Throughout the year you have helped to re- create anew bond of fellowship among our class- mates and teachers. Your interest in our sports program, activities, and school life in general has been a challenge to other students, and has aided in the strengthening of school spirit. The manner in which you adopted our customs and school traditions has been much admired by everyone. We thank you for your thoughtfulness, interest, and Italian charm which added so many enjoyable moments during the past year. The Spartanus staff hopes that this yearbook will give you many pleasant memories of your school year with us. We would like you- to accept this as our thanks for the many things you have done for our school, especially for inspiring the theme of this publication, which you have dis- played, Fellowship Through Education . APPRECIATION We would like to express our sincere gratitude to you, Mr. Gamber, for the help you have rendered to us throughout our high school years, both as a teacher and senior advisor. You have given unselfishly of your time to help us with any problems which arose. Your warm personality and sense of humor made our assign- ments more enjoyable and a much easier task. Our many thanks go to you for being a person whom we could depend upon not only as a teacher, but as a true friend. 5 After a long day it's easy just to relax Once upon a time . . . This is the doorway where we it i ff 1 t Q 1 not FOREWORD As seniors there will be many things that we will remember about our years at Garden Spot High School, but the thing that will seem most prominent in our minds is the fellowship we have enjoyed throughout our education. It is the good times we have had working together that have helped to create the spirit of friendship which is so prevalent in our school. This re- lationship has been made possible not only by our students, but also by the teachers who have made this feeling so evident in the classroom, as well as through activities. Without fellowship, our education would be of less value to us, for it is this bond of understanding and cooperation that has prepared us to meet the demands of today's society. We hope to have captured in this yearbook the feeling of friendship as it existedin all phases of this school yearg that it may serve as a vivid remem- berance of our school life. fellowship begins : - K f Q i i i - , L H . One of the greatest needs in the world today is for understanding between nations. Fellowship is one of the main avenues to this end for it is common interests, feelings, and associations that leads to such under- standing. We must have fellowship among people before we can have understanding between nations. We, at Garden Spot High School, are indeed fortunate to have an opportunity through the foreign exchange program to contribute to fellowship and broaden the base for understanding. Mr. Donald A. Sheaffer 10 Principal ' 1 1 Robert P. Simon Supervising Principal Fellowship is the evolvement of oneself with others . . Fellowship is the satisfaction that an 1nd1v1dua1 receives from working with his associates It is the sharing of our disappointments and our glories, the giving of our time, effort and strength to further a Just cause. Fellowship is the evolvement of oneself with others who are working for the betterment of the group These characteristics when taken together produce happiness. 1 5 'Nx.. . -0-7 ff- . -. 1' 4 Mr. Richard C. SCHOOL BOARD Probably few students are aware of the vital role which the School Board has in the operation of our school. The entire board consists of five men repre- senting each of the six townships. These men are Earl D e i b l e r , Monroe Good, Arthur Stubbs, Howard Spotts, and Clayton Good elected from Brecknock Township, James Hay, William Troop, Pe r c y Welle r , Harvey Overly, and Charles Thomas delegated from Caernarvon Township, Eugene Burkholder, John Willwerth, Paul Swei- gart, Parke Dunlap, and Jacob Wise representing Earl Township 5 Ivan Witwer, William Eaby, Menno Eby, Roy Boley, and Theodore Sheaffer selected from East Earl Township, Alan Hunsicker, Albert Best, Dr. Louis Williams, Lester Schreiber, and Roy Hoober elected from New Holland Boro, R. S. Myers, R. D. Bucher, Jr., Roy Fritz, Michael Wenger, and Stanley Eckenroth delegated from Terre Hill Boro. These representatives . are elected by the citizens every other year in November for a six year term, taking office in December. This means that not more than two new men are elected at one time. The duties of this board of men are to establish all school policies and the responsibility of the maintenance and operation of this school. To do this efficiently, three committees are set up within the board. With each member of the board serving on one of them. The Education and Finance Committee is re- sponsible for securing all funds necessary to promote better education and to carry out all operations inthe school. To incur smooth oper- ation of all its duties, this group holds regular monthly meetings. The school building is maintained structurally by the Building and Maintenance Committee which meets only when especially necessary. As the name would imply, the Transportation Committee regulates the passage of students to and from school. They also map the bus routes and stops. K Together these committees work to produce an efficient school system that will enable the students to gain and to use much knowledge. Members of the Editorial Staff worked many hours in the actual production of the yearbook. Students on the Write-up, Layout, and Typing staffs found it necessary to work together in order to make this publication more enjoyable to you. For the first time this year the Spar- tanus editors had the privilege of attending the Columbia Press Yearbook Conference in New York. Many new ideas were obtained there which aided in the yearbook's production. ,I - Write-up staff proofreading the copy. QLIILL AND SCROLL Quill and Scroll is an international Honorary Society for high school journalists. The aim of this society is to encourage individual achieve- ment in journalism and associated fields. With Miss Witman as their advisor, members of the society met once a week to prepare articles for local newspapers. All major activities per- taining to our school were covered by the five students. In this manner, citizens of the com- munity were kept aware of the many items of interest within Garden Spot High School. To be eligible for membership a student must be a junior, or senior, who has done outstanding work in some phase of creative writing and must be recommended by the advisor of a school publi- cation. Members of both the TAT and SPART- ANUS are eligible. Recommendations must then be approved by the National Quill and Scroll so- ciety. Our Student Council is one of the activities that creates a better relationship between the student body and the faculty. Here students meet to discuss ideas, plan activities, and pass legis- lation in order to promote the welfare of our school. This year the Council sponsored the school play, Sagaof Sand City , as a benefit to sponsor an exchange student next year. This play also went to Pequea Valley High School as part of an exchange program. Inthe interest of school spirit, Student Coim- cil sponsored buses to basketball games. All sports awards and other awards earned during the year by students are purchased by Council. Dancing at lunchtime has been continued this year as has the school store. Many school dances have been successfully planned by our Student Council. Although the Junior High and Senior High School have separate Councils, they co-operate by working together on many projects. This was a busy year for the senior chorus led for two years by President and Student Conductor, Fred Priebe. In 1961, the chorus, inspired by twenty-four Seniors and directed by Miss Alice Jane Smith, performed the entire Christmas portion of Handel' s oratorio, THE MESSIAH. After selling much candy, the choruses finally earned enough money to purchase electric candles to use in the Carol Service. Another new feature of the Carol Service was the selection of an Honor Soloist to sing O Holy Night . Ten seniors tried out for this enviable position and the Honor Soloist was Paula McCoy. In addition to the annual Carol Service at school, the group also scheduled three church concerts, a recording date for WGSA, and a Christmas assembly. The last event of the Christmas season was probably the most relaxing and the most fun-carolling. After Christmas, another flurry of activity began. Tryouts for County, District, and Regional Choruses were held early in 1962 and Garden Spot was fortunate in having a generous representation in these groups. Trips to the Ice Capades and to several concerts gave the chorus members a chance to rest in between their own concerts and to enjoy the fellowship of their friends. The Spring Concert took the audience on a trip around the world, and featured the Barbershop Quartet, Girls Quartet, and Double Quartet. As in the past, Sandra Bair and Faye Eby did an excellent job of accompaning the chorus. The Concert Choir's final per- formance was on May 4 in the Community Music Festival.
