D., the second president of Gannon College, is revered as a priest, scholar, and administrator. A graduate of Cathedral Prep, Father Nash earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree at the Catholic University of America. He pursued graduate work at Catholic University and Fordham University, earning the degrees of Master of Arts in Philosophy and Licentiate in Sacred Theology. Following his ordination by Archbishop John Mark Gannon, Father Nash was assigned to the teaching staff of Gannon, and served as the first athletic director of the college. But Gannon was growing, and with this growth came increased administrative duties which forced Father Nash to lighten his teaching schedule and to assume the full-time position of Dean of Humanities. As Dean, he worked with Dr. Joseph J. Wehrle, founding president, to guide the growth of Gannon from a fledging institution of one building to a respected font of higher education comprising a physical plant of fourteen structures. In May, 1956, Father Nash's leadership, background, and understand- ing brought his appointment to the highest executive position of our campus. National recognition followed in June, 1957 when an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters was conferred upon him by Francis Cardinal Spellman at Fordham University. Perhaps the citation read on that occasion is descriptive of the future which Gannon College can expect under the guidance of her president: In the republic of learning there are no real rivalries; so Fordham University takes pleasure today in paying tribute to the new President of a young and flourishing Catholic College. . .Confident that under the vigorous leadership of Father Nash, Gannon College will continue to grow and to play an increasingly prominent part in the world of scholarship. . . We, the Class of 1958, echo those sentiments in dedicating this edition of the LANCE to Father Wilfrid John Nash, President of Gannon College. iS' %ce Bishop Edward P. McManaman has been a man of action in the formation of Gannon's Christian principles. From his position as secretary of the Board of Trustees, he has recognized the importance of a sound education and strived to create a mold that will produce sincere Catholic laymen. Through the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, Bishop McManaman established a means that will enable Gan- non graduates to transfer their Christian heritage to the younger generation. His ideals and educational experiences have been rewarding assets in fostering an institution that trains the students in their field of endeavor and in the means of at- taining their final end, eternal happiness. Archbishop Gannon has succeeded in both the construction of our great school and the development and training of young men. The buildings number fifteen, the en- rollment fifteen hundred. Through his financial aid, Gannon has grown from Old Main to the sixteenth largest college in Pennsylvania. From the wisdom acquired through more than fifty years in the priesthood, the Chancelor of Gannon College has enriched the lives of numerous young men with educational and spiritual ideals which reflect in the character of the graduates. The development of the whole man through the formation of intel- lectual, physical, and spiritual principles is the design of this outstanding clergyman. SWW o£ 7 cc4tee Members of the Board are, SEATED: Auxiliary Bishop Edward P. McManaman; Archbishop John Mark Gannon, Chairman of the Board; Monsignor Wladislaus J. Stanczak. STANDING: Rt. Rev. C. Raymond McQuillen, Rt. Rev. William L. Sullivan, Rev. Wilfred J. Nash, President of Gannon College. j£ zy s4ctvc4 Uf o4 et SEATED, Left to Right: J. LeGrand Skinner, John W. English, Arch- bishop John Mark Gannon, Rev. Wilfred J. Nash, Robert Merwin. STANDING: Thomas Hoffman, Michael J. Veschecco, Robert Keim, Philip Cochran, Vincent Lechner, Marvin Kohloff, William P. McVey, Frederick A. Blass, James Currie, John Sharkey, Jr. Sc tCC s4Ct Education is based on a pro- found conception of life and grows out of a system of philosophy, Gannon College accepts as its premise the principle of building the whole man; teaching a man not only how to make a living, but how to live. In addition to desiring that its graduates obtain the finest education possible, Gannon also desires that its men be of sound character. The Idea of a Uni- versity by John Henry Newman expresses what Gannon strives to achieve. With these thoughts in mind, the founders of Gannon College established and maintain the col- lege for the higher education of men through the harmonious development of religious and intellectual habits of its students. Intellectual habits are devel- oped by training in the humanities, philosophy, social, natural, and applied sciences with special emphasis on the methods in which the conclusions are drawn . . . 10 . . .The religious habits of a Gannon student are de- veloped by instruction in religious principles and by provisions for a Christian environment which en- courages the moral and spiritual growth of the individual. Since it is recognized that the individual must assume a position in his community, the college strives to maintain a balance between the technical, the professional, and the cultural. In order to achieve the religious and intellectual development of the student, each curriculum has a base core and a field of concentration. The base core includes those subjects which are essential for devel- oping a balanced man regardless of talents or special ambitions. The field of concentration is de- signed to give more specialized knowledge in a definite area. . . 13 t n  LIJ 1 Tin, I ' rfJ 11 t T| n Gr'-  .t. ;- id ...Although the majority of the students are Catholic, Gannon serves students of all creeds in a manner consistent with the philosophy and general purposes of the college and yet not offensive to their religious sensibilities. Every effort is made through en- vironment and through required courses to foster spiritual, cultural, and moral training. These objectives of Gannon College stem from a philosophy rather than from a situation and hence have not been influenced by external agencies. The basic philosophy of education of the institution pre- cludes any alteration of its objectives. The manner in which these objectives are achieved, however, has been substantially influenced by such factors as community need, and environment. 14 i ' i : 4cU U U4t tfitcaiit At the foundation of Gannon College is the administration. The students come and go, but the administration carries the traditions of the college and passes them on to Gannon's progeny. They are the ones who are the custodians of everything we associate with the Spirit of Gannon. Their efforts on our behalf are ample evidence that the administration is constantly striving to fulfill their duties. The counselling and guidance given freely are appreciated most by the students. But the unnoticed deeds of our administrators' dedication to their work are found only in books, behind desks, and in drawers; for it is in these places that records and reports are made and kept, and in which their necessary business of administration is carried on. For these efforts and for their interest and generous assistance in the direction of our lives, they shall be remembered. 16 I ' t Rev. Wilfrid J. Nash M.A., S.T.L., LITT. D. Moral integrity and intellectual competence are the most essemial of these characteristics. The faculty must exhibit the same moral and intellectual habits which the College strives to impart to its students. The College stresses teaching as the primary function of faculty members and makes excessive de- mands upon the quality of the instructional services it provides. The College is most appreciative of sincerity and dedication which characterizes the successful teacher. 20 ':U.-: .: =- — ■ j B 1 The Division of Business Administration has as its overall objectives the education of cultured gentlemen and provision for their specialization in accounting, business, finance, or management. The graduates have arrived at another mile- stone on the road to their final end. The dividing paths after graduation are innumerable. The future poses problems that will find solutions in the Class of '58 which will prove the reliability of the Gannon Grad. All the theory has built up an eagerness for practice which will manifest itself in bettering them- selves and the whole world. Inquisitiveness and a thirst for truth will be partially quenched as time passes. The all important final test for which they have prepared will bring with it the just reward. But only in the presence of their Creator will their de- sires be satisfied. 32 £MH ' 'I 1 ■ PAUL RICHARD AMENDOLA Erie, Pennsylvania B.S.— Accounting ERNEST H. Some are in the final stages of the process, and some are like stones that have recently been unearthed. In due time they will be a finished product like those who precede them. After some re- finement in the development of their religious and intellectual habits, they will come forth as a product of Gannon, a whole man. Intellectually they must develop in their individ- ual fields, which may include humanities, social, natural, and applied sciences. In order to complete the development of their intellect, they are provided with a solid foundation in philosophy. Religiously they must acquire habits and princi- ples which will qualify them to accept responsible positions in communities. For this, a Christian atmos- phere is available with corresponding courses for their spiritual and moral growth. After these men, like stones, have been subject to this rigorous developmen t which brings forth their true luster, they may then step forth into the world and emit that for which Gannon College stands. The many clubs, fraternities, and other organizations that make up the activities roster at Gannon College serve the stu- dent well in this quest for liberal education. Extra- curricular academic clubs enable the student to explore the practical side of his major field of concentration or become familiar with other arts and sciences. The clubs also give the Gannonite a cul- tural education, enabling him to enjoy the fine arts, from music to the Royal Game, or to enjoy foreign cultures as his own. The social life of the fraternities builds fellow- ship and spirit among the students and enhances the man's social poise. This is the activity focused on the maturing man, the man meeting with and as- sociating with others. ROTC is also an activity for the training of men in leadership and responsibility, training that might not otherwise be obtained in the classroom. These active, ambitious, leading students are not always found in the classrooms or at studies; the following pages will illustrate this statement by show- ing activity of, by, and for the Gannon student. 62 I « A Student u4kcU FIRST ROW: Al Bluemle, Bob Owczykowski, Joe Sorvodi, Al Rossi, Donald Zbieranowski, Bob Nash. Winning an award in the annual city Christmas parade, the band also marched in several other local parades. The band also played at basketball games and performed concerts. Band officers during this year were Cadet Captain Joseph Grippe and Cadet First Lieutenant Walter Ptaskiewicz. Lt. Col. Willis and Maj. Richards explain the parade route to Cadet Maj. Company 0—5, Pershing Rifles proved them- selves a crack drill team by winning first place in competition with many other drill teams during Erie's Christmas parade. In addition to marching in several other local parades the P-R's performed at many college functions, including the Military Ball and the Christmas Carnival. Company Commander was Cadet Captain John Ferrick. Cadet Second Lieutenant Albert Blumle, Plans and Training Officer, gives Cadets instruction in the. manual of arms. The Gannon Knights started the season by losing a tough game to Washington and Jefferson, 51—39. However, they bounced back with impressive victories over the National Aggies, Thiel, and Alli- ance. In that Aggie game, the all time school record of 111 points almost fell before the on-charging Knights. Canisius, consistently a nationally-rated team, pulled their game out of the fire in the last three minutes to beat Gannon, 73—66. After splitting the next two games, the Knights clashed with the Stubenville Barons. Led by their All-American can- didate Jim Smith, the Barons toppled the Knights by a score of 74—61. Next Gannon turned down Edin- boro, Lemoyne, and Youngstown in order, with Youngstown being the major upset of the year since the Knights won the game by a score of 86—77. The highlight of the season was Gannon's first home- coming game, but it just wasn't the Knight's day for the powerful Brown Indians of St. Bonaventure won 72—60. With four games left to play, Gannon was told that they had been entered in the N.A.I. A. regional tournament with the winner to go to the Nationals held at Kansas City each year. With this thought in mind, Milt Simon's boys finished the season with three victories in a row over Alliance, Thiel, and Edinboro, but they lost their final contest in a good game with Carnegie Tech 77—69. In this game John Soffa of Carnegie scored 39 points which made him the highest individual scorer against Gannon all season. N.A.I.A. Pete Russo and Bill Jowett shared the scoring laurels with twelve points apiece. The Knights had their first taste of victory as they downed the National Aggies. The big gun for Gannon was Ron Isackson, the team captain, who tallied twenty- four points. 84 Milt Simon employed the serv- ices of every team member in the Gannon-Thiel game as they rolled up over one hundred points. Pete Russo was the top man for Gannon with eighteen points. Val and Frank Durkac tied for second honors with twelve points apiece. Alliance put up a good fight against the Golden Knights for most of the evening until Russo and dependable Ron Isackson started hitting with their push shots at the key. They scored sixteen and twelve points respectively. 85 9i j ;,■'.. Hf | , J j 1 ■ 2 tr ¥ n % r t, . w « % j Smith and Company downed the Knights by thirteen points. Big Jim Smith had twenty-one rebounds which is par for him along with sixteen points. Pete Russo was high scorer for both teams with nineteen points. Canisius, a fast passing team, defeated the Knights by seven points. Dan Britz of Canisius had thirty points which made him sec- ond highest scorer for any oppo- nent of an opposing team that Gannon faced through the year. 86 P cd?? Lemoyne baffled by the Knights' Cat and Mouse offense gave Gannon its fifth win of the season. Russo and Jowett each col- lected twenty-two points for the evening. The Gannon Knights dropped their first annual home- coming game to the Brown Indians of St. Bonaventure by twelve points. Most of the game was a display of lost balls, fouls, erratic passes, and poor shots. Again Pistol Pete Russo was high scorer with nineteen points. Smooth moving Bill Jowett netted twelve points for second place honors. Reverend Addison Yehl Milt Simon coach The Browns and the Delta Sigs battle for the championship on a muddy field. Left to right are-. Joe Romeo, Al Bluemle, John Kozak and Don Zbieranowski. Touch football was inaugurated at Gannon only last year, but has proven so popular to the student body it has already become necessary to divide the league into two divisions, the Memorial league and the Strong Vincent league. There were fifteen entries in the two leagues and the teams were fairly evenly matched. The Strong Vincent league had seven teams, and after struggling through six games without a defeat, the Browns took the league title. Their biggest scare of the season came from the Tekes who held the league leaders scoreless until the last few minutes of play, when finally the Browns were able to squeeze across a score to win 6—0. The Browns scored the most points in both leagues, 162 points, and the opposition scored 120 against them. The Memorial league was dominated by the Delta Sigs whose seasonal record was 7—0. Besides displaying the best offensive power in their league, they lead both leagues in defensive ability, holding the opposition to a grand total of six points! That luck team was the Trojans who in the final minutes of the last game of the season, re- covered a fumbled punt attempt within the shadow of the Sigs goal post and pushed across a score. The champs of both leagues met at the Strong Vincent field for the battle royal of the year for the trophy which signifies Gannons Intramural football championship. This proved to be the game of the year, for each team placed players on the I.M. All Star team. Both teams were held scoreless for three quarters, when finally with just a minute remaining, Al Bluemle hit Don Zbieranowski with a long pass in the end zone to sew up the game and the crown, since the Browns had no time left to come back. The all star team consisted of Don Zbieranowski, Don Trojanow- ski and Al Bluemle of the Delta Sigs, Dick Boomer Tullio of the Unknowns, Hal Howard of the Trojans and Clark Carne also of the Trojans. The Strong Vincent All Stars consisted of Al Montevecchio, George Ciotti and Emidio Felix of the Browns, Joe Sarvadi of Gamma Tau Omega and Buddy Schlect of the Keglers. LEFT TO RIGHT: Jim Schumocker, Jim Zimmerman, Ed Hokaj, Charles Sellars, Bob Heibel. The Delta Sigs were again the champions in the intramural basket- ball league as they went unde- feated with a 10—0 record. This picture shows the jubilant faces of the I.M. All-Stars after they had just beaten the Gannon Freshman squad by the score of 76 to 69. STANDING, Left to Right are: Vic Glembocki, Tom Pontzer, Jim Fahey, Emidio Felix, Jim Roward. This year's Golf team is look- ing forward to a very successful season and is out to beat last year's record of four wins and two losses. They are practicing for May 15, when they travel to the Mead- ville Country Club to patricipate in the Allegheny Invitational Golf Tournament. Their schedule also in- cludes Edinboro, St. Bonaventure, Canisius, Youngstown, Fredonia and Allegheny. 93 This year's captain, a very promising prospect, is Danny Leal who hits consistently in the mid seventies. The only returning letterman on the tennis team is Captain Bill Brighton. Both Bill and coach Father Yehl hope to find some hidden talent among the Gannon Students and go on to another successful season. Captain Bill Brihgton STANDING: Dan Demmer, Edward Laskowski. KNEELING: Bill Brighton, Cosimir Szymanowski. FIRST ROW: Jerry Ditz, Ray Cornell, Mike Nowakowski, Leslie Meacock, Jim Abate, John Ross. SECOND ROW: Richard Fuchs, James Samuals, Bob O'Grody, Andy Hartman, John Mosier, M Sgt. Maxwell. | •• | J --V 1B|H - The rifle team has done a fine job of rebuilding this year after having lost most of their former stars through graduation. Gannon can count on them next year to have another great squad, and much credit is to be given to Sgt. Maxwell, Dick Fuchs, and Jerry Ditz for their great personal interest in the team. 94 Baseball returns to the Gannon sports scene under the capable guidance of manager Dick Fox. Many of the Gannon boys have played for the American Legion and other area leagues in the past summers and should give Gannon some good mate- rial. The schedule opens with the Knights traveling to Alliance on April 26 and to Buffalo State on May 3 for a double-header. They return home to play Alliance on the 12th of May and finish the season with Canisius on the 15th of May with another double-header. If as much time were spent at studying as there is at playing ping-pong, Gannon would be rated scholastically along with M.I.T. and Carnegie Tech. 95 Intramural bowling has always proven to be a popular sport at the school. This season the league had to expand to fourteen four-man teams who roll every Friday at Berry's Audi. The teams are com- posed for the most part of students, but both the priests and lay faculty have their teams. In fact the priests' faculty took the first half honors with a 29—15 record. Leading in the individual average department to this time is Joe Cyterski with his 183 average. The Cheerleaders in Action 0p%e HeH Abbot, Richard - 823 Wayne Ave., Erie, Pa.
