FOREWORD Gannon College is a school for young men, and, appropriately enough, it is much like a young man itself — vibrant with youthful en- ergy and growing by leaps and bounds. In the 1960 Lance, we wish to tell you a little about the growth and progress of Gannon. On May 25, 1959, Gannon was honored to have Bishop John J. Wright of Pittsburgh speak at commencement exercises. The Bishop told a story of a second-generation American who found himself at a table surrounded by repre- sentarives of old Yankee families . . . The guests fell to talking, as such people inevitably do, about their ancestors. They told how this one had an ancestor who was high in the command of the United States armies, while yet another had an ancestor who was a merchant prince and another still an ancestor identified with a great banking firm. Finally, they took cogni- zance of our young friend and asked him, 'Who were your ancestors?'. He replied quietly, 'I have none; I am an ancestor!' This is the position of Gannon College in the collegiate world — a young man, who will be an ancestor. In the following pages, the story of this young man's progress, intellectually, spiritually, socially, and physically, will be told. Proposed new classroom building to be constructed at Seventh and Peach streets.
