LANCE GANNON COLLEGE ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA I960 CO-EDITORS ANTHONY A. SALVIA WILLIAM C. FERTIG JR. FOREWORD Gannon College is a school for young men, and, appropriately enough, it is much like a young man itself — vibrant with youthful en- ergy and growing by leaps and bounds. In the 1960 Lance, we wish to tell you a little about the growth and progress of Gannon. On May 25, 1959, Gannon was honored to have Bishop John J. Wright of Pittsburgh speak at commencement exercises. The Bishop told a story of a second-generation American who found himself at a table surrounded by repre- sentarives of old Yankee families . . . The guests fell to talking, as such people inevitably do, about their ancestors. They told how this one had an ancestor who was high in the command of the United States armies, while yet another had an ancestor who was a merchant prince and another still an ancestor identified with a great banking firm. Finally, they took cogni- zance of our young friend and asked him, 'Who were your ancestors?'. He replied quietly, 'I have none; I am an ancestor!' This is the position of Gannon College in the collegiate world — a young man, who will be an ancestor. In the following pages, the story of this young man's progress, intellectually, spiritually, socially, and physically, will be told. Proposed new classroom building to be constructed at Seventh and Peach streets. PLANNING FOR PROGRESS INTELLECTUALLY Dick Trzeciak and Joe Kleiner study sliding friction in the physics lab. The only thing the self-service bookstore lacked was green stamps. The deep concentration at registration par- allels the seriousness of a final exam. A college can never be considered only as the sum of all its physical facilities. There is in every school that indefinable, intangible quality called school spirit. Gannon's growth and spirit go hand in hand. From humble beginnings in 1941, Gannon has grown to a full-sized col- lege,- but the story does not end with this year. On November 24, 1959, Fr. Nash, President of Gannon College, announced to the public and to the students of Gannon the school's ten-year program for expansion. This program, when completed, will place Gannon in a position sec- ond to none in the collegiate world. Gannon's spirit, too, is growing. The basis of this spirit is the school's traditional scholastic philosophy. Bishop Wright said, There is no Catholic col- lege so young, but it has ancestral roots in the 20 centuries of Christendom and, thanks to their influences on Christian culture, deep in the by-gone centuries of Greek and Roman philo- sophic, literary, and artistic history. These 20 centuries of tradition are eminently progressive in the best sense of the word, for only by a knowledge and appreciation of them can mod- ern man progress to a future world of happi- ness and peace. Bishop Gannon goes plans with Father Nash. over the ten-year PLANNING FOR PROGRESS SPIRITUALLY Ti Father Schanz conducts an evening of rec- ollection for C.C.D. teachers in the new St. Thomas chapel. Father Ciufoli blesses the entrance to the St. Thomas Aquinas chapel, aided by Fa- thers Gale, Bower, and Sullivan. Convocation Day Mass, celebrated by Fa- ther Nash, assisted by Fathers Barcio and Bower, marked the opening of the school year. Religion may be defined as the virtue of tak- ing due notice of God and acting accordingly. In this sense, Gannon College is deeply relig- ious, for the Gannon graduate is firmly con- vinced of this one fact — that he is made for eternity, and not for time. Even while at school this growing conviction finds expression in Gannon's many religious activities, aimed at producing a spiritually mature person. Bishop Wright continues, . . . they (a group of young parents) hoped that college training would give their sons and daughters a certain intel- lectural calm like to that of which Cardinal Newman spoke, a spiritual resilience in the face of revolution, change, and adversity. They un- derstood that the Church makes this quality possible by opening up to us the world of grace and the vision of eternity, against which all things tend to fall into perspective,- but they wanted other studies than theology and relig- ion to accomplish something of this, too. Gan- non College strives for this spiritual resilience in all phases of her activity. Pete McNelis, Chuck Weiss, Ed Amicucci, and Father Pete board for the St. Thomas More trip to Puerto Rico. PLANNING FOR PROGRESS SOCIALLY The TKE Italian restaurant is always a big hit at the Carnival. The Christmas Carnival Queen Contestants shop for formals. Aiello's new way to double-date. Father Schanz explains the Greek ety mology of laughter. To avoid the two-dimensional graduate who is lost in a three-dimensional world, Gannon Col- lege encourages each student to participate in the activities of his choice. There exists on cam- pus a multitude of clubs and organizations to fill the needs of the student. Off campus, in inter-collegiate relations with the girls' schools of Erie, the school encourages a mature and friendly approach. Bishop Wright indicates the importance of extra-curricular activities when he states, I have often thought that the boys who put the cow in the belfry at Harvard University some years ago learned some- thing in the process more important than any- thing they learned in the lecture halls during all the years that they were there. In any event, they got something out of their systems, which is a fairly important part of the process of growing up, too. I earnestly hope that they were not expelled if they were found out, be- cause such students, if they remained undiscov- ered and at Harvard, undoubtedly became trustees of the place if only because they had more initiative, inventiveness and plain get-up- and-go than those who told them not to try it because it couldn't be done. PLANNING FOR PROGRESS PHYSICALLY Ed Kondrad exhibits superb form with a forehand smash. When I call a man out, he's outl 10 A clothes-line drive into left-centerl Action is always fast at the Audi A dramatic new sports program was inaugu- rated this year with the arrival of Mr. Lazlo Doemeney, Physical Education Instructor. Mr. Doemeney brings to the Gannon campus a col- orful background and a wealth of experience in the world of sports activities. His efforts have given a new vitality to the Gannon intramural sports program. He was instrumental in form- ing teams for diving, water polo, table tennis, tumbling, fencing, and physical training. In ad- dition to its intramural program, Gannon com- petes in five inter-collegiate sports — basket- ball, baseball, golf, tennis, and rifle, under the direction of varsity coaches, Milton Simon, George Hesch, and Richard Fox. Sports were definitely not excluded in the new development program. One of the proposed developments includes a field house with a football field, a basketball court, and a swim- ming pool. This new recreation area is de- signed with an eye to the physical welfare of the growing student population and will cover an area of about 30,000 square feet. This is just one more example of Gannon's theme and our theme — planning for progress. DEDICATION Dean Gerald R. Kraus is playing one of the big roles in the development and progress of Gannon College. After receiving his degrees of Bachelor and Master of Sci- ence from Carnegie Institute of Technology, he came to Cathedral College in 1937. His service was interrupted here when he deverted his talents to industry. It was at this time that he founded the Kraus Manufacturing Com- pany. When Cathedral College dissolved and its assets became Gannon College, the new school had not long to wait be- fore Gerald Kraus returned. Here, outstanding skills as an educator and administrator marked him for his important role in promoting Gannon's progress. When, in 1955, a new reorganization of the College was announced, it was only to be expected that Professor Kraus would be included. With the establishment of the three di- visions of Gannon College, Mr. Kraus was named Dean of the Division of Pure and Applied Science. This appointment was all the more important because of the almost simul- taneous addition of an engineering curriculum to the school. Because of rare qualities of insight and ability to see the whole picture Dean Kraus has led his division to many achievements: graduates of Gannon's engineering depart- ment are widely sought; applicants to graduate schools from the departments of Biology and Chemistry are read- ily accepted. A fertile imagination, coupled with an inventive genius, has brought Dean Kraus and Gannon College to the at- tention of industry. Primarily a mathematician, he is widely known for his interest in and knowledge of all phases of the various sciences. Dean Kraus' contributions to Gannon's progress have not been merely those of an educator behind a desk, for he is also a member of various boards and committees about the school. He is a member of the President's Council, the Committee on Admissions, and the Advisory Council for the Department of Engineering. For long, devoted, and dedicated service to Gannon Col- lege, for an ability to give more to his students than merely what is in the book, and for his many contributions to Gannon's progress in the past, present, and future we dedicate the 1960 Lance to Dean Gerald R. Kraus. 13 Gannon College welcomes the challenge of the twentieth century — the challenge presented to the intellect by the mysteries of the universe — the chal- lenge to understand — by giving birth to new knowl- edge and understanding in the mind of the student. PLAN FOR MENTAL ACHIEVEMENT HIS EXCELLENCY, MOST REV. JOHN MARK GANNON CHANCELLOR OF GANNON COLLEGE His excellency Most Reverend John Mark Gannon, Archbishop-Bishop of Erie, has worked tirelessly for more than forty years to provide the educational facilities found in the 13 counties of Northwestern Pennsylvania which constitute his diocese. He rec- ognized early in life that man has both an eternal and temporal destiny to achieve and that the surest means to that achievement is the education and training of youth. In this respect, Bishop Gannon has recently inaugurated an ambitious, long-range development program for the purpose of increasing the facilities of the college. We cannot adequately express our gratitude for the abiding presence of our beloved founder and Chancellor. HIS EXCELLENCY, MOST REV. EDWARD P. McMANAMAN, AUXILIARY BISHOP OF ERIE Most Reverend Edward P. McManaman, Auxiliary Bishop and Pro-Vicar General of the Erie Diocese, from his position as secretary of the Board of Trus- tees works tirelessly for the development of a greater Gannon College. The student learns to develop the ability to express himself clearly and effectively, and to attain a capacity for lit- erary appreciation. He also becomes aware of the beauty of the fine arts, and is acquainted with the literature and customs of a culture other than his own. The Division also provides the Hu- manities student with an intellectual basis for Faith and the prac- tice of religion, by imparting an understanding of the meaning of self to the world, to his fellow man, and to his Creator. On this and the succeeding pages we have repeated that story. It was a mild February day, one that turned people's thoughts to Spring, when Dr. Joseph Wehrle walked up the steps of the Old Strong Mansion. The Erie landmark had been unoccupied for the last ten years, ever since old Annie Strong had passed away. Since then, the fabulous home had been kept in shape by a battery of servants as the Strong heirs tried to peddle the property. They encountered little success in this era where dollars came hard and were not to be spent on beautiful but impractical homes. Then, Bishop Gannon purchased the property for $35,000, which included the livery stables at the rear of the Mansion. And thus Gannon College began with one building, one livery stable, and few students . . . The forerunner of Gannon College, Cathedral College, had been operating at the Ca- thedral Prep School as a two year institution. But Dr. Wehrle was not satisfied with this setup and seized upon the Old Strong Mansion as the answer to the enlargement of the inadequate Cathedral College. So equipped with a dream he started out in 1941 to build the college Erie so badly needed. And with an eye to the invaluable aid Bishop Gannon had given to the school, the old Cathedral College became Gannon College. Enrollment figures reached 207 the first year. The livery stables were converted into the Downey Hall of Science and the Strong Mansion became Old Main with classrooms and administrative offices. The year was 1941. Things were going smoothly — too smoothly. As the struggling young college battled for recognition, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and dealt what almost turned out to be a death blow to Gannon College. Overnight the enrollment dropped to less than 30, as students flocked to join the colors. A dream was shattered; no college could survive such a blow, but Gannon College did, and with a stubbornness that amazed area edu- cators, hung on grimly from year to year with its two buildings and a handful of students . . . The Library Building was started in 1946 to provide a library and classrooms at the cost of $350,000. Before the last brick was sealed on the splendid Library Building in 1948, plans were announced for the building of a new Auditorium that would match the finest in the country. With the growth of the school, the faculty soon expanded to such a degree that the beautiful Jarecki Home at 221 West 6th was purchased for a faculty residence for Gannon professors. In this same year, 1950, the present ROTC frame house was bought as the Army installed a unit to train men as officers. Within five years the college had grown from two buildings and a few dozen students to seven buildings and an enrollment of almost 1,000. The war had almost ruined Gannon, but the post-war boom had saved it . . . The year 1950 was a year of rest for the college, consolidating and catching up with the problems the rapid growth had caused. But the Fisher Hotel was purchased along with a couple of frame buildings on West 7th behind the hotel for future expansion. In 1953 the college definitely decided to estab- lish an engineering school, mindful of the many problems it presented, to train area young men for the Erie industries. RH?nri The St. Thomas More Club is an organization of Catholic students whose primary objective is an active furtherance of Catholic ideals through the lay apostolate. To achieve this objective, a varied program of events is planned each year to develop its members and the student body spiritually, intellectually, and socially. Each prospective member must undergo an eight week pro- bation period, during which they are required to fulfill the obligations of daily Mass, Rosary, and meditation. The Pro- bation period is climaxed by a retreat at the Trappist Monastary in Gethsemani, Kentucky. The myriad of activities in which the members of the Club of the Year for 1959 participate cannot all be related here. Representative of these religious and social activities are the TV for God series, the Fatima seminar, the Variety Show, and the entertainment of children from St. Joseph's Home. Kathy Stevens, Chuck Weiss, and Pat Delaney review the script for a TV for God presentation. Jack Paruso speaks at the first Fatima Seminar. FATIMA SEMINAR T. V. To cite only one example, the work of Blue Key in sponsoring and conducting the annual Christmas Carnival undoubtedly does more toward unifying the student body and maintaining friendly relation- ships with the girls' schools than any other single project. 84 MANAGEMENT CLUB In the past two years, the Manage- ment Club has become prominent upon the Gannon campus for its superlative management of the car- riage house, now universally known as the KKK. The best word to de- scribe th e club's activities is Pro- gressive. DRAMA CLUB Five students with time on their hands, sitting in a local establish- ment after attending a dramatic production, began bemoaning the fact that Gannon did not have a drama club. Someone suggested that such an organization be formed; the ideas then came in a deluge. Thus the Gannon College Drama Society, the First Knighters, was born. The first production of the new organization was Dial M for Murder, which was performed at the Villa Maria College Concert Hall in April of 1959. In December of that same year, the First Knight- ers presented The Little Foxes, under the direction of Mr. Richard J. Weiland, newly appointed head of the Drama and Speech depart- ment. In March of 1960, the play- ers presented their second produc- tion, The Male Animal in theater- in-the-round at Dale Hall. Members of the First Knighters had also ap- peared in the Mercyhurst College productions of Stardust and The Crucible, as well as the Villa Maria College play, The Velvet Glove. Alpha Psi Omega, the national honorary dramatic fraternity, was installed on the Gannon campus in February of 1960. Membership to Alpha Psi Omega is awarded on the basis of service and outstand- ing ability in roles and duties per- formed. Charter members of the Alpha Alpha chapter at Gannon are John Bailey, G. Ronald Casey, Donald Kazmaier, Robert Middle- ton, and David Beyer. The cast of The Little Foxes : I. to r.: Bob Middleton, Dave Beyer, Lillian Egnot, Di- rector Richard J. Nash looks on. P. S. E. A. Gannon's chapter of the Pennsyl- vania State Educational Association was chartered in December of 1959. Hirt, native Erieite who gave forty years of his life to public service as a judge of the Com- monwealth. On Convocation Day, also, awards and recognition were given to students who had been nominated to Who's Who, and to those who had achieved the Dean's List. Guest speaker for the occasion was Theodore Hu- sted, Jr., the vice-dean of the school of law at the University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Husted spoke of the idea and the ideals of a broad liberal education, and asked the student body to give serious consid- eration to the fields of teaching and public service as possible careers. Archbishop Gannon, Chancellor of Gannon College, presents the honorary degree to Judge Hirt. DAY Pat Masson receives a spe- cial letter of commendation from Archbishop Gannon for placing upon the Dean's List in two consecutive semesters. CHRISTMAS CARNIVAL The Christmas Carnival is the Mardi Gras of Gannon College. Each year, it is the biggest social event in collegiate Erie. All organizations which are active on campus combine their efforts under the direction of Blue Key to provide a gay holiday atmosphere. Every year brings new prizes, games, and booths, such as the Lance Dizzy Rat booth, where the im- mortal Mish-Moo performed. The three-day celebra- tion is climaxed by the crowning of the Christmas Carnival Queen. This year's queen is Miss Rosina Nedresky of St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing. BASEBALL Baseball arrived at Gannon two short years ago, and, although it is the school's newest varsity sport, Gannon's batsmen have met with unusual success. Last year's Knights, behind the strong pitching of Val Durkac, swept a twinbill from Buf- falo and split two with a strong Canisius squad. The Gannon batsmen benefit from the fact that most of the players participate in fast sandlot leagues, such as the Glen- wood League in Erie and the Armco League in the Pittsburgh area during the summer months. Fenc- ing, along with organized swimming, made its ap- pearance on our asphalt campus this year under the direction of Lazlo Doemeny, a former Hungarian free- dom fighter. Using Dale Hall and the Audi, Mr. Doe- meny presented fencing classes to Gannon men as well as to the girls at the area schools. Swimming was undertaken at the Prep pool on Sundays as well as at the Erie Boys' Club during the week. The men's fencing classes proved so successful, that the possibil- ity of intercollegiate competition with some of the area colleges was considered. The Reserve Officer's Training Corps exists to provide a pool of trained officers to meet the needs of the government. At Gannon College, the ROTC curriculum contains two programs. All fneshmen and sophomores are enrolled in the basic course, while the juniors and seniors may, if accepted, enroll in the advanced course. Included in the basic course program are fundamental military subjects such as map reading, individual and crew-served weapons, military history, and tactics. Students in the advanced course study logistics, military staff organi- zation, military intelligence, and military justice. All students partici- pate in the weekly drill period supervised by officers chosen from ad- vanced course cadets. It was quite a job, we admit, but we hope that our efforts have produced a yearbook which you will long enjoy. On the Lance page you met the people who devoted much of their time and energy towards helping us produce the book. We'd like to take this opportunity to thank our advisors, Father Slater and Mr. Young, our advertising agent Maurice Shoup, our photographer Louis Caravaglia, and our yearbook representative Robert Swanson, along with our entire staff — Frank, Mike, Bernie, Al, Jack, Carol, Wanda, Sue, Sam, and several others for special assistance. This, then, is the product of our combined efforts — the 1960 Lance. William C. Fertig, Jr. Anthony A. Salvia Co-Editors 164
