SIHSI1 XH GARFIELD COUNTY HIGH JORDAN, MONTANA 1951 We wish to present this an- nual to the students, faculty, business people, and to all who made this annual possible. We hope that throughout these pages you may capture the many activities, events, and traditions that occurred in the year 50-51. SENIOR CUSS 51' Because of his high ideals for the better things in life; because of his efforts to pass these ideals on to our students, his efforts in improving the school and reviving our school spirit, and because we appreciate what he has done for us, we dedicate the 1951 REUUDA to Ur. G. E. Cox Superintendent, Garfield County High School 3 Norma Hoverson, Velma Hart, Bronson LaMoure, Carol Brooks, Mary Alexander, Gale Fogle, Miss Mary Hoose, Don Bauman, Merle Spears. Editor Assistant Editor Advertising Managers Senior Writer Activity Writer Bronson LaMoure ir« Norma Hoverson 4 In these days of unrest in the world at large, there may be a growing tendency on the part of young people to be- come imbued with the same unrest and possibly a feeling of hopelessness or frustration as they see that their immediate futures may be greatly afiected by the rapidly changing con- ditions of preparation for the defense of our country. The same spirit of industry, co-operation, and careful analysis of present problems, which you have all shown to such a great extent in your school affairs, will surely serve to carry you through any and all vicissitudes in your future. Aim for a definite goal and strive continually to attain that goal in spite of any temporary obstacles and your success will be assured. You may be certain that my best wishes for a happy and secure life will follow you all in your several endeavors in the caning years. 5 ADMINISTRATION Gem Cox—Social Science Mary Hoose—Commercial Frank Gliko—English 6 Robert Singer—Music BACK aO(V: Clifford Spr cklin, Dan Bevis, Howard Ady, Edwin Trumbo, Allen Barnes, Joe Twitchell, Phil Edsall, Jim Barnes, Larry Harbaugn, Jack Hill; MIDDLE ROW: Hike Petitt, Johnny Trumbo, Betty Svenson, Sarah Boughton, Dorothy Spracklin, Ardella Ady, Ethel Lane, June Anderson, Phylis Mury, Ethel Lambert, Betty Mury, Lester Lane, Dale Dreider, Mr. Bud Bowlin,Janitor; FRONT ROW: Cynthia Saylor, Hazel Mack, Mildred Stanton, Arlys Engdahl, Virginia Hays, Mrs. Bud Bowlin, Mrs. J. FRONT ROW': Irma Sturtz, Mary Alexander, John Dee Davenport, Lenore Sturtz, Jack Woods, Justin Mart, Carol Brooks, Velma Mart. Way back in the year 1939, we, as a group of seventeen light-hearted youngsters, trudged merrily to our first day of school. Miss Bailey, our first grade teacher, met us at the door and assured each and everyone of us that the twelve years of labor to follow would be a snap. Little did we realize how wrong Miss Bailey would be. 16 continued on next page Sen i or Class - Jlisloru con't ' . ° J onem,jr-iwo eigntn graders, feeling quite wise and important, received their welcome diplomas. . thirt7 eight eager and quite green students entered high school. After initiation, which we had dreaded for a good many years, we took our place in high school. When we were Juniors we gave a Class Play and a prom for the Seniors. We also sponsored a masquerade ball. Durmg our Senior year we welcomed the Freshmen with initiation; presented a class play; gave a winter formal, and produced this annual. Out of the thirty-eight students that started high sctool with our class, there are only twenty-four left to receive diplomas. ,is « 5 I • 1 I « . _ . !! - A ■ ■ ______________ BACK ROW: Hazel Clauson, Irma Sturtz, Willis Stone, Earl Clark, Don Bauman, Frank Watson, Bronson LaMoure, Gus Schmidt, Cecil Weeding, Gale Fogle, Howard Ady, Rose Marie Nordahl, Mary Alexander. To the Juniors: Realizing that we have placed a heavy responsibility upon their shoulders, we leave our positions and dignity to them. To the Sophomores: We leave our talents, abilities, and numerous faults. To the Freshmen: We leave our patience and endurance. (It is a long wait kids.) I, Howard Ady, will my brown wavy hair to Mike Petitt. I hope that by the time he is a Senior his hair will also be wavy. I, Mary Alexander, will my ambition to Helen Watson, who really needs some. I will my gray hairs collected by being editor of the Sagebrush Saga and the Annual to Phylis Mury, who now has my job. I, Don Bauman, will my experience and ways with the women to Charlie Pangburn, who will soon need some advice on the ways of the world. I, Audrey Bowen, will my typing ability to Gilbert Wallace, who probably will want to make a career of typing. I, Carol Brooks, leave my red hair and freckles to anyone who can live with them as long as I have (take it from me, they'll add some spice to your life). I also leave my ability to have a good time to the Freshmen girls, hoping that they have as much fun in high school as I did. I, Hazel Clauson, will my silly little giggle and insane per- sonality to Mary Olson, hoping that she will put them to work at oncet I, Earl Clark, will my teek (car) to the Junior Class, as I know they will need it for the many errands they have to run when they become Seniors. I, Gale Fogle, will my little feet to Jim Barnes although it looks as if it's a little too late to help him much. I, Norma Hoverson, will my crossword puzzle books to Jack Brooks. I hope that it will improve his vocabulary as well as give him something to do. 18 I, Norma Kreider, will my everlasting chawin' gum , to Sarah Boughton, who usually has more than her share. I, Ethel Lambert, will my cunning and sly tricks of getting out of study hall to Betty Mury, who is taking lessons from me now. I, Buster LaMoure, leave my uncombed hair to Roger Fellman, and my ability to play hooky without an excuse to Vern McKinney, who has a little ability himself. I, Margie Murnion, leave my ability to leave school at the semester and still graduate to anyone who thinks they can replace me. I, Jessie Nordahl, will my slenderness to John McKerlick, and my knack of being tardy to anyone who gets up as late as I da. I, Rose Marie Nordahl, will my sweet disposition and dimpled smile to Betty Lou Brown, who could use a few smiles. I, Gust Schmidt, will my love for the wanen, and my invariable chasing of them to James Alexander, who I hope can run faster than I. I, Merle Spears, will my many clothes to Barbara Bauman who has quite a collection already. I, Mildred Stanton, will my job in the library to Duck Spracklin. He should enjoy that as he spends most of his time either in the library or at the window. I, Willis Stone, will nothing. It will take all I've got and a little more for Irma and I to exist. I, Irma Sturtz, leave my love for going steady during my high school years to Alta Hellyer, hoping that she won't break anymore young men's hearts. I, Lenore Sturtz, will my Tuesday morning from school to Mildred Bozarth, who usually takes any morning from school she wants. (This may regulate some of the afternoons off too.) I, Frank Watson, leave my carved up desks, and ny untouched books to anyone who can get by without using them as I have done. I, Cecil Weeding, leave my bright wise cracks to John Dee Davenport, hoping he will improve some of his. I, Velma Mart, will ray wishes to have things done my way to Sally Farrand, in hopes that she will have better results than I did. So ends the last will and testament of the class of 51 . 19 -by Velma Mart Just for chuckles, let's imagine ourselves in the future—cbout 1961. Let's see—yes, that's the date we set for the class of 51 reunion. Our old class president, Don Bauman, sent reminders to all the members of the class to attend the reunion at G.C.H.S. As the members of the class gathered on the specified day, many could not be recognized as old classmates. First of all there was a rough and wooly cowboy, who turned out to be Gale Fogle, better known as Wild-Eyed- Willie back in high school. He informs us that he just blew in from Texas with CalAmity Jane. We found out later that Calamity was Ethel Lambert. They own a horse ranch on the Panhandle, a partnership deal. A few minutes after we had gathered, Buster LaMoure, a former classmate, rushed in. He had just been out on a rushed business call. You know, of course, that Buster is the undertaker at the local mortuary, Bush's Lively Inn. Mary Alexander, his assistant, drives the hearse. She makes a daily tour of the city picking up customers. After we had all assembled, Don Bauman, the master of ceremonies, called the convention to order and made a few announcements. He informed us that many former classmates would not be able to attend. Willie and Irma Stone had written from Nome, Alaska that they were too busy raising strawberries to be bothered with the outside world. Hazel Vanderbilt (formerly Cl uson) phoned from London the morning of the reunion. She informed Don that she and her millionaire husband had been invited by the King and Queen of England to spend the week-end with them at Bucking- ham Palace. Earl Clark also had replied that he couldn't possibly make it (with regrets of course) because he was to be the star in LIGM's picture of the year, Don Juan of the Blackfoot Country. Gust Schmidt and Rose Marie Nordahl were late to the meeting because they had stopped at the courthouse on the way down and were married. So naturally, we found out very little about their past ten years. They were terribly busy smooch- ing all the time. 20 Continued on next page Howard Ady and his wife, Jessie Nordahl Ady performed a tumbling, juggling, and acrobatic act. Seven of their nine- teen children also starred in the act. They are featured in the Barnum-Bailey Circus. At this point on the program Lenore Sturtz, Merle Spears, and Margie Murnion sang a blues song. They present a daily radio program on CBS; The program is entitled Pine and Whine with the Boo Hoo Lulu Sisters. Audrey Bowen, the Company President of the beer that mace Milwaukee famous, gave a long speech on Beer and why more people should drink it. Margaret Truman, Audrey's secretary, accompanied her to the reunion. Margaret took notes on Audrey's speech for the Washington Time. Cecil ..eeding, the Cattle King of Montana, and his partner, Mildred Stanton, entertained our group with cattle calls. Everyone enjoyed the exhibitions to the fullest extent. The former Carol Brooks who owns a flea circus in India brought samples of her finest specimens. She had her assist- ant, Frank i.atson, distribute the fleas among the audience. Soon all the people started scratching. A prize was awarded for Oscar when he was found. He was Carol's pet. Forma Hoverson and Norma Kreider announced that they were recently appointed to the school board. They were con- fronted with many problems, but due to their past experiences they feel that they have solved them in complete sympathy with everyone concerned. At this time the meeting was adjourned. W'e bade each other farewell anc went on our merry way. As we drove out of town we noticed Don Bauman standing on the corner of Main street with a sign Contribute to the blind.
