Phillip Lovin Elliott Prcsidci f Dear Fellow Students: This is the time ot parting, but this little book. The Anchoh, will be a magic key with which you may unlock the doors of yesterday and go back to li ' e again many of the experiences of today. At our parting I should like to place in your hand a little token— a kind of allegory of all that is essential in all the prog- ress of our going. It is contained in a little device used again and again by the poets- a little physical picture with a spiritual counterpart. Perhaps you would call it a pictiu ' c with overtones. It may be that the sum of all pain or happiness is only what ONE is cap- able of experiencing. It could be that the minutest particle of matter is a minia- ture solar system. It could likewise be that when we find the central basic trutli of life we have potentially all there is to have. Her the token: A noiseless patient spider, I mark ' d where on a little promontory it stood isolated, Mark ' d how to explore ihe acant vast surrounding. It launch d fortli filament, filament, filament, out of itself. Ever unreeling them, ever tirelessly speeding them. And ou, O m ' soul, where you stand. Surrounded, detached, in measureless oceans of space. Ceaselessly musing, enturing, throwing, seeking the spheres to connect them. Till the bridge you will need be form ' d till the ductile anchor hold. Till the gossamer thread yon fling catch somewhere, O my soul 12 m. .-LA ' .v ■ ■- ' iBX- --;-v:t
