I il You Can't Take It With You For this year's fall play, Mrs. Barisemeyefs drama group pre- sented the Kaufman and Hart production You Can't Take It With You , The play, written in the late 19303, deals with a family of people happily detached from reality. This family consists of a tax-evading, tomatojuggling ratvcatching grandfae ther, his daughter Penny, selfestyled painter ond playwright, Paul, husband of Penny and malser of fireworlss Cassisted by Mr. Depinna the icemanb, Ed and Essie who respectively play the xylophone and dance, and Alice, the daughter of Paul and Penny and the one normal member of the family, During the course of the Pulitzer Prize winning production, the Vanderhof-Sycamores are confronted with a Russian dance instructor named Kolenlshof, an irate tax collectorg the snooty patents of Alice's beau Tony, Donald, the maid Rheba's boy- friendg several Gemeng a drunk and disorderly actress, and the Grand Duchess Olga Katrina. ln the end, the main confrontation is between Grandpa Van' derhof and Tony's father, Anthony Kirby, Sr. Grandpa argues that Mr. Kirby is not relaxed enough, that he wastes too much time doing things he doesn't want to do. Though Kirby de- bates with great farce, Grandpa's basic common sense over- comes him in the end, and he is liberated even as he is defeated. The moral af the play? Relax and enjoy-you con't raise it with you.
