TN-L Dr. Hood does many things in addition to serving as Superintendent of Schools. Here we see him meeting with Bob Jones, Student Council President, Tom Saffell, High School Principal, Ross Blackford, Rotary Club, Wayne Taylor, Boy Scout Executive, and Chief Geisler, to make plans for a Halloween party for the youth of Garden City. A and B Team cheerleaders, with sophomore football players, look on as Dr. Hood leads the student body in their ever-popular yell, Rock 'em, Sock 'em. Mr. Jellison Pays Tribute The dedication of the 1961 Buffalo to Dr. Hood is a fine tri- bute to the job he has done for education in Garden City for the last five years. His continuous concern for every facet of the school system has paid off in a first class educational exper- ience for the children and the youth of Garden City. Many things have contributed to his success. But one attribute stands above all of the rest as the key to his leadership. ltis his sincere concern and interest in the welfare and activities of those working with him. He adds the personal touch to educational ad- ministration through becoming acquainted with not only his teachers and administrators but also with their families. I am proud to have worked with him. My only regret is that this association was not for a longer period of time. Bill Jellison Mr. affell Pays Respect lt is indeed fitting that the 1960-1961 yearbook be dedicated to Dr. Leroy Hood. Ihave worked with Dr. Hood only a few months, but in those few months I have found that he is one of the top educators of the Mid-West. He has done a magnificent job with the schools of Garden City, and the patrons of the Community should be proud of his efforts and accomplishments. This com- munity takes a back seat to none in its educational program. Dedicahon During the past five years a great emphasis upon scholatic achievement has been evident in the Garden City Schoolsg the quality of the faculty has improved. The person who has had a very definite part in these changes which have made Garden City High School rank among the finest institutions of secondary education in the state is Dr. Leroy E. Hood. As a result of his leadersqhip and guidance, Garden City High School has achieved much of the prominence which it now as. Foundahon for EducaHon Without the Board of Education, the school would be as a tree without a trunk. lt would be unable to grow, to develop, and to improve in its purpose. This body, composed of loyal, in- terested parents, teachers, and citizens of the community is undoubtedly the bulwark of in- genuity in performing many tasks. Such an important branch of the school system must not be slightedg for within this body lies the complete functioning power of the school system. The students indeed owe great respect to a body so active in adhering to the aid and the support of Garden City High School.

A Day With The Good Doctor For nearly an hour he had been writing a constructive article about the junior high-junior college improvement bond issue. Someone had just entered his office and now stood in front of his large deskg he cleared his throat and said, Good morning, sir. Would you please sign this requisition? It was one of the coaches with a requisition for seven rolls of tape and one athletic protective mouthpiece. After signing the requisition, he made a note on the memo pad in front of him as a reminder that the elementary school principals expected him at the meeting that after- noon. Also, he must attend the Board of Education meeting that evening. His writing took some minutes more. When he had typed the bond issue article for the city paper, he made several telephone calls and left his office. He drove to Georgia Matthews Elementary School. This school was one of the two new grade schools that had been part of his work. The other school was Jones Elementary School which had been constructed after the separation of the junior college from the high school. He talked with the principal of the school, paused at several ofthe classrooms, and returned to his office in the high school building. A book salesman was waiting to speak with him. He talked with the salesman for approximately one-half hour. Next, the head maintenance man came into his office, and the doctor answered several of the man's questions. They were interrupted by a telephone call from an irate mother, Ivith whom he talked for several minutes. The maintenance man had one more inquiry and then eft. . He had lunch with the Rotary Club members and returned to his office. Before he should be at the principals' meeting, there was time to eliminate some of the never- ending correspondence which accompanied his work. Another telephone call interrupted his lettter writing. It was a request for him to speak at one of the grade school P.T.A. meetings. He made a notation on the calendar on his desk about the speaking engagement and finished the letter with which he was busy. He was called out of the principals' meeting later that afternoon. The interruption was a re- quest to borrow one of the school's route busses to bring a group of military men into town from the airport. He gave his consent and returned to the meeting. The principals had been in the midst of a discussion concerning the budget for the elementary school system. They resumed where they had been before the interruption. . When the principals' meeting terminated, the doctor returned to his office. He talked with a salesman of janitorial supplies, finished some paper work, and turned his auto toward home and the evening meal. After he had eaten supper, he relaxed for a short time. He spoke with his wife concerning their daughter who was a freshman at college. The sun had set as he returned to the school building to attend the meeting of the Board of Education. ...Ni 0-my Q' 'Q K .
