'ftyty l Sc umC OltOXCf, f Garfield County High School The first school in Jordan, a dugout on the banks of the Big Dry Creek, was established in approximately 1903. The handful of students who attended were under the instruction of a man who was a colorful and not too complimentary character. Later, he gave up teaching as a career. A few years later, the building which is now the Rio Theater was used for a schoolhouse. In 1914 the first high school was established, and the building served both high school and grade school students. Miss Ericson taught the grades and the eight high school students. The high school kept advancing, and by 1917 there was a staff of four teachers and a student body of forty. Some of the courses offered to the students at this time were home economics, physics, four years of Latin, four years of English, mathematics, first and second year algebra, and plane and solid geometry. In 1928 the ever increasing Jordan District High School decided to change its name. Thereafter, it was known as the Garfield County High School, a county wide public high school financed by the people of Gar- field county instead of by the Jordan District. In 1936 the old high school was abolished, and a new building was constructed, which serves the people of Garfield County today and which has served them for the past eighteen years. Today, the Garfield County High School has an attendance of one hundred eleven students and seven teachers; it offers thirty- two courses and any correspondence course which the student may wish to take in his four year term. 9 A.
