He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Psalm 23 I was very pleased to be asked to contribute a message for the Garden Valley Collegiate Institute Yearbook. May I begin by bringing to you the greetings of the Department of Education. To these may I add my own good wishes and sincere hopes for a pleasant and successful year. For some of you the end of this school year will mark the end of your Public School Education and the end of a way of life that you have known for many years. Much of your success in the future will depend upon how well you have learned many of the lessons of life at home, in school, and in your communities. In the past you have had your parents and teachers to guide you, to prod you when necessary, and to encourage you always, to achieve to the best of your ability. In the future you will have to depend upon your own sense of responsibility which you have developed over the years to keep you achieving and working at your apex of efficiency. You will be moving out into a world which is full of challenges and opportunities. If you are prepared to meet these challenges and seize these opportunities, you you will derive much pleasure and happiness and find your future to be a rewarding one. Best wishes to all. Very Sincerely, R. L. McIntosh, Inspector of Schools. 3 It gives me pleasure, on behalf of the Plum Coulee Council, to congratulate you, the 1969 Garden Valley Col¬ legiate graduating class. Even though you have reached an important milestone in your life, it is really only the commencement. In your education you have acquired a treasure, that, should you suffer shipwreck and lose everything else, you will never lose that treasure. You will find that in this complex and ever changing world, you most likely will have to change your plans, your ideas and your attitudes as time goes on. Do not change because something is new, or its different or just for the sake of change, but change if it is for the better, if you can improve yourself or if you can be of better service to your fellow men. You have so far lived a more or less sheltered life. Some of you will no doubt continue with your education, while others will join the labor force. When you will come out into the world you will meet problems and temptations that you are not aware of at present, and in some cases maybe ill prepared to meet. When those times come, remem¬ ber the lessons you learned in the Garden Galley Collegiate, and in your Christian homes. There has been no time in the history of mankind when the opportunities were so abundant, the challenges so great and the problems so complex and manyfold. It will take people that are industrious and not afraid to use these problems as stepping stones to reach their goal. So go out and take advantage of these opportunities, meet those challenges and overcome the problems with courage and confidence and you will find the reward most satisfying. Our best wishes to each and everyone of you. The Plum Coulee Council per Jake Hooge, Mayor 4 TRUSTEES Left to right: Mr. G. Banman, Mr. J. D. Penner, Mr. P. D. Labun, (Chairman), Mr. J. H. Wiebe (Sec-Treasurer), Mr G G Siemens (Vice-Chairman), Mr. G. G. Elias. Daniel Webster says: “Knowledge does not comprise all which is contained in the large term of education. The feelings are to be disciplined, the passions are to be restrained; true and worthy motives are to be inspired, and profound religious feeling is to be instilled, and pure morality inculcated under all circumstances. All this is comprised in education.” There are many benefits to be derived from a good education. In this day and age when the emphasis is on material values, we would like to remind the whole student body, that the financial benefits are the least and lowest of the rich rewards of mental Culture. The whole being is enlarged and exalted; the scope of view is widened; the objects of interest are increased; the subjects of thoughts are multiplied; life is more filled with emotions; and man is raised in the scale of creation. It is our sincerest wish, that all our students and especially the graduates of our Collegiate may have received some directives which will aid them in being of service to their fellowman and thus also to our Creator. P. D. Labun Chairman 5 Each year about this time it would appear to me that we have just begun a new school year when in reality we are already in the very act of completing the year’s program and at the same time planning for next year’s work. We look back on the activities of 1968-69 and wonder how we will achieve all our goals by the end of June with so much of the work left to be done and so little time left to do it. But, then, we have learned to live in a world of change and at the same time we have learned to adjust with greater ease, each time we are faced with new and unfamiliar situations; therefore, 1 feel confident that we will reach our goals as set out for this year. In the Garden Valley Collegiate things have been happening in 1968-69 at a pace that has placed a great demand on students and teachers — and it would appear to me that most activities have been faced with sincerity and have as a result been quite successful. In the areas of sports, music, choir and drama to mention a few, we have experienced a number of highlights in the present year. We now look forward to achieving a high measure of success in our academic program; and 1 feel certain that this will be the case if students and staff continue to work with the spirit of co-operation and ambition that has generally prevailed during the past months. At this time I congratulate the editor and her staff for the production of this yearbook; it is the product of a fine effort. A special thanks to all students and faculty members for the many contributions that you have made to the total school program throughout the year. As we prepare for the close of this year I look forward with anticipation to “Award’s Night” and “Graduation”; I know that again this year, as last year, these occasions will in a special way give recognition to many deserving students. My sincerest wish for each individual student at this time is that you might receive the promotion for which you have worked and may each and everyone of you have a very pleasant holiday this coming summer. Valedictory Address Mr. Chairman, Honourable Guests, Fellow Graduates, Ladies and Gentlemen, “Here endeth; here beginneth . To us graduates, these words have a special significance tonight. For twelve years and more we have strived toward this goal — our graduation. We are very grateful to the school, board, the teachers, and our parents for their sincere and tireless efforts in helping us reach this milestone. It is only recently that we have begun to fully appreciate all that you have done for us. We would like to thank the citizens of our community and the members of our school board for making these excellent facilities available to us. Our thanks also go to aur teachers who were more than educators; who were living examples of fine Christian men and women. Above all, we wish to express our appreciation to our parents, who have encouraged and guided us that we might achieve this end. Since kindergarten, our lives have centered around school. It was here that we formed the interests and friendships which will affect us for the rest of our lives. The various extra-curricular activities such as sports, drama, aid choir, which our school has always promoted, have enriched our lives with a constructive form of recreation. But perhaps what has contributed most to our happiness here is the spirit of co-operation and comradeship which has always prevailed. But all good things must come to an end and our short stay in these halls of learning is no exception. These ceremonies formally terminate our days as carefree high school students and officially mar k the beginning of our lives as responsible young adults. However, now that we have reached the completion of our high school education, we realize how little we actually know about Life. Now is the time for us young fledglings to try our wings in the world. As we enter this world, ours will be the challenge to promote better relations between different races and to overcome the poverty and strife caused by prejudices. This will be no easy task, but if we conscientiously apply the basic principles and high morals which we have acquired here, success shall be ours. As in the words of the late Dr. Martin Luther King “We shall overcome . Let each of us here make this his personal pledge; to overcome the cruelty and Injustice so prevalent in our world today. In parting, fellow graduates, let us ask God “to grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, the courage to change the things we can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” — Thank you. — Gloria Krahn 10 UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE 210 BARRY DYCK Barry Is a tall blond from Burwalde. That time has come once again for me and so I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to each one of the students of our G.V.C.I., the members of my Student Council, and especially to the staff. To all the graduating students: I wish you all the best in years to come. To those who must spend more time here: May your earnest attempts prove successful. Though there have been disappointments and sad times during this past year, the many pleasant memories will cause it to linger in my mind for many years to come. Drama Committee Report This year of 1968-1969 has been a rather hectic one for the Drama Committee. Our one big production o| year, “The Pirates of Penzance”, turned out to be a smashing success, much to the relief of Mr. Hiebert.l Hiebert was director of this operetta and Mrs. T. Kehler worked with choreography. To mention all the people who helped with the operetta would take several pages, as we would have to met! the audiences as well. All in all, after the problems and headaches were cleared away, 1 think this year has been quite an enjoy one. Thank-you to all those involved with the operetta, and especially to my committee. Social Committee Report Our Collegiate has over five hundred students and it was a challenge for the Social Committee to plan so , for such a large number of people. i The Hallowe’en party, October 29, consisted of a program followed by a lunch. Many of the students addt 11 1 the evening by wearing very original and interesting costumes. December 13, after the Carol Service, a banquet was held at the Elementary School Auditorium. A cold 10 was served and the evening was “topped” by a short program. We followed what has become, it seems, an annual event and held a Spring Fling, March 20. A very enjov program was staged. A king and queen for our collegiate were again selected. It has been an enjoyable year and I would like to thank all for helping us, especially the “ever preseff ■ time of need” staff. The major event on the Music Committee calendar this ear was the operetta, which was performed on March 6, 7, and 8. We presented Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates [T Penzance”. Before Christmas the orchestra played at one of the literary programs. The Senior Choir sang in the Grace ' hurch on a Sunday morning. They also sang at the Graduation Exercises. The Junior Choir was in charge of iresenting the annual Carol Service. They were assisted at the performance by the Senior Choir and the orchestra, jo The orchestra gave an afternoon concert in Carman on Thursday, February 13. Their students gave a tremendous eception. Events in the planning stages at this time include a Choir Festival in Winkler on April 26 together with Altona p.nd Gretna. The orchestra and choir intend to give a concert at CMBC i n Winnipeg. The Spring Concert is cheduled for May 9. The orchestra plans several concerts since their Easter tour was cancelled. Seven members of the orchestra attended the Brandon Music Workshop which was held on February 21 and 22. Lecognition should also be given to Doug Kuhl and Jim Wiebe. Doug played with the National Youth Orchestra his summer and Jim toured Europe with a band from the Peace Gardens Music Camp. ' As one can see, musically speaking this has been a busy year. There have been more invitations than we could iccept. Most certainly, it has been an enjoyable year for all who participated in the music program. Sports Committee Report The extra-curricular sports began once again this year with a vigorous soccer programme. Our boys’ first game. Sept. 12, started a winning streak which ended five weeks and thirteen games later when they fell to defeat against Daniel Mac. in the provincial finals in Brandon. Girls’ volleyball practise got under way. Although being a fairly new team, the girls should be proud of the progress they made during the season. The boys’ volleyball team was organized somewhat later. They didn’t do as well as our team did in former years, but one must also take into consideration the fact that many of them took part in the soccer activities, while others have chosen to spend their time in developing a strong basketball team, instead. Both the teams lost out in the Zone 4 semi-finals. Our junior volleyball met Gretna for one set of games, and came out victorious! Basketball practise began shortly afterward. As usual, our boys were fantastic and won the Western Division and Zone 4 trophies, without a defeat. Glenn Wiebe claimed another first when he won the Most Valuable Player trophy. This year, for the first time a high school hockey schedule was drawn ud. Highlights of the season consisted of a trip to and a return game with Devil’s Lake. They lost to Miami in the Zone 4 finals. An after four curling schedule was drawn up. As well as sending 4 boys to the School-Boys’ Bonspiel in Winnipeg, we did well in our own two tournaments and the others held in the Zone. G.V.C.I. also had representatives at the Zone 4 badminton and ping-pong tournaments.
