ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT SAID OFTEN ENOUGH, GAREY HIGH SCHOOL TURNS OUT MORE PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES THAN ANY OTHER HIGH SCHOOL IN THE VALLEY. Pomona, Caliiomia I.. Thursday, October 5, 1978 Greg Ballard . Dear Editor: I was recently in Israel and had the very pleasant oppor- tunity to see and briefly speak with a former student of mine, Greg Ballard. Greg, from Garey High School and now a profes- sional. basketball player with the World champion Washington Bullets, was in Israel to play an eichibition game with Macabee, the national basketball team of that country. 'I It has been gratifying for me as Fm sure for many others to follow Greg's successful careerg and to see his picture in the inter- national Jerusalem Post shaking the hand of Israe1's President, Yitzhak Navon, was most ex- citing. 1 I Over the years in education and social service, I've met and worked with many young people. I've witnessed many youth striv- ing with the goal to become professional athletes. Very few have and those who have done so have exhibited qualities far beyond physical prowess. Cer- tainly this has been the case with Greg Ballard. ' Greg's achievements, I'rn sure, are not only due to his great physical abilities but as much to the strength of character he pos- sesses, his fair-mindedness, his intelligence, decency, and un- selfishness. It wasn't so long ago that I was in the classroom with 'Greg and remember many of these qualities displayed in his actions. He was a most enjoyable student to work with. For those of us who know or know of Greg Ballard, I'm sure we share a most positive feeling about his accomplishments. My hat is off to this fine individual. For those young people who are aspiring to follow in Greg's footsteps, remember, it takes a heck of a lot more to get where he is than just bouncing a ball or making a basket. Laurence N.
