NINETEEN HUNDRED AN SC|ENTIA CO-EDITORS PAUL GROSSER RICHARD TRZECIAK Multi- purpose Building I'm: Itnu tion Administration Faculty Wehrle II. .11 Lib rary c o L L E G E Engineering Building I M m' mi n n ii 11 i ■ m M Among Father Lor- rci's many and varied interests is bowline. He has had the lead- ing lemur average in the I.M. Bowlini; League as the spark- plug of the Faculty Team. V wov DEDICATION He is a quiet man. He is a dignified man ol an unimposing nature. He ma usually be seen working in his office, walking through the hulls of OM Main, or talking with those who work in Cannon's library. He is Gannon College's Dean of the Division ot Humanities. Reverend Louis H. Lord better known to the fac- ulty and students as Father l.orei. Father Lorei tirst came to Gannon as a student in 1939, when the school was still known as Cathedral College. In 1941, he went to Washington, I). C. to study at Catholic University. He earned his Bacheloi ol Aits degree in Philosophy in I! and his Master of Arts degree in Philosophy in 1911. He completed his theological studies in 1947. and was ordained in May ol that year. He received his Master's degree in Library Science in 1948. after he had returned to Cannon in the capacity of head librarian. Father Lord was ordained on May 15, the feast day of Saint John the Baptist de la Salle, who worked in the held of education. It is fitting, therefore, that u|xm his return to Gannon, Father Lord should be placed in a position so vital to the devel- opment and success of a college. At the time, Gannon was small, and its library was proportionally small. But Gannon was a growing school, and it was imperative that the school library grow with the school. To Father Lorei fell the task of filling the shelves of the library with volumes that would be of use to the increasing number of students in an increasing number of fields. But. it was not simply a matter of placing books on shelves. Rather, it was a matter of carefully selecting books that were needed at the time — those that were relevant to the courses taught, and valuable to the students attending. This is not an easy task in view of the countless number of books which cover the subjects taught here at Gannon College. In addition to his position at Gannon, Father Lorei held memberships in various library organizations, among which was the Catholic Library Association. At differ- ent times, he held the offices of publicity chairman, and chairman of the Western Pennsylvania L'nit of the Catholic Library Association : and he was the first editor of the newsletter published by the organization. Father Lorei has been Dean of the Division of Humanities since 1956. This ap- pointment, of course, made it impossible for Father Lorei to continue his work in the library, but the results of his work may be seen in the number and quality of the books in Gannon's library today. His contribution to the development and success of Gannon College is a school library — a center of knowledge — that has kept pace with the expansion of the college. So, to you, Father Lorei. do we dedicate this 1961 issue of the Gannon College Lance. HIS EXCELLENCY, MOST REV. EDWARD P. McMANAMAN, AUXILIARY BISHOP OF ERIE Movt Reverend Edward P. McManaman, Auxiliary Bishop and Pro-Vicar General of the Erie Diocese, from his position as secre- tary of the Board of Trustees works tirelessly for the development of a greater Gannon College. HIS EXCELLENCY, MOST REV. JOHN MARK GANNON CHANCELLOR OF GANNON COLLEGE His excellency Most Reverend John Mark Gannon, Archbishop-Bishop of Erie, has worked tirelessly for more than forty years to provide the educational facilities found in the 13 counties of Northwestern Penn- sylvania which constitute his diocese. He recognized early in life that man has lx th an eternal and temporal destiny to achieve and that the surest means to that achieve- ment is the education and training of youth. In this respect, Bishop Gannon has recently inaugurated an ambitious, long- range development program for the pur- pose of increasing the facilities of the college. We cannot adequately express our gratitude for the abiding presence of our beloved founder and Chancellor. HOARD OF TRUSTEES Members of the Board of Trustees: Wilfred J. Many times in a publication such as this there is a tendency tc overlook the reason, the ONLY reason for Gannon College, for any College . . Education. On this page, and the following few pages we attempt to present those students who have shown they can excel in the only product which a College can place on the open market. Learning. By electing students to member- ship, it also serves as a reward for their efforts in participating in the plays staged by the College. This Cast in no way takes the place of the regular College Dramatic Club. We participate in the objective by promot- ing dramatics on die campus. At Gannon the Cast produces a one-act play each se- mester in conjunction with the Cultural Series. The Officers of the Kappa Beta Cast are Don Kazmaier. pres., George Fidel, vice- pres., Thomas Bailey, sec, and David Bever, Tres. The Appointment, a serious, one-act play was produced last May. To this organization each year falls the task of presenting the Gannon Winter Carnival. Under the leadership of presi- dent Bob Triana. the 1960 Carnival was the most success- ful one ever presented. Blue Key will follow this success by presenting the United States Navy Band in the Gannon Audi on May 14th. Membership in Blue Key can be had by any full-time student at Gannon in his Junior or Senior year provided he has maintained an average of 2.5 or better and has shown qualities of leadership in the many clubs and organizations on campus. The Alpha Kappa Pi Fraternity of Gannon College was founded on May 1, 1960. Although this date will be one of the most memorable occasions in the Fraternity, many long Laborous hours were spent in the planning of such an undertaking. Capt. Ludie Kinney, the Assistant Professor of Military Science and Tactics at Gannon College, along with Richard DiCicco, formulated the plans which were the basis of the young organization. After one unsuccessful attempt at colonization, the Alpha Kappa Pi Fraternity gained their ini- tial foothold on the campus on May 1, 1960. Once the okay was given by Fr. Barcio, the Dean of Men, the Fraternity put many of its plans into operation. The Main long range objective of the organization is to become a chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, which is one of the top ten social Fraternities in the United States. High on the list of immediate objectives are scholastic leadership and everlasting social friendships. Be- cause of these and many more principles, Alpha Kappa Pi Fraternity is, and will continue to be, an asset to the Gannon College Campus. The men of Alpha Kappa Pi know that their Fraternity will grow along with the college and become an inte- gral part of the campus framework. AKIl's live it up at 61 8-Ball. The Beta Rho Chapter of Alpha Phi Delta was initiated at Gan- non in November of 1959. The membership of the fraternity is small and is meant to remain small. It is the belief of the 'brothers that small organizations give to its members individuality and the opportunity for each member to use his talents and to develop real bonds of friendship among the 'brothers'. For it is only in a small fraternity that brotherhood in the true sense can be realized. In this sense Alpha Phi Delta is restrictive, membership is an honor and hiyh scholastic standards must be met. This Years Sweetheart is pinned to Paisan Joe Or- lando. The Knights then had a head-knocking trio of games, all of which went down the drain, with three of the top rated small college fives in the country. To match the three game tailspin, the charges Milt Simon ran off a three game win binge, downing Findley. Waynesburg. and a tall Cumberland squad. The Knights tuned up for the Brown Indians of Olean. The exact locations have not been determined, although plans call for all of the new structures to be in the area bounded roughly by W. 7th St., Peach St., Walnut St.. and the Bay. The cost of the new dorm is to be near $650,000. The fourth segment is a field house, essential to the physical welfare of the growing student popula- tion. Containing about 30.000 square feet of area and costing $600,000. the field house will be part of an ex- tensive athletic plant which will encompass facilities for baseball, IM football, swimming, tennis, and all other IM sports. In the summer of 1960 Gannon formally launched the first large-scale appeal to the local community for fi- nancial assistanc e. Erie industrial business firms re- sponded generously. We can- not claim to have produced the best yearbook in the history of Gannon College . . . nor. we hope, take the Manic Tor producing the worst. We will, however, say that it w.i a lot ol work, that we shed our hlood. sweat, and tears to produce a yearhook we can he proud of. and we hope our readers will he just as proud. It couldn't have been done without the help of many. Mike. Dave, Fred. George, Joe. Jerry, Lou. ('ail. Sue. Gwen, Ann. and Spring. We thank them and wish that they won't ever get mixed up in one of these publications again, unless they like to work. This then is the end of the 1961 LANCE . . . we hope you like it. This center conducts testing of students, but these testing services have also been made available to local industry and commerce and have been used extensivel) and effectively by them. In addition to this testing service, the Place- ment Center has been most effective in placing trained and competent graduates with local firms, to the extent that several hundred Gan- non graduates are now employed in position s of responsibilit) and skill. Thus Gannon has helped materially in furnishing a source of future employees so essential to a growing and alert community . In 1958, in line with its policy of assiMin _! the community, Gannon College set up an Indus- trial Relations ('enter. The Center provides local funis with opportunities to establish or improve personnel and industrial relations pro- plains. The ('.enter conducts planning work- shops with companies, furnishes Consultive services and administers tests and surveys and interprets their results. More than 10 companies in laic and the surrounding area have availed themselves of these services in the short time the ( lenter has been in existence. In the short span of 16 years. Gannon Col- lege has come to be an irreplaceable part of Erie and the surrounding communities. As a (enter of education for its youth, as a hub of culture and civic activity, as a well-spring for future employees for industry and commerce, and as a fountainhead for teachers and the pro- fessions its value to the area is incalculable. The presence of an accredited four-year college should certainly be used as a strong additional factor in attracting new industry to the area. - Ti — SiS Jt J I J 0
