In reflecting briefly, we see many prob- lems still confronting us but we know, too, that only we can solve those problems. Next year we envelop ourselves with new surroundings but we know that the same traditions, desires, hopes, and achievements will still follow us to our new surroundings. Recorded within these pages for posterity are some of the very basic elements of our days at Garden Spot High School. Although no book can really capture the spirit and the ac- tivities of our students, we feel that we have attempted to meet that challenge in a realistic manner. LINDA I. With its main purpose of combining the efforts of the students and the administration by creatin a close cooperation between the two, the Garden Spot Student Council, advised by Miss Elizabeth Trox ell, is organized within the school to provide the students of the school with a governing body base on democratic principles. Three of the rnost outstanding activities sponsored by the council were the organization of the Alm Mater Contest, planning of a series of Bundle Days for underprivileged children, and the planning o a school handbook. To be included in the handbook is a Code of Conduct for bus students whic was also prepared by a student council committee. At the suggestion of the student council, the formation of a National Honor Society within th Garden Spot High School was considered and approved by the faculty. Arrangements made by th council also made it possible for students to travel by bus to two Friday night away basketball games Basketball jackets were purchased for the Iunior High Team and along with the senior classes the coun cil is helping to purchase new graduation caps and gowns for the school. The organization of th newly formed fencing club was also aided by the council when it purchased several masks and foil for the club. By this interest in other school functions the Garden Spot Student Council has been able to creat in the past, and will continue to in the future, a median between the student body and the faculty. Cooperating with the Senior High Student Council, the Iunior High Council, advised by Mr. Richard Sherr is the governing body of the junior high school students. Its aim is also trying to promote the general welfare oi the students and coordinate the activities of the school. Introduction of a Savings Stamp Program to the students of the junior high was their big- gest undertaking tor the year. The campaign, held every week, helped the students save to buy United States Savings Bonds. Collection for the March of Dimes was promoted by the junior high council as well as the Sir Valentine Contest sponsored by the Heart Haven. Both campaigns were promoted in the senior high in like manner. The student council also cooperated with the senior high council in sponsoring the buses which were taken to away basketball games, and in collecting cloth- ing during Bundle Days . Working with the Senior High Council, the junior members have chosen the outside pro- grams to be presented in the assemblies and have planned several combined and separate dances tor the students. The council is also responsible for the awards presented throughout the year. Though being in existence for only two years the junior high student council has made a large mark in the unification of school life. WEAVER'S FUNERAL HOME 53 WEST END CLEANERS WEINHOLD'S I.G.A.
