THFQ I THE ALILE M RICHARDS MEMORIAL LIBRARY The death of M1ss Allee M Rlehards who for twenty seven years had been at the head of the I:ngl1sh department at Gardlner H1 h School left a gap nex er to be fllled ID the IUIIICIS of those who were 1nsp1red by her presence Th1s feelmv urged fr1ends 111 Gardmer to perpetuate her memory These frlends met to talk the matter ox er and declded that a H1 fh School L1brary would be the most fittlng memorml A COIUITIIITCC was ehosen to work w1th the Supermtendent of Schools and the PTIDCI pal of the H1 h School and the present sehool l1brary IS the outgrowth of the movement Th1s l1brary w h1eh IS loe 1ted on the left hand slde at the extreme north end of the lower eorr1dor 15 one of the best sehool l1 brarles 111 the st 1te of Malne a11d eonta1ns numerous excellent books from fa1ry stor ICS to encycloped1as The l1brary 18 under the SLIPCTVISIOU of M1ss Marletta Parshley of the Gardlner H1gh Sehool f1eulty It IS open flxe per1 ods of the day and IIS seruce to the stu dents and faeulty 19 of the h1ghest effielency the routlne l'3LlIIg much l1ke that of our e1ty l1brar1es Many pL1p1lS XISII the l1brary eaeh day and a large number are often turned away beeause of lack of room tho11gh extra cha1rs and tables were 1nstalled at the be v1nn1nv of th1s school year These were the g1ft of Mr R P Hazzard and are greatly apprec1ated by both the students and the faculty Some students go to the l1brary to work and look 11p mater1al for the1r TCLIIHIIOHS wh1le others go to read for pleasure I e1ther case all attend str1ctly to the1r own readmg It IS very seldom a student has to be d1sm1ssed for bad behavlor Last year I8 887 students v1s1ted the l1brary and 2 750 books were borrowed The number of students LISIIILI the l1br1ry lb mcreaslng so rap1dly that xt has beeome ev1dent that somet1me there w1ll be a neees SIIY of mov1ng th1s department of the school l1fe to 'mother part of the blllldlflg where there IS sufflelent room to aeeommodate all The Alxee M R1chards IVl6!1lOI'18l L1brary has grown to mean so mueh to all students that 1f If were suddenly taken away, lf lb hard to real1ze what the1r reactlon would be Surely every student would COI1S1dCI' a xery xaluable part of G'1rd1ner H1gh School lost to h1m ThIS would be true for there IS no doubt that there would be a great loss of educatxon not to ment1on pleasure Ex ery book IH the l1brary w1ll teach SOl'116flI1I'1g to the student who IS eager to learn Some e1t1zens w1sh they eould help stu dents h11t th1nk that beca11se they are not wealthy they can not do anyth1ng worth Let us LOIXSICICI' the matter of IHag3Zll'1CS for IHSEHDCG In DTCVIOLIS years the students have had access to s1xteen magazlnes Among them are the Amer1can, Atlant1c Monthly Forum, Current H1story Harper s Nanonal Geograph1c, Saturday Evenmg Post SLICDIII'-1C Amenean Popular Sclenee AIXICYICHII Cookery, Good HOLlSCkCCp1I1g The future classes however, Wlll be de pr1ved of th1s add1t1onal 6dl1C21I1OH as lack of f11nds w1ll prevent further subscrlptlon to many of these magazlnes CIEIZCDS who regularly rece1ve magazrnes that they do not w1sh to keep on file would be do1ng a great serv1ee to the students of Gardmer H1gh School 1f they would pass these magazlnes on to MISS Parshley or Mr Woodman to be used 1n the l1brary If the alumn1 and fr1ends of our school can gne support and a1d to the l1brary as MISS Rlchards gave her devot1on and en tl'1US1HSHI to the students of Gardmer H1gh School, there Wflll be no questlon as to the future welfare and growth of the Al1ce M Rlchards Memorlal L1brary Olga Booker, 33 10 , ll L L o , . .'
