THE PRESIDENT Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive But to be young was very Heaven! Today I have thumbed through my high school and college annuals. They are a magic link in the chain of memory to bring back the days and friends of yesteryear. This book will be just that to you; and in addition it will be an index finger pointing to another and richer day. May it always bring pleasant memories, and not regrets, to you. Eager, expectant and filled with desire to make these college days at Gardner- Webb happy and success- ful in their college career. With anxiety they have awaited the day when they would walk through the arch, maybe for the last time, to receive their sheepskin and then to make their way forward — some to other colleges, others to work in different pro- fessions. But yet as they glance backward over these short years their thoughts wander over the many new friends they have made. The struggle and finally the reward to know they have fought a good fight and have been victorious. ime or Some un ' Wi.--: .. ' 79 80 no 3ootUii 1949 The Gardner-Webb football team of ' 49 did not make or break any world records, but they fought hard in victory and defeat. The win and loss column showed a victory tag on 3 games while the loss list shows 5 losses and 1 tie. This record, as we said, is not out- standing, but the spirit and sportsmanship of these Bulldogs of ' 49 will stand out as a challange to teams of future Bulldogs. It is not possible to pick out one man and put him on a pedistal as the best player on the squad. Bob Humphrey was selected by his team- mates as the most valuable placer, and their choice was a wise one, but there were others who stood out during the year. One man is not a team; so we ' ll tr ' to give you a little inside information of these Bulldogs of ' 49. Bob Humphrey — 180 pound All-Srate end from Shelby, North Carolina, is called Sterling by those who know him. He should be a gangster because he has always had trouble with Commercial Law. Wonderful driver?? Wayne Br. dburx Coach Bob Neil — Big 210 pound tackle from Kings Mountain was co-captain of the team. He could always be depended on to question actions of the referees. John Arndt — 165 pound halfback from Mt. Holly, North Carolina, made All-State and could really lug the leather. John was al- ways the guinea pig in psychology class. Max Fish — 170 pound halfback from Gastonia, North Carolina, was one of the fastest Bull- dogs, but he has one weakness — women!! HUMPHREY XEIL ARNDT FISH Revis Frye Coach H. L. Buddy Gantt — 175 pound halfback was high scorer for the year. Buddy, who is from Lancaster, South CaroHna, has a great collection of souvenirs to show for his many trips this year. Frank Arnette — Center, is also from Lancaster, South Carolina, and could be depended on to stop all opponents that came his way. He also owns half interest in Gantt ' s souvenir collection. Bill Cashion — big fullback, better known as Egghead, claims Kings Mountain, North Carolina as his stomping grounds. Egg could be seen warming up on a stone wall before the games. Walter Oakes — 190 pound tackle, develops into one of the better tackles on the team. Walt loved to hit that ball carrier on a kick-off. GANTT ARNETTE CASHION OAKES Bob Neil Co-Capfain John T. Red Painter from Gastonia, North CaroHna teamed up with Humphrey to form the best two defensive ends in the state. Red always forgot half of his gear — poor old Hoffman. Dwight Ware — another product of Kings Mountain. At his fullback spot, W are real- 1) ' tore a line to bits. Ware was called Gregory Peck because of his way with the women. Norris Pee Wee Jones was the third coach of the team. Pee Wee ' s favorite saying, I ' m read)- coach. T)Tee Kiser — 180 pound center from Bessemer City was the only man on the team who would take Coach ' s orders. P.S. — Tyree was the only married man on the squad — wonder if that has anything to do with it?? P.J|, INTER WARE JONES KISER 1 Ted Red Seal Guthrie is from Gaffney, South Carolina and was a whale of a guard on de- fense. Ted charms the girls with his croon- ing. Favorite past time was riding Sap Harmon. Gene Abercrombie, 160 pound guard from Shelby, North Carolina was outstanding on offensive blocking. Lee Roy Biggerstaff, 180 pound tackle from Charlotte, North Carolina was one of the tackles who saw action only in reserve sports — should be better next year. Jack Cannon, center from Shelby was good on offensive blocking. Willis and Moon Managers GUTHRIE ABERCROMBIE BIGGERSTAFF CANNON ■- Richard Bull Foster, a big 22 5 pound tackle from Kings Mountain showed great promise after overcoming injuries which held him back during early part of year. Walter Harmon, 145 pound flea back, was the trickest runner on team, could fake a man out of his shoes. Walt also comes from Kings Mountain. Bob Hoffman, 200 pound tackle from Gastonia, could always be seen with paper and pencil at the games. Was a supply room for Red Painter. James Hullender another of the Kings Moun- tain boys plaj ' ed a bang-up game at end. Also looked good with the gals. Buddy Medlin is a neighbor to Hullender hailing from good old Kings Mountain. Medlin played good ball all year. Favorite saying, I got my man. David Peeler, a 170 pound halfback from Morganton, North Carolina was a fast dependable man. Always had a good supply of comic books. Irvin Shook suffered a broken collar bone which limited his playing to first half of the sea- son. His sensational quick kicking saved the team several times. Robert Stegall, 185 pound guard from Gastonia could always be depended on for good all-round playing. Stegall always gripes about any and everything in sight. Leonard Keever, hurt during first few weeks of practice, did not play during the regular season but was there in spirit. STEG.ALL WHITTIXGTON TEAGL ' E WILLIAMS UZELL HARMON WALKER KEEVER fe«?f-.. FOSILR HARMON MEDLIN HOFFMAN SHOOK HULLENDER PEELER Edgar Punchy Teague hails from Fayetteville, North CaroHna, was always a good boy to have in at that guard slot. Scott Uzell, 180 pound guard from Black Moun- tain, North Carolina played good ball. Scott was great on defense, as a matter of fact he went good on de-bench also. Could always be heard saying Giggy. Richard Walker, quarter back hails from Shelby, North Carolina. He was a good field general. Dick was the quietest man on the squad — one among many. Jim Whittington from Salisbury, North Caro- lina was team ' s ace passer. Whit collected football helmets as a hobby. Bob Williams, 170 pound end from Morganton, North Carolina was really a pass snagger. However he had many outside interests — especially in Shelby. Bill Sap Harmon, the last one of the Kings Mountain boys. Bill played guard and was a good defense. You can guess why he was called Sap. Irvin Punk Willis, manager from Ridgecrest, North Carolina. Punk was great on taping ankles and carrying water. He ' s good on the basketball court too. James Hook Moon, manager from Franklin- ville. North Carolina. — Don ' t ask where it is. Favorite saying was shut up Hoff- man. Good Government student — ex- cellent ear banger. Well, this was your team of 1949. What do you think of them? These were a fine bunch of boys, and Gardner- Webb should be proud to point to them and say, They play for G.-W. According to all indications, next year should be one of the geatest for the athletic de- partment of Gardner-Webb College. Only time will tell; so we ' ll wait. ( ashetball The basketball season at Gardner-Webb was a big success. The Bulldogs finished second in the Western Division and fourth in the state. Journeying to the state tournament with a 11-5 record, the Bulldogs knocked off Wingate 5 1-31 in the first game. The Bulldogs went down before a great Campbell team 61-41 the second night.
