Then I think how much more for- tunate we are than some other people of the world. The war is not yet over. True the guns have ceased firing the bombs no longer tall but war has left in it's wake a terrible aftermath of hunger depression and despair. Millions struggle along without proper clothing and shoes they live in make-shift shelters, sleep cold because of no bedding and wake tired and miserable to a world of hunger. Homes are gone, schools and churches gone, and in many hearts all hope is gone. How can we Americans understand this? We trooped off to spend a happy day in a well equipped High School. We are rested after g Toed nights sleep under warm blankets in a bed which is very comfort- gb e. We were fortified after a hearty American breakfast. lother did not have to prepare our lunch because we eat a hot wholesome meal at school. Yet, I have heard of a town in Europe where people are eating grass and bark and dying of poisoning and famine. If I can impress upon the minds of the students and faculty that reed these lines and make them realize how fortunate we are to be just Americans, I feel that this would be the greatest message I could write. HISTORY OF GANS SCHOOL The history of Gans school dates back about fifty years to nlndian Territoryu days and to a little one room school house that was used for both school and Church. A school that seldom lasted longer than three to six months out of the yearvand one that the teacher was paid by subscription. In 1907 our first free school was built. It was a frame building with an nOdd Fellow Halln above. We had two teachers, and children that were grown came to school in the first, second and third grades. Many of the old settlers probably still remember some of the old teachers, Professors Plank, Boswell and Miss Mintie. Attendance improved so rapidly we soon neededmora room. By 1910 something had to be done. The, District voted bonds and built the big two story 'brick build- ing which was considered one of the best schools in dw county at the time. The patrons felt we were making a great progress for we now had four teachers and all the school rooms had steam heat. In 1917 and 1918 attendance was still and more teachers were added. Application improvin g for an nAce credited High Schooln rating was made, but the State Department was very strict and we were not approved for even a two year rating until 1919. In 1921 we were rated as a three year but not until 1924 were we years credit. UAccredited High Schoolu qualified for full four The next mark of progress was in 1926 when Hamel and Baldrldge consolidated with Gans and the buses be- gan to bring the children to school. From that year up until now, progress has been steady despite all or handicaps. Basket-Ball became the leading sport. Both boys and girls down the line have been winners. Many tro- phies show their sportsmanship and determination to Wlho ' In 1958 the brick building burned but we were for- tunate in having some leaders that lost no time in con- tacting the right parties. Less than a year later, thanks to the W.P.A., we moved into a new rock buildhg that is the pride and joy of every single person in the school District. Our building is,modern in every way. We have runn- ing water and a cooling system that keeps water just right for drinking. A kitchen that meets the health re quirements, and lunch room equipment sufficient tosarve two hundred fifty to three hundred children. We have lighting system, in-door rest rooms, a well equipped library and a beautiful'gym. The cleanliness and care of this building has been Mr. Calloway's main object and many are the compliments he receives from visitors.
