THE NEW GANNON The wind always whistles around Perry Square, but in the past year it has whistled a new tunc, a song of newness. Now the wind is the wind of change. For Gannon College the zephyrs have brought much, new buildings, new facilities, new students, and, most of all, a new spirit. The 1963 Lance here begins a near-impossible task; it attempts to capture the gifts of the wind on glossy paper, to encrystalize a way of life on black and white pages. The life of the student is a very special mode of existence, shel- tered yet fretted with subtle entrapment for both intellect and spirit. The student life is the very heart and soul of a society, the protector of its heritage, the seer of its visions, the former of its future. Thus the student lives in a world divided: he toils in the sometimes misty but always fruitful fields of the intellect, but he dwells in the modern world of change and practicalities. So when the matt rial fact ts of the world encroach upon the hallowed domain of his college, th studt nt reacts in ways as varied as the individuality of the human spirit, yet as similar as the universal kinship of mankind. In the year just finished the students of Gannon have pursued the elusive prizes of tin intellect in a gleaming new building replete with walls of glass and steel, daylight illumination, and thermostatically controlled climate-conditioning. They listened to lectun s by young educators, eager and able, still trailing auras of new thoughts and great universities.
