BILL ELDRIDGE, RAY ANDRZEWESKI GABRIEL RODRIGUEZ AURELIO CORONADO TROY THOMAS, GUY RYAN, JERRY SHEPARD, ROB THOMPSON, DANIEL ARAMBULA COACH RIZZI AND COACH WIESE BOTTOM L TO R COACH ESTRADA, RUBEN RODRIGUEZ, MIKE CASTILLO, RICKY MURILLO, SHAN TUNNER RUBEN PARADA JIMMY HENDICKS Baseballers are The 1979 Carey High Varsity Baseball team is one that is capable of winning an S.A.L. title. Sound familiar? Although many of the power hittersfrom last year are gone, this year's team is going to do it with singles, doubles, and a whole lot of hustle. Many of last yeafs starters are missing, but they will be replaced by young, determined, and talented sophomores and juniors. Shane Turner and johnny Rodriquez figure to play im- portant parts in. the team's success this year. Ruben Rodriguez, who moved at the end of the last school year, will be replaced by Shane Turner, a sophomore. johnny Rod as he is known by his teammates and coaches is a junior with a strong arm for a pitcher of his size. He throws hard and was voted as the l.V.'s Most Valuable Player last year. When Coach Estrada was asked if he thought the team would take the S.A.L. title this year, he replied, l don't know, we might. We are going to be young, but High and In our attitude is better than last year. Asked who will give the team the most competition, he answered, UpIand, Damien, and Alta Loma. They have a lot of good players. When commenting on the hitting, Coach Estrada said that the team was going to have to work for its runs. He also added, We're going to do a lot of bunting and running. As long as we're aggressive, we'll be all right. Coach Estrada also commented about his number one pitcher, Aurelio Coronado, as being the best in the league. Our pitching will be stronger than last year! Also returning from last year's pitching staff are Bill Eldridge and Ray Andrzeiewski, and with the addition of johnny Rod, the baseball team will have a strong starting four. Last year's team missed the C.l.F. Play-off by a single game. This year they will be satisfied with nothing less than a first place finish atop the S.A.L. standings.
