Tennis Has Smashing Season The Garber Varsity Co-ed Tennis team achieved an 11-2 record. Terrific perfor- mances were continually turned in by the entire team. The team took first place in the County Invitational, beating out three class “A” schools and then went on to take se- cond place in the Flint Invitational. Outstanding players were Matt Sandler who reached semi-finals in the state tourna- ment and Mike Learman who was second in the state in class B. Coach Holcomb will have only boys to deal with in the spring of 1978 as the girls now have their own team. But we are certain that fine performances will continue to be turned in by people like Joel Blumeneau, Dewey Duchaine and Paul Drzyzga. 60 FIRST ROW, L to R: T. Ligney, S. Spaulding, R. Salman. Their schedule included six varsity teams, only two of which managed to beat them. The two remaining J.V. losses came at the hands of Saginaw Eisenhower. Number one doubles were led by Ellen Way and Craig VanSumeran, and Beth Vink and Jeff Gorth. Singles were led by Ken Jones, Guy Moulthrop and Gary Seymour. The 1978 J.V. Tennis squad will have to work hard to improve on this record. Duke Runners Win NBC Title The 1977 Duke Track Rats piled up an impressive 5-3 record last spring. Coach Rochow had every reason to be proud when his squad took first place honors at the N.B.C. Conference Meet. They also took second place in the County Meet with 56Vfe points. Record per- formances were turned in by Scott Ruterbusch in the High Jump; other fantastic performances were turned in by individuals like Milton Mackey, Terry Coburn, and Rob Henika. Coach Rochow has every reason to expect great things from the 1978 Duke Track Team. FIRST ROW, L to R: B. Deary, G. Gordon, M. VanTol, B. Estabrook, M VanderLooven, M Kozak, Coach Nesbitt. To State Meet The 1977 Girls Track under the dir- ection of new coach Ted Davenport managed to hit a 3-6 record last spring. There were, however, three bright spots other than the three vic- tories. Three Dukettes made it to the State Meet in Kalamazoo. They were Cathy Witte, Ann Martens, and Bcv Davenport. Cathy Witte ran in the 2 mile, Ann Martens was in the 220, and Bev Davenport in the 50 yard dash. Cathy, Ann, and Bev were all under- classmen and may be returning in 1978. The three of them along with the whole squad will have to work hard to surpass last year. The fans can hope they will do so. FRONT ROW: Coach Pfundt, G. Keenan, T. Trimble, S Weiler. SECOND ROW: M Spencer. B. Haga. D. Nix, M. Moquin, B Wicdyk. THIRD ROW: J Reed, T. Lcspcrance, D. Gansser, N. Badalamcnli. Good Season For Varsity Baseball Coach Pfundt led the Varsity Baseball team to a 12-8-1 re- cord in 1977. Behind the pitching of Marty Spencer, and the bat- ting of Scott Weiler and Tim Trimble, the Dukes swept double- headers from Franken- muth and Bullock Creek. They split with seven teams and dropped both games to only two teams. Coach Pfundt and the Dukes are looking forward to an even better season in 1978 with three All Conference players li- kely to return. FIRST ROW, L to R: Coach Hagcs, D. Dufort, S. Furtaw, R. He led them to a final record of 13-7 in his first season as coach. The little Dukes won or split every double-header except Saginaw Mac Arthur. Unfortunate- ly, Coach Hages will not be coaching the J.V. team this year, but we still expect a good job, if not better. Left to Right, Kneeling: E. Coppinger, C. Chalmers, P. Lowe, K. Softball Dukettes NBC Champs The 1977 Garber girls' softball team finished its season with a fine 18-5 re- cord. They won the NBC League Championship with a 6-2 record and made it into the class B district finals. The team was Garber’s best ever, led by NBC first team standouts Jill Jacobs at shortstop. Sue Havercamp at outfield and Karyn Flues at pitcher. With several returning key players for the 1978 season it should be a good one. FROM LEFT TO RIGHT. FIRST ROW: Sam Slates. Bill Willcttc. Dale Bennet, Mark Brody. Jim Thompson. SECOND ROW: Steve Zurvalec, Coach Skinner. Keith Schultz, Mark Hewitt. Cross Country Team Builds Garber 1977 Cross Country team had a rough season this year but not winning a meet doesn’t mean they’re going to quit. Our team had a good attitude and will be looking forward to next year’s season. Re- ceiving varsity letters are Steve Zurvalec, Jim Thompson, Mark Hewitt, and Sam Slades. Sam Slades was the only freshman to re- ceive a varsity letter this year and Mark Hewitt received the com- mended award of most valuable player. Varsity Goes To Playoffs! Left to Right. Kneeling: C. This year's Varsity Team advanced further than any other recent Garber team, ending the season with an overall 8-2 record. Making the N.B.C. All-Conference first team were Marty Spencer, Bill Deary, Tom Lesperance. Steve Conway, and Bill Haga. Honora- ble Mention were Brad Estabrook, Dave Charron, Wayne Lipinski, Wayne Phelps, Milton Mackey, and Ron Henika. Making the All-County Team Were Marty Spencer, Brad Esta- brook, Tom Lesperance, Bill Haga, and Steve Conway. Voted Garber's Most Valuable Player was Tom Lesperance; Most Improved Player was Mike Fournier. Golden Helmet winners were Marty Spencer, Brad Estabrook, and Bill Deary. Coach Harvey was selected as the best coach in the N.B.C. for guiding the Dukes to such a fine season. The Juniors on this team will form the nucleus of a team that has an excellent chance of going all the way to the Silver Dome. 69 Front Row: W. Vanderlooven, J. McCormick, H. Hagas, J. Mohr, F. Adelman, J. Giffel, B Clark. Second Row: C. Alarie, S. Berta, C. Moulthrop, M. Kozak, T. Henika, T. Trimble, R. Garcia. R. Johnson, S. Tweedie, S. Ascl, Back Row: Coach Cox, D. Samilak. R. Horn, J. Allman, C. Kerkau, S. Darling, W. Pike, J. Julien, B. Martin, M. Boucier. J.V.’s Take N.B.C. This year’s J.V. football team finished the season on top of the N.B.C. and had a 3-4-1 overall record. Terry Henika was the leading ground gainer and Steve Henika was the leading tackier, with Wayne Pike coming in second in the tackle catagory. Although the record seems unimpressive at first glance, the team did surprisingly well considering there were several coaches during the season. We're sure that they will improve next year when the bulk of them move up to Varsity. Bottom Row. Left to Right: K. Holsinger, D. Laisurc. M. Clare, D. Gage, M. French, S. VanSumeren, M. VanSumcrcn, T. Sharrard. Middle Row: R. Jacobs, P. Kerr, J. Seymour, R. Dettmer, D. Krauss, B. Rosenburg, D. Doriean, K Korpal, S. Willette, B Davidson, S. Walraven. Top Row: M. Verhacghe, T. Lane, S. Dyer. J. Pergande, P. Smith, D. Duso, J. Giffin, P. Kerr, C. Conway, K. Ayres, J. Jacobs, Coach Pfundt. Frosh Look To Improvement Our Freshmen football team won six out of the eight games they played to make their first season an exciting one. Even though this record is quite good the determined freshmen will stop at nothing to improve it next year as J.V.’s. Scoring the most points for the team was Jeff Pergande with 38, and close behind him was Darren Duso with 36. Darren also had the most tackles (58). Dave Doriean won the most improved award and Darren Duso won the most valuable player award. r I v ■ • M r i 'Hi, 71 Standing left to right: C. Ahler, K. Eckstorm, A. Lipinski, K. Estabrook, J. Girls Eliminated In Tournament The Girl's Varsity Basketball team just couldn't get it together this season. The Dukettes closed after being eli- minated in the first round of the District Finals Tourna- ment. Outstanding players were Karyn Flues, Amy Li- pinski, and Julie Kerr. The Dukettes are optimistic with returning players Cindy Ahler, Kim Estabrook, Julie Kerr, and Pia Lowe. I Standing, Left to Right: J. Darling, M. West, A. Essex, C. Racck, M. Lipinski, G. Wcilcr, L. Basketball team had a long hard season this year. Even though the wins were few and far between the season was not a total loss because the girls gained experience which will be very valuable next year. High scorer for the season was Judy Darl- ing with 96 points. Mary Jo Lipinski was close behind with 83 points. Mary Jo also made the most free throws, she took 39 shots and made 19. All these girls are to be commended for their sportsmanship after every loss because if a team doesn't know how to lose it is not a team. 74 Kneeling left to right: V. Johnson, K. Beattie, J. Bay City Central and John Glenn. Losses came at the hands of MacArthur twice, John Glenn and Eisenhower. Despite this the girls managed to finish 4th in the Regional. An outstanding doubles team included Shelly Murphy and Cathy Ed- wards. Voted most improved were Diane Atkinson and Karrie Beattie. 75 From left to right: S. Sherman. R. Frenzke. M. Jaeger. In the first game the Freshmen and the Juniors played a very defensive match. There was no score after several overtimes so they gave the game to the Freshmen for carry- ing the ball a few more yards than the Juniors. In the next game the Seniors expectantly out scored the Sophomores by a score of 14-0. In the final match, the Seniors showed their experience by sliding by the Freshmen. Their spirit and skill won the best squad trophy and Dinah Duso won the special talent award. At basketball camp, the squad netted a total of 10 ribbons. The girls also made signs and brought goodies for the teams on away games. 82 Bottom: J. Jones, Left to right standing: J. Akers, M. Suessmuth, K. Berg, Middle: S. Blumenau, Top: L. Perreault. J.V.’s Continue To Improve The J.V. cheerleaders got an early start this year with car washes and practices during the summer. The enthusiastic cheerleaders not only cheered, but spent a good deal of time painting signs. Selling game-ball and raffle tickets at foot- ball games were also a part of the girls activities. The J.V. cheerleaders did a good job this year in keeping up the spirit of the crowd. Top — Mary Reed; Middle — Kim Ratfish; Bottom — Ann Napieralski. Under Coach Kurt Rudolph, the swimmers complied 8 wins and 4 defeats. Seniors Mark Kennedy, Don Rose, Jim Hall, and Chuck Vincent are all current Varsity recordholdcrs. Several team members have qualified for the State Meet, and the results look promising. Impressive 85 Row 1: P. Lowe, L. Lesperance, D. Hair, L. Schaefer, T. Kotcwa. Row 2: C. Chalmers, C. That was the main trouble the team had. Outstanding players Karyn Flues and Pia Lowe helped the effort, though, and the team finished second in the N.B.C. The team is soon to complete tournaments. J.V.’s Start Slow Lack of experience also hurt the J.V. Vol- leyball team. This caused the team to lose their first six games before they finally started to win. The team has shown lots of potential and is beginning to develop it. Kelly Schaefer, Mary Jo Lipinski, and Jane Johnson were among those to show the most promising per- formances. 87 From Row: Bill Haga. Greg Kennan, Steve Brown, Marty Spencer, Terry Coburn. The Editor-in-Chief Lynn Perreault along with Art Editor Cathy Witte and Photo Editor Bill Mro- zinski worked with only a handful of staffers and Advisor Mr. Schilling to put together Garber’s first book with color photos. A few other staffers helped set new time records for meetings. The first three deadlines ended with meetings after midnight, the third one setting a record at 2 A.M. Outstanding staffers were Rick Luezak and Karen Davies. Able last-minute assistance came in the personages of Joel Blumenau and Lori Perreault. It was an occasion to remember Times past: good times, bad times, acing tests, bombing out, cutting class, games, dances, and parties. It was a time to look to the future: vacations, school, the service, sweethearts, fiance’s, mates and families, and careers. It was itself a vision of hope for many. It was something many of us had looked forward to since we arrived. It was a symbol of the end of one time and the beginning of another. The music of our Time was provided by the band Giggles and was held at the Holiday Inn in Bay City. On this evening the Times of the class of 1977 wound down to an end and the Times of the class of 1978 began to end. For others they were just beginning. 99 Shake Your Pom-Pons The Garber Pom-Pon girls helped to add life to already fantastic half-time shows at football and basketball games. This energe- tic group of girls performed regardless of weather and added much to the crowds' en- joyment. The Spinners The 1977 Garber Majorettes, along with the band, marched in all kinds of weather to entertain the Duke Crowds at basketball and football games. From that point on they were no longer students, they were alumni. Whether they would think kindly of Garber in the future would depend on much. After the presentation of the diplomas the stage cleared in preparation for the class of 1978. The juniors became the seniors and their last year began. 103 1. Nut Squad. 2. An empty school, drivers’ ed., tennis, trees, fields, golf, picnics, the beach, the country, the north, sunrises with time to enjoy them, summer jobs, unbearable heat and sometimes unseasonable cold. It was also so- mething that happened in another galaxy a long, long time ago (or perhaps in our own a long time hence). Waiting for a chance to travel through time outside a theatre. The time that was the summer of 1977 was many things, but it could only hint at the times to come in the summer of 1978. Summer ’77 “Algernon” Smash Hit FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON is a deeply moving drama about a young retarded man named Charley Gordon who has the level of his intelligence raised to the genius level by surgical means. Charley's surge of intelligence alters his social, emotional, vocational, and educational life. However, once his intelligence peaks it is discovered that he will regress to his original state or possible beyond. The ways he touches lives and how others touch his is the theme behind FLOWERS FOR AL- GERNON. Jim Tarter's portrayal was both convincing and moving. He played the part of Charley with the true sensitivity of an artist. Leslie Baldwin as Alice Kinnian was receptive and emotional. The part could not have been played better by anyone else. The play is humorous at least, riotous at best. It is the story of a “scheming” widow who maneuvers her intended fiance through several escapades until he gets the nerve to pop the question. Marilyn Harmon played the widow Mrs. Levi and Larry Jacobs was the unwitting Mr. Vandergelder. Other strong performances were supplied by Chris Grobbel and freshman Nan Tarter. 109 I. Homecoming ’77, had begun. It didn’t end until late into the night of October 15th. The Garber Marching Band announced Homecoming to Essex- ville in the annual Homecoming parade. The tradi- tional bonfire took place that night. The next night the mighty Dukes showed their glory as they beat the Traverse City Gladiators, 18-14. Halftime cere- monies brought the traditional march of the Home- coming representatives. At the height of the even- ing, Wayne Phelps and Amy Falvey were crowded Duke and Duchess of 1977. The dance titled “Star- light Dreams” put the finishing touches on Home- coming 1977. Homecoming 77 It’s All In The Dimension The staff of the 1977- 1978 DIMENSION led by editor Patty Miller and under the guidance of Mr. Flood managed to carry on the fine tradition of Garber journalism.
