EXCEPT FOR VICTORIES OVER THE RED DEVILS AND CA VALIERS. . Except for victories over the Pomona Red Devils and the Montclair Cavaliers, Garey's 1979 football season was not very successful mea- sured by the win-loss record. The Vikings suffered from inexperience and injuries. Most of the team WN' were underclassmen, including many freshmen. Thse novices will make the 1979 Vikings hard to beat. A The fans felt encouraged by the team's enthusiasm, confidence, and how they handled themselves whether they were winning or losing. Both the fans and the players exemplified Garey's long record of good sportsmanship. W All coaches should be commended for how well they taught the Vikings to play as a team and not as each man for himself. Instead of the players saying to a team member how dumb a mistake was, they would say, Hey don't drop your hed when we get in there. We'll show them not to mess with the best. The coaches were very tense throughout each game. The defensive coaches wondered what kind of plays the other team might run. They paced up and down the field asking themselves, ls it going to be a 32- drive, a 32-straight, an 87-end around, a draw play, or even a quarter- back keeper. At the same time, the offensive coach was wondering what plays he should run. All these numbers may sound strange but that's the game of football!
