In art, in literature, in music, in industry, the reward ond the punishment ore olwoys the some. The reward is widespreod recognition; the punishment, fierce denial and detraction. When o man ' s work becomes a standord for the whole world, it also becomes a target for the shafts of the envious few. If his work be merely mediocre, he will be left severely clone - if he achieve a masterpiece, it will set o million tongues o-wogging. Jealousy does not protrude its forked tongue at the artist who produces a commonploce painting. Whotsoever you write, or point, or ploy, or sing, or build, no one will strive to surpass, or to slander you, unless your work be stamped with the seol of genius. Long, long after a greot work; or o good work hos been done, those who ore disappointed or envious continue to cry out that it con not be done. Spiteful little voices in rhe domoin of ort were raised against our own Whistler os o mountebank, long after rhe big world hod ocdaimed him its greatest artistic genius.
