in preparation for his job as Student Council President this year. He told me, This was one of the most reward- ing weeks of my life. We all (38) lived together, shared our troubles, and swapped many terrific ideas. M Therese Fogle attended Girls' State in Helena in June and has been raving about her good, en- lightening time ever since. Ed Ryan, Tom Helm, and Tony Harbaugh at- tended Boy's State but they have not been so verbal and enthusiastic as Therese. The Rodeo Club had a good summer. Six stu- dents competed at the State Rodeo in Hamilton. Diane Baker placed 4th in Girls' Cow Cutting and Colin Murnion placed 4th in Bull Riding. Clyde Mury, Rodeo Club President, placed sec- ond in Bareback and third in Bull Riding. This qualified him to attend Nationals in Wisconsin. He came in 17th out of about 200 contestants. He said he had a great time but the best part was gettin1 home. Susan Thomas was the 1974 Montana Buckskin Queen and as such competed in the Internation Buckskin Horse Association Queen contest in Illinois. We threw in a picture of Steve Weeding and one of DeWayne Murnion because they also went to state. I sure wish I would have had as nice a summer as some people did. Steve Pluhar, Tom Helm, and Cheryl Hafla are all driving new pickups and Tom Viall has a new car. It must be nice. I even overheard Miss Eaton talking about all of the great back-packing trips she went on. That must have been awfully fun. You should have seen all the freshman huddled together like a bunch of scared bunnies. I guess they must have reason to though, because al- ready I saw Deanna Ritter and Donna Weeding having to wash Tom Helm's pickup and I think my green Scrambler had better be coming up next on the list. But it must not be hurting them too bad because they keep going up to the Tastee Freez and that is where they are caught to do some work. Even I had fun after school tonight making fresh- man walk. There were whole car and pickup loads heading out of town and coming back emp- ty. Allen Clark had to walk 12 miles. That's quite a ways if you ask me.
