Garfield County High School REMUD. 1975 Jordan, Montana Pickles Private Persuings Europe Aug. 28 . . . Everybody was telling their summer stories to- day. I guess the kids that had the wildest ones were the kids that went to Europe. Rod and Dick weren't there but Anita, Sally, Joyce, Therese and Miss Eaton filled me in on the scoop. To start things off right, there was a 12 hour layover in New York City. What a perfect time to write your first letter home or start a conver- sation and end up learning how to play cards English style. Soon after reaching London, everyone agreed on two things: England must have the greenest grass in the world and their suitcases were about 20 lbs. too heavy. Passfield Hall--with its home-cooked meals and lukewarm showers—was a welcome change from wandering around Picadilly Circus, The Tower of London, The Wax Museum and getting lost in the subway. A day of Oxford and Stratford-on-Avon is a step back in time--including a Gothic University, stone fences, and a performance at the Royal Shakespeare Theater. Quite a change from this was a taste of Picadilly Circus nightlife. After London they traveled through the English countryside to the White Cliffs of Dover. From there, they took a steamer ride across the Chan- nel, complete with fog, seagulls and salt spray. At last they arrived in Paris, for a ride down the Seine, a Mass at Notre Dame and a taste of that delicious French bread. There was hardly time to rest as they crossed the border and into Switzerland. Here they spent a day in the clouds—on top of Mt. Pilatus. Next, some wandering in narrow, winding streets and traditional folk music. Up early the next day for some really breath- taking scenery and a snowball fight. Before they knew it, they were in Italy where famous sculptures are right beside modern discos. The last stop was Rome—a blend of both the old and the new. Some of the group braved the crowds and got a glimpse of the Pope. Then it was Arrivedercci Roma Hello Home. Here are some of their pictures: Sally eating escargo (snails). Rod and Dick take advantage of the layover inN. Y. , while Miss Eaton changes some money. What now?? It's the Leaning Tower of Pisa. My gosh! They're eating whole loaves of bread. Here's the whole group in Paris. What's this? Getting to know the courier. And every- body recognizes Big Ben. 2 4 Winners Aug. 28 . . . Other students did exciting things this summer, also. Tony Harbaugh participated in a Student Leadership Workshop atM.S.U. in preparation for his job as Student Council President this year. He told me, This was one of the most reward- ing weeks of my life. We all (38) lived together, shared our troubles, and swapped many terrific ideas. M Therese Fogle attended Girls' State in Helena in June and has been raving about her good, en- lightening time ever since. Ed Ryan, Tom Helm, and Tony Harbaugh at- tended Boy's State but they have not been so verbal and enthusiastic as Therese. The Rodeo Club had a good summer. Six stu- dents competed at the State Rodeo in Hamilton. Diane Baker placed 4th in Girls' Cow Cutting and Colin Murnion placed 4th in Bull Riding. Clyde Mury, Rodeo Club President, placed sec- ond in Bareback and third in Bull Riding. This qualified him to attend Nationals in Wisconsin. He came in 17th out of about 200 contestants. He said he had a great time but the best part was gettin1 home. Susan Thomas was the 1974 Montana Buckskin Queen and as such competed in the Internation Buckskin Horse Association Queen contest in Illinois. We threw in a picture of Steve Weeding and one of DeWayne Murnion because they also went to state. I sure wish I would have had as nice a summer as some people did. Steve Pluhar, Tom Helm, and Cheryl Hafla are all driving new pickups and Tom Viall has a new car. It must be nice. I even overheard Miss Eaton talking about all of the great back-packing trips she went on. That must have been awfully fun. You should have seen all the freshman huddled together like a bunch of scared bunnies. I guess they must have reason to though, because al- ready I saw Deanna Ritter and Donna Weeding having to wash Tom Helm's pickup and I think my green Scrambler had better be coming up next on the list. But it must not be hurting them too bad because they keep going up to the Tastee Freez and that is where they are caught to do some work. Even I had fun after school tonight making fresh- man walk. There were whole car and pickup loads heading out of town and coming back emp- ty. Allen Clark had to walk 12 miles. That's quite a ways if you ask me. Improvements Aug. 28 . . . Before I went to school today. I'd heard that there had been a lot of changes. There have been, too. The hall was full of stoves, sewing machines, and jillions of boxes. The Home Ec. room was full of boards, sawdust and Joey and Don South. The Gym was full of Home Ec. stu- dents and Mrs. Ostby's indignation. But I'm sure everything will turn out beautiful. Speaking of beautiful, I nearly flipped when I saw the beards that Mr. Ostby and Mr. Martin sprouted during the summer. Not bad, really. There are new drapes up in the library and one whole wall is covered with stuff Mrs. Brusett brought back from Guatamala and Honduras. That 10, 000 mile trip with her sister and their 4 teen-age girls in the old green station wagon was all she talked about all day. Ostby's were also bubbling over with trip lore. They went to a Home Ec. convention in Cali- fornia. Mrs. O bought something in every little shop in San Francisco and Mr. O came home with an ulcer. In typing we heard all about Mr. Hunt's float trip down the Yellowstone. Tony Harbaugh, Tom Viall, Colleen and Lori Saylor and Rene Irish are all full of wild tales about their trips to the World's Fair in Spokane. The P. E. Classes went over to the pool today. That is so neat. I think the pool is the greatest thing that ever happened to Garfield County. I really, really do. I almost forgot. This morning as I was going to school, I met Les Rudolph pulling the new bleachers right down the road. Well, not really pulling right then because one wheel had fallen off. I asked him why he had put wheels on them and he told me that Mr. Rogers wanted him to pull the bleachers back and forth to follow the action of the football games. The Booster Club holds its regular monthly meetings. The work to add support to GCHS activities. They elected Tom Billing as their president and he served them very well. The Booster Club started a new project this year, the booster bus, which went to many away games. They are all pulling together to support us and this is a very great asset to us. I think it is a neat choice. As long as I can remember they have been right there at the Fair, making it a big success. Mike Danklefsen was bom in Germany in 1882 and came to Garfield County with his wife, Eliza, in the spring of 1912. Eliza was bom in Iowa in 1887. They had two children. Edna, who married Robert Cozzens, had 4 children; Earl, Bernice, Dorthy and Linda. Their son Earl died in 1928. In 1925 they took in Ray and Ella (Tootie) Danklefsen and raised them as their own. In 1951 Mike was elected the first mayor of Jordan. During the eight years that he filled that post, Jordan got city water, a sewer system, R.E.A., a dial telephone and a bank. His deep devotion for helping the town of Jordan has continued on through today, and it is appreciated by all. Oh! No! “Four Years of These” 10 This page sponsored by FOSTER JORDAN DRUG CO. Coach Hunt Mtlstangs are finally in the action, Homecoming Oct. 12 ... . What a day! We actually won our first Football game in 6 years. It's the first conference game we have ever won. Thanks to Coach Rogers. But what a day. The wind was blowing and it was quite cold. The senior float was blown apart before it even reached the high school. As the parade went around town the judges picked the Freshman and Juniors float as tying for the winner. The grade school even partici- pated this year. It really seemed strange to see signs saying class of '81', '82' etc. Tom Viall was so excited after the game that he got a speeding ticket while buzzing around town in his new car. The Homecoming dance was a great success. Roxie recruited her brother Tim Lervick and his gang the Sunrise Band. They provided us with some very good music. There was a good turn out which was surprising because most school dances are a flop. Well, even though the Seniors lost out on the float we came up with the winning royalty. Seniors Rene Irish and Ed Ryan became the Homecoming Queen and King. Cheerleaders: Colleen Murnion, Anita Landers, Therese Murnion, Lori Saylor. Bibeau. It seems as if the year will start out as usual with no one having their articles in and I as a new editor not really knowing if I am doing everything right. Staff plans Remuda This year tire GCHS Remuda will be based around a diary written by Irene Lilianthal, editor, entitled Rickie's Private Pursuings. She and her staff will add to it each week. Then with the help of the photographers, the annual will take its shape. The publishers have pro- mised to have our 1975 annuals here in May. this year so everybody can have them signed before school is out. Ftearl Highland is assistant editor; Lynn Ha ins, managing editor; Joyce Bateman, treasurer. Mrs. Brusett will sponsor the-make- up part of the annual. A list of the alumni since 1917 will be included this year. Also the grade school group pictures will be on the ad pages. This has proved to be a good selling factor. Already it has been a record-breaking year for selling ads. This means there will be more pages in the annual. Mr. Hunt is sponsoring the photography; end of the yearbook. Helping him are Tom, Therese, and Robert Fogle, Gary Dick, Tony Mumion and Bonnie Ryan. At least one of them can be seen with their camera every day. Snapshots really help to make a yearbook interesting, so this year's should be great. Staff members will be sell- ing ads in Jordan this coming week and expect good response. Because of this and the ads already sold, the annual will be bigger this year but will still sell for $6. 00. Mr. Hunt in the Dark Room. I'm sitting here trying to think of all the things that have gone on with the Senior class itself and will go on in the future. I can think of all the improvements that have been made: remodeling of the high school, the build- ing of the new gym, trackfield and bleachers being made, the different teachers and kids I've been around and have been able to go to school with, of all the activities in school and after school, last but not least, of the things I've learned, believe it or not. (Sentence structure was not one of them.) I know I'll miss all these things and I think I'll miss the senior class of 75 the most. I'll remember all of the special, dumb and stupid things we've done together. I just hope everybody will remember it as I do. The Freshman year was kind of scarey but we didn't let that year's seniors know, especially the night of our initiation. Little things like this make it all worthwhile. Now the future, I don't know what it holds for me or anyone. I guess I will just take it as it comes. I just hope everyone is as great in 10 years as they are now. 57 This page is sponsored by BIG DRY LUMBER CO. Senior Wills I, DAN ARTZ, will-------, if somebody will let me. Senior Prophecy HMM-no one seemed to be around as I stepped into the fashionable Sporting Goods Store owned and operated by Ed Ryan. I ambled across the shag carpeted floor of Ed's Sporting Good's just as Ed came in from a back room. How's things at Tom's Taxidermy? Been doing much Mounting lately? , he greeted me. No, just another illegal eagle for Dennis West. Been kind of worried about Dennis because he hasn't made it off his Dude Ranch for the Happy Hour for the last two nights. Our short conversation was abruptly interrupted as the Siren of Highway Patrolman Pat Barnes pulled Randy Brusett to the side of the street. Randy was back in town from the Brusett Ponderosa chasing Freshman girls. When will he ever grow up? , mused Ed, as Randy drove off with his 29th, reckless driving ticket since he graduated. As Pat peeled off in his new patrol car the street curb in front of Rene's Beauty Shop was left bare. Rene Irish and Lynn Hains opened shop shortly after Lynn returned from an Army Tour of Europe. Just then the door of the Beauty Parlor busted open and out walked Buc Viall with the nicest hair in town. Taking advantage of his all-conference ability Tom went out to play college football and now coaches the Jordan Mustangs, the longest-haired team in the state. Dick Barbula, his assistant was waiting patiently in front for Tom to head for practice. Just then, Monte Billings and Gary Flint, who solved the World's energy crisis by combining their land after the biggest oil field in the world was found on the Big Dry, walked in. Now millionaires, they were discussing their casinos in Vegas and their Pro Basketball team named the Vegas Derricks, managed by our old Manager Gary Dick. They came to the counter with a $200.00 sleeping bag that they were going to send to a faithful old friend, Gene FitzGerald, who is stationed in Alaska setting up missile bases. Half an hour later, just as we were about to go to coffee at Pauline's Cafe and Lounge, in walks the fogle cousins, Robert and Therese, with the daily Jordan Blab. Therese has long since taken over as editor and Robert is the widely-known photographer for the paper. As we open the paper, we read, Harbaugh Wins Another Impossible Case. Tony has gained a reputation of his Excellence in the field of being an Attorney. Also on the front page, we see a write-up on Leta Bateman's latest million seller paperback Lover Lonliness . We quickly turned to the sports page to see that Dan Artz has just won the Indy 500 and $2000, 00 in cash. Another classmate, Roxie Lervick, is trying for the US Olympic team in the high jump. Another article tells of the Texas Longhorns upsetting the fighting Irish of Notre Dame, reminding us that Anita Landers is now captain of the Texas cheer- leading team. She is majoring in Music. Turning to the comic page, our eyes caught an unfamiliar column in the problem comer. It's entitled Dear Vicki , Vicki Tenny's column replaced Ann Landers. As we read through the column we see a letter from former Sally Fitch who is having problems with her fourth marriage. Checking the T.V. Log in the back of the paper we see where a new T.V. series in premiering Irene Lilienthal, who got tired of her head nurse job at Medical Center, is the star of the new one-hour comedy entitled Pickles for Sale. Flipping back to the Sports page we see where Colin and DeWayne Murnion both made it to the National Finals Rodeo. Colin in Bareback and DeWayne in the Bulls. It was after 12:00 by now so we decided to go Pauline's Cafe for a bite to eat. As we walked in we saw Jim McWilliams and Don Engdahl with their wives former Carla Rogge and Cheryl Hafla. Don, a dirt mover, and Jim, a big time wheat farmer, are both covered with dust as they just got in from working the fields. Strangely enough in walked Steve Pluhar and his custom combining crew. Bill Sloan his foreman tells of the hot days and the life out at Carter Spells where he works in the off season. Elaine Roufley who told us she is on vacation from her Computer Programing Job took our orders with a smile. The door crashed open and in ran Cheryl's babysitter, Betty Losinski, happily telling Don she finally got all of the Engdahl's 6 kids to sleep. After dinner we started to cross the street to look at some of Tom's taxidermy work. We had to wait for the high school band under the direction of Rita Hansard to march by playing the old school song, On Wisconsin. We walked into the shop and Ed said, You forgot to tear off the last month on the calender. You're right, I said and I tore off the page. As we saw May, 1985, we both thought of the same thing. It had been ten years since we had so sorrowfully left the halls of good old GCHS. Although we still missed it sore- fully, we were glad our classmates had made it so good. And we realized afresh how really great the class of 75 was and how unforgettable our mark on the world will be. It is very rare that 15 kids of a class will go all 12 years of school together. I think it1 s neat that so many of us have come all the way together. Being together this long has made our class more close to one another in what ever we do. The one thing I remember the most is the day in the first grade when Darlene Hinther, who went all but last year of school with us, flooded the floor. She later became known as puddles. Remembrance such as these have really made me thing how great it has really been. The Living End 96 ) VOICE OF DEMOCRACY Above: Mrs. Marie Burgess presents Charlie Diede with his award as Pearl Highland waits for hers. Charlie Diede who, in his speech on My Responsibility as a Citizen, is quoted as follows: A citizen's responsibilities are the basis of this country ... I want America's citizens to be the citizens our founders envisioned: responsible, in- formed, and involved, is on the far left below. Pearl Highland, below center, and Colleen Saylor, below right, tied for second place. Barb Guosanburu came in second. OPEN OP YOUR WORLD Leta and Joyce Bateman came in second in the state for their bumper sticker. Dan Artz scored the highest in the Betty Crocker Search for Leadership in Family Living Contest Tom Viall made the high- est score on the annual Mr. Hunt and Mr. Rogers Math test. made Snoopy in April. 100 Tammi Grimm Jean Long Steve Baertsch June 4....... This is the last page of the annual. I know there are pages following it, but this is the last one to be prepared for the printers. Pearl has finished her pages and gone home; Bonnie Brusett is yelling at her Mom to go homo; and I don’t know what to do with this page. We desperately need a photographer to produce some pictures that were never taken. But I’ll list the people below and you try to visualize them. Like think of pulsating grey matter for the Honor Society — Leta Bateman, Tony Harbaugh, Irene Lilianth, Anita Landers and Charles Diede. We were far sighted enough to get pictures of the kids who came to school after the main part of the annual was sent to the publishers. The three freshman are on the top row. On the second row is Julene who joined our great Senior Class. Bev and Bonnie Ryan, Tom Fogle and Joyce Bateman had PERFECT ATTENDANCE all year. I was going to add “Of course, the office only counts bodies, not minds’’ but since they are such good kids, I won't. Now think of rippling muscles. These people were announced Awards Day: Most Valuable Players Dick Barbula for Track Tony Harbaugh for Boy's Basketball Roxie Lervick for Girl's Basketball Tom Vial for Football Best All-Around athletes were Ed Ryan and Roxie Lervick. The most improved players were Donna Weeding and Pat Gibbs. Actually there were hundreds of awards given out that day so we will quit right here. Sorry, all you other good people. There is still some space above, so we’re putting in a picture of dear ole main street. It has furnished us with so many happy hours of cruising. We chose this particular snap so Karen Mury can study the flying saucer hovering over Ryan’s Grocery. Now I am going home to pleasant dreams! The first relaxed night I've had since 1 started this Remuda a year ago. Good Night. 101 SADIE HAWKINS “THE COUNTRY COWBOYS” Mr. Eaton Evelyn Ritter and Carol Watson M.C.’s Rita H. and Roxie L. April 30.......... The Sadie Hawkin’s Dance was great last night — even if I didn't catch a man. It is always the one dance about everybody shows up for — even old grads like Johnny Stanton and Frank Edwards. Even some mothers came “well” disguised, but when Deanna Ritter saw them she said, “Oh, Mother!” As usual the Saga Staff sponsored it and Rita and Roxie made good M.C.'s. Mr. Eaton led one dance, can't think what he called it, but he had everybody shaking every part of their body. I got the award for the best Lil Abner. That might be why I didn’t catch a man. Dirk Currey was the best dressed boy and Lynn Haines the best dressed girl. The biggest flirts were Dan Artz and Brent Murnion. The mushiest couple was Clay Taylor and Karen Thomas. Sunday, May 11........... Wow! The juniors really out- did themselves with the Prom and Banquet. The junior mother’s prepared the Dinner Firday night. It was delicious from the ”Coun try Sunshine” Appetizer to Mrs. Cameron’s dessert. Tom Helm read the class prophecy and Ed Ryan read the class will. Flora Cameron and Sonja Rice had gathered hu- morous stories from senior mothers and read them while Mary Pat Watson showed slides of the senior’s baby pictures. Everybody nearly fell on the floor laughing when they read about Tom Viall standing on the street corner calling, “Here, Woman, Here, Woman.” 103 PROM May 11......... The Prom was neat, too. The couples had to cross a stream on a quaint old bridge to enter the Country Sunshine and be surround ed by original landscapes by junior artists. At 12:30 Custer’s Last Band played a special number, Music to Wreck a Prom By. 105 GCHS TRACK TEAMS SUNDAY. JUNE 1. 1975 . . . This year the Boy’s Track team has been very successful in many ways. Old school records that have been broken by the boys were the 140 by Dick Barbula, upper left photo, who ran it in 52.1 which is 2.6 seconds off the old record and Tony Harbaugh, upper right, got by the high jump record of 6’1 by jumping 6 1 V. Pat Gibbs, pictured at bottom center, Ed Ryan, Tony, and Dick represented Jordan at the State Track Meet in Missoula earlier this week. They 106 competed as a team in the mile relay. Tony competed in the high jump event, Ed competed in the 880, and Dick competed in the 100 yard dash, the 220, and placed fifth in the 440 to get Jordan’s only point. The members of the track team that didn’t make it to State, but com peted at most of the meets, were Scott Guptill, bottom left, Tony Murnion, just to the right of Scott, Charles Diede, bottom right, and Tom Helm, just to the left of Charles. KEEP ON A TRUCKIN' The girls were also very successful this year. Donna Weeding, bottom left, broke the Divisional record in the mile by running it in 5 minutes 45 seconds and the 880 in 2 minutes 27.6 seconds. She went on to State to win the mile and take second in the 880. Roxie Lervick, standing in the center of the above right photo, and Bonnie Ryan, standing at the left of the same photo, were the other two girls who competed at the State meet. Roxie competed in the high jump, the 220, and placed third in the 440. Bonnie competed in the 880. Although they didn’t make it to state, Teresa Murnion, the hurdler in the three bottom right photos, Sandy Lervick, pictured top left, and Lori Saylor, pictured in the lower center photo, built up points for the girl’s track team at track meets. 107 108 Colin Murnion — All-Around Cowboy May 21... After being postponed twice, the rodeo finally took place yesterday even though it was cold and rainy. A little rain and mud never stopped a good rodeo hand or an annual photo- grapher. I do have to go back and finish the annual supplement, but I'm too depressed to even think about it right now. I've been happily looking forward to graduation so long that I was totally unprepared for the flood of tears that came as I walked back down that aisle. At least I wasn't the worst one. Roxie cried all the way up the aisle! And Rita bawled out loud. Even Mrs. O got so choked up she went home without going thru the line. 1 didn't see Rene crying. Guess when you are wearing a ring, graduation isn't so sad. I love Father Zabrocki! His talk at Baccalaureate only lasted 15 minutes, but every word counted. Judi Eaton sang The Lord's Prayer for Benediction. At graduation Anita and 1 got to give speeches as a reward for being Valedictorian and Salutatorian. Big Deal! At least, I got a few things off my chest. Anita and Elaine both got scholarships. James Hoffman from Dawson College gave the address. I won’t even mention what all went on after graduation — like certain boys running when they saw car lights coming and tripping in a hole. All the seniors are already tired of people asking them what they are going to do next year. 1 really don't know and right now 1 don’t care. Now 1 should quit this and start writing Thank You notes. They say Every cloud has a silver lining and from the looks of the packages and envelopes last night, all the seniors ended up with a lot of silver. That does ease the pain of leaving dear old GCHS. 110 INDEX SENIORS Artz, Dan 39, 49, 51, 56, 60, 77 Barbula, Richard 16, 39, 49, 56, 60, 74, 77, 106 Barnes, Patrick 37, 49, 55, 56. 60, 77, 80 Bateman, Leta 29, 49, 51, 56, 69 77 Billing, Monte 39, 49, 50, 56 77 Brusett, Randy 5, 10, 15, 16, 17, 44, 45, 50, 56, 74. 76, 77, 111 Chamberlin, Pauline 46, 54, 56, 70, 77, 78 Dick, Gary 16, 40, 42, 45, 50, 53, 55, 56, 74, 77, 78 Engdahl, Donald 50, 56, 60, 77, 81 Fitch, Sally 2, 3, 28. 39, 50, 56, 72, 75, 77, 110 Fitzgerald, George 16, 20, 51, 60. 74, 77, 110 Flint, Gary 56, 57, 69, 75, 77, 79 Fogle, Therese 2, 3, 4, 12, 36, 37, 50, 51, 56, 60, 75, 77, 80 Fogle, Robert 16, 37, 38, 40, 51, 53, 56 74, 80, 99 Hafla, Cheryl 51, 56, 77, 78, 80 Hains, Lynn 30, 31. 52, 57, 60, 77, 111 Hansard, Rita 29, 36, 37, 39, 52, 56, 69, 75, 77, 80. 102, 1 10 Harbaugh, Tony 5, 17, 42, 44, 45, 49, 52, 56, 60, 77. 105, 106 Helm, Tom 5, 16, 17, 44, 48, 56, 62, 74, 77, 106 Hinther, Darlene 111 Irish, Rene 15, 17,29,52,56, 62,77,79 Landers, Anita 2, 3, 14, 17, 19, 23, 29, 36, 37, 42, 43, 53, 57, 60, 69, 74, 75, 77, 99, 103, 111 Lervick, Roxie 12, 17, 19, 23, 29, 30, 31, 36, 37, 42, 43, 46, 48, 53, 57. 66. 77, 99, 102, 107 Lilienthal, Irene 1, 12, 28, 36, 39, 40, 41, 46, 48, 51, 53, 57, 60, 63, 66, 75, 77, 96, 111 Losinski, Betty 52, 53, 57, 66, 77, 79, 80 McWilliams, James 13, 16, 22, 53, 57, 74, 77, 111 Murnion, Colin 5, 21, 54, 57. 60, 76, 77, 111 Murnion, DeWavne 5, 54, 57, 60, 72, 76, 77 Pluhar, Steve 54, 57, 72, 77 Rogge.
