The year extended from May 24, I95O, +o November 2I, I95I. These dates were chosen because on May 24 the order celebrated the Golden Jubilee of the canonizafion of Saint John Baptist de La Salle. November 2I is 'the I60'rh anniver- sity of the occasion on which S+. La Salle and two of his Brothers vowed to live on bread and water rather than give up 'rhe worlr of the Christian education of the poor. Just prior to the opening of 'the La Sallian Year, May I5, l950, our Holy Father Pope Pius XII issued a le++er declaring S+. John Baptist de La Salle patron of all teachers of either sex, whether clerical or lay. Today, two hundred and 'Fifty years after the founding, the Brothers are carrying on +he work of teaching young men. Above: St. John Baptist de La Salle. Mont La Salle Students from Garces. BLOCK G With Susie Durham sounding the gavel, the Girls' Block G Society enjoyed its second year as an organization. During football season the Block G sponsored a rally which featured three typical Garces boys lSusie Durham, Lorraine Martini, and Sally Kraussel. Jointly with the G. A. A., two volleyball teams were sent to San Joaquin Memorial for a game. Although they were defeated the girls played a good game and showed fine sportsmanship. To prove to the Garces letter' men that they could play volleyball, the girls challenged the boys. The game was hard fought all the way and ended with a victory for the girls! ln May the Block G pins were awarded and names of new officers were announced at the second annual Block G banquet. It was held in the Redwood Room of the Bakersfield Inn. This ended the i950-51 season. left-Officers include: Sally Krausse, Sec., Susie Durham, Pres., Rosemary Meehan, V-Pres., Peggy O'Hare, Treas. 67 Susie welcomes members af banquet i X.
