THE MILITARY SIDE OF COLLEGE LIFE ll|k f I While basic corps cadets were grumbling and mumbling their fourth general order, the gung-ho Pershing Rifles were working seriously to- ward their victory at the Gannon College Invitational Drill Meet. A great gap of precision separated the two, but the military side of college life was best characterized by the new corps of cadets, the Raiders. They captured the romantic imaginations of students educated in John Wayne War. By January, however, the Raiders knew better than to idealize their role. With frozen ears and toes they dragged wearily home to wash the dust from their bellies. 15

Careful not to overcut, they arrive, record the testable ma- terial of the lecture in fat notebooks, gather their things and move on. But once in a fortunate week a point is forced home or a student's intelligent query catches fire and for a few minutes everyone forgets the clock. The material of the course — be it Finance or Fine Arts — is suddenly very pertinent and those not questioning or arguing listen in- tently. The bell rings and those who do leave, do so reluctantly. Students discuss their subject ani- matedly as they move off down the halls, forget- ting a book or scarf. They are learning. 16
