The deep concentration at registration par- allels the seriousness of a final exam. A college can never be considered only as the sum of all its physical facilities. There is in every school that indefinable, intangible quality called school spirit. Gannon's growth and spirit go hand in hand. From humble beginnings in 1941, Gannon has grown to a full-sized col- lege,- but the story does not end with this year. On November 24, 1959, Fr. Nash, President of Gannon College, announced to the public and to the students of Gannon the school's ten-year program for expansion. This program, when completed, will place Gannon in a position sec- ond to none in the collegiate world. Gannon's spirit, too, is growing. The basis of this spirit is the school's traditional scholastic philosophy. Bishop Wright said, There is no Catholic col- lege so young, but it has ancestral roots in the 20 centuries of Christendom and, thanks to their influences on Christian culture, deep in the by-gone centuries of Greek and Roman philo- sophic, literary, and artistic history. These 20 centuries of tradition are eminently progressive in the best sense of the word, for only by a knowledge and appreciation of them can mod- ern man progress to a future world of happi- ness and peace. Convocation Day Mass, celebrated by Fa- ther Nash, assisted by Fathers Barcio and Bower, marked the opening of the school year. Religion may be defined as the virtue of tak- ing due notice of God and acting accordingly. In this sense, Gannon College is deeply relig- ious, for the Gannon graduate is firmly con- vinced of this one fact — that he is made for eternity, and not for time. Even while at school this growing conviction finds expression in Gannon's many religious activities, aimed at producing a spiritually mature person. Bishop Wright continues, . . . they (a group of young parents) hoped that college training would give their sons and daughters a certain intel- lectural calm like to that of which Cardinal Newman spoke, a spiritual resilience in the face of revolution, change, and adversity. They un- derstood that the Church makes this quality possible by opening up to us the world of grace and the vision of eternity, against which all things tend to fall into perspective,- but they wanted other studies than theology and relig- ion to accomplish something of this, too. Gan- non College strives for this spiritual resilience in all phases of her activity. Pete McNelis, Chuck Weiss, Ed Amicucci, and Father Pete board for the St. Thomas More trip to Puerto Rico.
