CCC 'mf' ' THE EAGLE 1 954 GARDEN COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL osHKosH, NEBRASKA THE VERNON VAILE CAMPBELL MEMORIAL SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD The Vernon Vaile Campbell Memorial Sportsmanship award was establi lished in 1953 to honor the memory of Vernon Campbell, ta graduate of the class of l952. Vernon was killed in a farm accident shortly after he was graduated. Vernon's friends and friends of the Campbell family voluntarily contributed money to establish a memorial at his church and at Garden County High School. These contributions which included contributions from the Campbell family made possible the beautiful trophy which will always remain at Garden County High School. Beginning in i953 and continuing for twenty years at commencement exercises, the trophy will be prominently displayed and a prescribed bronze sportsmanship charm will be awarded to a graduating senior by whose name will then be engraved on the trophy. The boy to receive this honor will be selected by the faculty committee whose duties include determining honor awards and they will base their iudgment on the following elements of sportsmanship to secure uniformity during the twenty years that the award is to be made. To receive the Vernon Vaile Campbell Memorial Sportsmanship Award, the Senior chosen must have met these qualifications: l. He must have been a member of, or have participated in at least one organized athletic endeavor at Garden County High School. 2. His general citizenship, must have been exemplary. 3. His real and demonstrated attitude toward officals, opponents, team- mates, training, and coaches must always have been of the very highest acceptability in regard to proper behavior on and off the playing field or court. 4. He must continually demonstrate exemplary gentlemanlike conduct and leadership. 5. His attitude towards winning and towards losing must demonstrate emotional and mental control. 6. 'His loyalty to and cooperation with team, -school, coaches and of- ficials must be outstanding. 7. He must play the game for the ioy of playing and never play for the plaudits and attention of the crowd. 8. He must be able to accept adverse decisions without becoming hurt but rather with a mature iudgment and realization that a situation may look or appear different through another person's eyes. 9. He must always perform to the best of his ability, but this implies his best performance and does not necessarly mean that he must be an outstanding performer in comparison with other athletes. Therefore in memory of Vernon Vaile Campbell and in keeping with the aforementioned attributes, we salute JAMES C. RUBINSON, winner of the award for the i952-1953 school year.
