I was very pleased to be asked to contribute a message for the Garden Valley Collegiate Institute Yearbook. May I begin by bringing to you the greetings of the Department of Education. To these may I add my own good wishes and sincere hopes for a pleasant and successful year. For some of you the end of this school year will mark the end of your Public School Education and the end of a way of life that you have known for many years. Much of your success in the future will depend upon how well you have learned many of the lessons of life at home, in school, and in your communities. In the past you have had your parents and teachers to guide you, to prod you when necessary, and to encourage you always, to achieve to the best of your ability. In the future you will have to depend upon your own sense of responsibility which you have developed over the years to keep you achieving and working at your apex of efficiency. You will be moving out into a world which is full of challenges and opportunities. If you are prepared to meet these challenges and seize these opportunities, you you will derive much pleasure and happiness and find your future to be a rewarding one. Best wishes to all. It gives me pleasure, on behalf of the Plum Coulee Council, to congratulate you, the 1969 Garden Valley Col¬ legiate graduating class. Even though you have reached an important milestone in your life, it is really only the commencement. In your education you have acquired a treasure, that, should you suffer shipwreck and lose everything else, you will never lose that treasure. You will find that in this complex and ever changing world, you most likely will have to change your plans, your ideas and your attitudes as time goes on. Do not change because something is new, or its different or just for the sake of change, but change if it is for the better, if you can improve yourself or if you can be of better service to your fellow men. You have so far lived a more or less sheltered life. Some of you will no doubt continue with your education, while others will join the labor force. When you will come out into the world you will meet problems and temptations that you are not aware of at present, and in some cases maybe ill prepared to meet. When those times come, remem¬ ber the lessons you learned in the Garden Galley Collegiate, and in your Christian homes. There has been no time in the history of mankind when the opportunities were so abundant, the challenges so great and the problems so complex and manyfold. It will take people that are industrious and not afraid to use these problems as stepping stones to reach their goal. So go out and take advantage of these opportunities, meet those challenges and overcome the problems with courage and confidence and you will find the reward most satisfying.
