FOREWORD We the class of 53' are proud to pre- sent to you the Remuda. We hope that in the future years you may look back and re- call the good old days, and pleasant memo- ries of Garfield County High School. At this time we wish to express our gratitude to the student body and faculty members of G. C. H. S. and the advertis- ers for their co-operation. REMUDA Staff DEDICATION Dedicated to - - - MR. FRANK GLICKO We hereby dedicate the 1953 Remuda to a true teacher and coach, and a sincere friend of the student body and faculty members for his years of faithful service to Garfield County High School. Graduating Class of 1953 2 SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE Louis M. Schnebly Remember that man's life lies all within this present, as't were but a hair1 s-breath of time; as for the rest, the past is gone, the future yet unseen. Short, therefore, is man's life, and narrow is the corner of the earth wherein he dwells, therefore, let every act and speech and purpose be framed as though this moment thou mightest take thy leave of life. 3 OUH ADMINISTRATION SCHOOL BOARD LEFT TO RIGHT: Andrew Hebrew, Mrs. Pollard, Pete Ronning, Ralph Mc- Williams, Mr. Schnebly, Clell O’Connor. C. H. S. We sincerely hope they can be as quiet and dignified as we have been. To the Sophomores we will our love of school and excuses to get out of classes (they will need them to graduate). To the Freshmen (who need the most) we will our patience and endurance in hopes that they will use it to graduate. To the faculty we leave our thanks and good will (no grey hairs, we hope). We as individuals here by will: I, Joe Twitchell, will my place at the table in the dorm to Curtis McWil- liams who needs a permanent place. I, Allen Barnes, will my nick name Baldy to Mr. Jacobson and hope he appreciates it as much as I do. I, Jim Barnes, will my ability to get along with women to Buddy Toble who seems to be failing. I, Larry Engdahl, will my pickup to anyone who thinks they are smart enough to keep it running as I have in the past year. I, Ardella Ady, will the grades on my report card to anyone who thinks they have nerve enough to take them home. I, Raymond Clauson, will my strong and muscular body to Baan Dee Wille so he may fight his way through high school as I have. I, Carol Curtis, will my freckles to Ruth Rath so she can have a tan. I, Darlene Curtis, will my ability to argue my way out of trouble with the teachers to Dean McWilliams who doesn't seem to be having very good luck. I, Marilyn Hayhurst, will my blonde hair and blue eyes to Jerry Coldwell. I, Art Gallinger, will my shortness to Irene Schmidt but it looks like it's kind of late. I, Charles Wilson, will my brains to anyone that will take the trouble to scrape them off the G. C. H. S. walls where they have slowly splattered for the past four years. I, Mary Ann Sturtz, will my attendance record to anyone who thinks they can resist the temptation of playing hookey for as long as I have. I, Selma Swanson, will my nickname Smiley to Twila Schwindtwho could use a few smiles. I, Richard Leauschen, will my sunny nature to Mr. Hopper who can cer- tainly use it at times. (Journalism) I, Charles Pagburn, will nothing as I'm having a hard time getting by now. I, Arlys Engdahl, will my slenderness to Margie Foster so she won't have to watch her diet quite so close. I, Helen Watson, will anything I have to anyone who thinks they can get some good out of it. I, David Gibbs, will my ability to pick up paper to anyone caught throwing erasers during second period study hall. 12 CLASS PROPHECY It is now the year of 1973. We find the Senior Class of 1953 holding their annual reunion on the corner by the Hell Creek Bar. The meeting was called to order by a slightly grey, distinguished looking, man who we recognized as Jim Barnes. He tells us that he is married, has twelve sons and is the governor of Montana. After inquiring around find that the rest of the class of 53 seemed to be do- ing pretty well for themselves. Charles Pangburn tells us that he is captain of the All American Basketball team and is now practicing for the World Championship trophy. Darlene Curtis could not attend the reunion because she is president of the Art Teachers Organization which is holding a convention in New York City. Marilyn Hayhurst and Helen Watson just returned from a safari in Africa and are still on a man hunt. Dr. Selma Swanson is the head doctor of the largest Veterans' Hospital in the United States. James Alexander is now president of a fish hatchery in Alaska and has quite a bit of trouble when it comes to women and business. Mary Ann Sturtz sent a telegram telling us that she is the owner of Sturtz Inc., the largest movie chain in the United States. Richard Leuschen informed us that he is an important peanut vender in the Bronx Zoo in New York City. Raymond Clauson, Carol Curtis, and Arthur Gallinger all arrived together from New York where Arthur is a big play producer. His latest production is The Jordan Story , which was written by the well-known playwright, Raymond Clauson and stars the Academy Award Winner Carol Curtis. Arlys Engdahl is editor of the World Times , the world famous newspaper that has more news, gossip, and distribution than anyother paper in the world. Joe Twitchell owns a 100,000, acre spread and is raising horses for dog mcdi. . All we have to do to see David Gibbs is walk around the corner and into the Hell Creek Bar where he is chief bartender. Allen Barnes tells us he is now raising tobacco in North Carolina and is fast becoming a multimillionaire. The most shocking news of all was to find Ardella Ady and Larry Engdahl married. They are working for The Tatum-Seaboard circus as The Bearded Lady and the Mad Montana Monster Wrestler . After drinking champagne, telling tales of their High School Days and paint- ing the town red , they bid each other a fond adieu and went merrily back to their pursuits. Ardella Ady H In the fall of 1940, twenty-one shy but brave youngsters gathered at the Jordan Public Grade School for the first time. We were Dick Sturtz, Richard Leuschen, Francis Kountz, Russel Wheeler, David Gibbs, Harry Dell Foster, Selma Swan- son, Mary Ann Sturtz, Melvin Mart, Allan Ronning, Fred Brown, Jim Tolfson, Donald Ritter, Caroline Hawkinson, Gertrude Hinther, Mildred Bozarth, Darlene Thomas, Betty Lou Brown, James Alexander, Henry Jesson, and Jim Grimes. Mrs. Beachamp was waiting to greet us and start us in our first year of education. We were assured by everyone how easy those twelve years of school were going to be, but it seems that we found it just the other way around. As the years of grade school went along we dropped some students and gained others. At the end of eight long years ten eighth graders gathered at the High School gym for Graduation, where they received their hard earned diplomas and were ready to start four years of High School. The year of 1949 saw twenty four green and apprehensive Freshmen enter High School. We were: Mary Ann Sturtz, Arlys Engdahl, Marilyn Hayhurst, May June Anderson, Ardiena Curtis, Carol Curtis, Darlene Curtis, Ardella Ady, Helen Watson, Barbara Bauman, Dollie Williams, Edwin Trumbo, Larry Engdahl, Rich- ard Leuschen, Fred Brown, Joe Twitchell, Allen Barnes, James Barnes, James Alexander, Charles Wilson, Allan Ronning, David Gibbs, Dennis Ware, and Glen Jepson. We elected Dennis Ware president; Richard Leuschen, Vice-pres.; Charles Wilson, sec. and Student Council Representatives were Barbara Bauman and Allan Ronning. In our Sophomore year we gained one student, Selma Swanson, and lost two, Glen Jepson and Dennis Ware. Charles Wilson was president, Richard Leuschen Vice-pres., Arlys Engdahl, secretary, Allan Ronning and Barbara Bauman Stu- dent Council Representatives. Our Junior year was a duplicate of the previous year except for gaining one student Clara Stanton and then losing both her and May June Anderson. That year we put on the Junior Play The Scarlet Shadow and sponsored the Junior- Senior Prom which had a Netherlands theme. We also had a bake sale which was quite successful. Charles Wilson was again elected president, Selma Swan- son, Vice-president, Marilyn Hayhurst, secretary, Arlys Engdahl and Jim Barnes were Student Council Representatives. In our Senior year we elected Jim Barnes president, Richard Leuschen, Vice- president, Art Gallinger, secretary, Marilyn Hayhurst and Charles Pangburn were Student Council Representatives. Art Gallinger was elected editor of the Remuda, Selma Swanson, assis't editor with Raymond Clauson, Mary Ann Sturtz, Darlene Curtis, and Allen Barnes filling the other important posts of the publishing of this Remuda. We initiated the Freshmen for a week and had a party in which they became full-fledged members of high school. Our play was a three act comedy Green Grow the Onions which was dir- ected by Mr. Schnebly. We also took part in a Students' Amateur Show which was held this year. Of the twenty-one students who started in the first grade only Mary Ann Sturtz, Richard Leuschen, and James Alexander have received all their education here in Jordan. Thus, perhaps twelve of the most important years of our lives have ended. ---Helen Watson and Carol Curtis 14 RODGER FELLMAN President LEVERNE HELLYER Vice-Pres. BILL WINFIELD Sec.-Treas.
