Dy Rob Lewkowicz K. i Feature photo by Tina DiSalvo 140 Drinking Liobiiity Low May Affect Frots by Lon JohelQ The Store Supreme Court s reinstatement of a drinking liability lawsuit may have a sriffling ef fea on social fraternities at Gannon and other colleges across Pennsylvania. The lawsuit, in which a teenager who wrecked his cor after drinking at a company Christmas party, claims the firm is liable for his injuries, was reinstated after the court ruled in a 6-1 decision that hosts can be sued for negli- gence in Pennsylvania if they serve alcohol to underage guests that are later injured because they ore intoxicated. Fraternities, the centers of social, and often underage drinking on college campuses, fill the role of hosts and, according to the new rul- ing, are liable for their underage guests. David Jurenovich, director of student living and advisor to Gannon's Interfrarerniry Council, says the ruling is going to be a very sensitive issue here. Jurenovich said Gannon will try to develop awareness and cooperation within both the fraternities and the administration ' 'Cooperation is the key. Gannon doesn't want to make rules that will be made to be broken. According to Jurenovich, administrators and fraternity members are finalizing plans to bring back the Fraternity Task Force. The Task Force, which worked last year to improve the image of Gannon fraternities, did nor operate last se- mester The task force will include Gannon faculty, fraternity members, and members of the IFC. One of the major issues we will deal with will be alcohol awareness. We want to reinforce what we have been trying to convey to the students. If you ore underage and are drinking, you pur yourself in a very dangerous position, said Jurenovich. Keirh Taylor, 1983 IFC president, said he was not aware of the new ruling. assumed it hod always been the law. It has always been a problem for fraternities, Taylor said. Taylor said the fraternities are already ' 'more owore of the situation. We don 't want trou- ble and the school doesn 'r want trouble. I think, working together, we con avoid it. I know ac- tions will be taken. Current IFC president Dernie Uzelac said that, although he was only met with IFC members once since his election lost week and hosn 'r had the opportunity to take direct action, ' 'sugges- tions hove been made Uzelac Is confident that when actions ore tok- en, the fraternities will cooperate They don't wont suits ogoinsr them, Uzelac said.
