This year ' s Homecom- ing theme was If This World Were Mine. The 1982 Homecoming king and queen were Lalo Villegas and Sandra Sandoval. The game was against Diamond Bar at Mount San Antonio College. During the halftime, the princesses were presented to Carey fans, and the queen was crowned. With thousands of eyes upon her, the queen smiled with happiness. This year has been the most exciting year for me here at Garey. I have watched Garey change and grow. And I must say that I am proud to see it happen. I would like to thank the entire faculty and administration for all of their support. I would like to tell my mother thanks for all her cooperation. Love you, Mom. I hope that the next A.S.B. president of Garey High will enjoy the excitement that comes with the job as much as I did. This farewell brings an end to a very special part of my life that I will never forget. It has been a great honor to serve as A.S.B. president of Garey High School. Always, Rosaloyn Jenkins A.S.B. The fact that they tied with Fontana at their first game of the year and lost all their pre-league games didn ' t bother the Vikings one bit. They were determined to go all the way, and that ' s just what they did. The Vikings literally stole all the Hacienda League champs with their perfect 7-0 record. But the Vikes didn ' t stop there. With a lot of hard work, determination, and a tremendous amount of support from the coaches, fans, and parents, the mean machine went on to win all of their CIF League games what they pushed for all year, a crack at the CIF Southeastern Conference Championship. The Vikings were up against Rosemead, a really tough team, but, as always, they came through and proved themselves by tying Rosemead with a final score of 19-19. The Garey High Vikings are the CIF Southeastern Conference co- champs. It took practice, skill, team work, and perfec- tion to get there, but the Vikings have it all. ' GAREY CO-CHAMPIONS IN A 1 WE ' RE NUMBER ONE I HEARTBREAKING TIE GAME! In a hotly contested call, the referee ruled the field goal kick by Humberto Macias was too high to see, ending the CIF Finals in a tie of 19-19 between the Garey Vikings and the Rosemead Panthers. Garey and Rosemead thus became the co-champions of the CIF Southern Conference. In the Rosemead game, Garey was losing, 19-13, at the end of the first half. Darryl Harris broke out for a touchdown in the second half, tying the score 19-19. At this point, the victory-hungry Garey fans moaned loudly when the referee ruled against an extra point for the Vikings. Thus ended Carey ' s battle to be the CIF champions. The opening play-off game of the CIF Finals was played against the Royal Oak Romans. Royal Oak, like everyone else could not stop Darryl Harris or the mighty Vikes. The Vikings came out winning 15-12. The next playoff game was against the Victorville Jackrabbits. It was another impressiv e win for the Hacienda League Champions. They scored in all four quarters, and Darryl Harris went over the 2,000 yard mark for the season. Fullback Tyrone Yarbrough contributed 70 yards on 11 carries. Quarterback Jeff Davis completed 5 of 13 passes for 52 yards. Jeff Todd scored a 17-yard run also. The game ended with another win for the Mean Machine of 37-21. Darryl Harris ' four touchdowns and an excellent defense led the Vikings to an easy 35-11 win over the Cajon Cowboys in the semi finals. This enabled them to play for the CIF championship. 1982-1983 SPIRIT LEADERS i i DENA MOLLES .....i i CAROLINE OROSCO SYLVIA NEWBORN WE ' RE NUMBER ONE CUZ ANNABELL HERNANDEZ ANN TUITAU ' m RACHEL BALLON ' w. When asked about the differences between Garey High and schools in France, she answered that there was no comparison be- tween them. She went to a Catholic school in France. There was much discipline and there was more respect for the teachers. She also answered that the teaching methods were different, along with the attitudes of the students. In France, the students were more concerned with striving for goals and concentrated mainly on achieving these goals. Also they were more dedicated. Seventy percent of the seniors were college-bound. When asked if Garey could be improved, she replied, Only if the students change their attitude and they understand that high school is only their beginning. She added that they are not going to school to please their parents or made teachers happy; it ' s only for their benefit. Sophie ' s future goals are to major in public relations and to travel much to experience other cultures. She wants to finish her studies in France when she returns home. We the class of 1983 are finally Seniors, leaving behind all our memories, histories, and good fortunes. We also had our first C.l.F. win in football. Now we are waiting for our graduation which is just a couple of months away. I am happy 1 was part of the publication of the Garey High School Saga yearbook. 1 hope this book brings back all :he happy memories everyone had this year at Garey. 1 have encountered many experiences on this year ' s Saga Staff. Many thanks to Mr. Fischbach (advisor), Wayne Moore Studio, Mr. Gibson, and assistant editors, Sylvia and Phan, and the entire 1983 yearbook staff. Good luck to the freshman class, sophomore class, junior class and also to the Senior Class of 1983. When you come to the end of your rope, make a knot, and hang on. Now I would like to leave all deadlines and after school work behind me, and to wish all students good luck. May all their dreams be fulfilled and their ventures be successful.
