In the fall of 1940, twenty-one shy but brave youngsters gathered at the Jordan Public Grade School for the first time. We were Dick Sturtz, Richard Leuschen, Francis Kountz, Russel Wheeler, David Gibbs, Harry Dell Foster, Selma Swan- son, Mary Ann Sturtz, Melvin Mart, Allan Ronning, Fred Brown, Jim Tolfson, Donald Ritter, Caroline Hawkinson, Gertrude Hinther, Mildred Bozarth, Darlene Thomas, Betty Lou Brown, James Alexander, Henry Jesson, and Jim Grimes. Mrs. Beachamp was waiting to greet us and start us in our first year of education. We were assured by everyone how easy those twelve years of school were going to be, but it seems that we found it just the other way around. As the years of grade school went along we dropped some students and gained others. At the end of eight long years ten eighth graders gathered at the High School gym for Graduation, where they received their hard earned diplomas and were ready to start four years of High School. The year of 1949 saw twenty four green and apprehensive Freshmen enter High School. We were: Mary Ann Sturtz, Arlys Engdahl, Marilyn Hayhurst, May June Anderson, Ardiena Curtis, Carol Curtis, Darlene Curtis, Ardella Ady, Helen Watson, Barbara Bauman, Dollie Williams, Edwin Trumbo, Larry Engdahl, Rich- ard Leuschen, Fred Brown, Joe Twitchell, Allen Barnes, James Barnes, James Alexander, Charles Wilson, Allan Ronning, David Gibbs, Dennis Ware, and Glen Jepson. We elected Dennis Ware president; Richard Leuschen, Vice-pres.; Charles Wilson, sec. and Student Council Representatives were Barbara Bauman and Allan Ronning. In our Sophomore year we gained one student, Selma Swanson, and lost two, Glen Jepson and Dennis Ware. Charles Wilson was president, Richard Leuschen Vice-pres., Arlys Engdahl, secretary, Allan Ronning and Barbara Bauman Stu- dent Council Representatives. Our Junior year was a duplicate of the previous year except for gaining one student Clara Stanton and then losing both her and May June Anderson. That year we put on the Junior Play The Scarlet Shadow and sponsored the Junior- Senior Prom which had a Netherlands theme. We also had a bake sale which was quite successful. Charles Wilson was again elected president, Selma Swan- son, Vice-president, Marilyn Hayhurst, secretary, Arlys Engdahl and Jim Barnes were Student Council Representatives. In our Senior year we elected Jim Barnes president, Richard Leuschen, Vice- president, Art Gallinger, secretary, Marilyn Hayhurst and Charles Pangburn were Student Council Representatives. Art Gallinger was elected editor of the Remuda, Selma Swanson, assis't editor with Raymond Clauson, Mary Ann Sturtz, Darlene Curtis, and Allen Barnes filling the other important posts of the publishing of this Remuda. We initiated the Freshmen for a week and had a party in which they became full-fledged members of high school. Our play was a three act comedy Green Grow the Onions which was dir- ected by Mr. Schnebly. We also took part in a Students' Amateur Show which was held this year. Of the twenty-one students who started in the first grade only Mary Ann Sturtz, Richard Leuschen, and James Alexander have received all their education here in Jordan. Thus, perhaps twelve of the most important years of our lives have ended. ---Helen Watson and Carol Curtis 14
