SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT THE PENALTY OF LEADERSHIP In every field of human endeavor, he rhar is firsr musr perperuolly live in rhe whire lighr of publiciry. Whether rhe leodership be vested in o mon or in o manufocrured product, ennularion and envy ore ever ot work. In art, in literature, in music, in industry, the reward ond the punishment ore olwoys the some. The reward is widespreod recognition; the punishment, fierce denial and detraction. When o man ' s work becomes a standord for the whole world, it also becomes a target for the shafts of the envious few. If his work be merely mediocre, he will be left severely clone - if he achieve a masterpiece, it will set o million tongues o-wogging. Jealousy does not protrude its forked tongue at the artist who produces a commonploce painting. Whotsoever you write, or point, or ploy, or sing, or build, no one will strive to surpass, or to slander you, unless your work be stamped with the seol of genius. Long, long after a greot work; or o good work hos been done, those who ore disappointed or envious continue to cry out that it con not be done. Spiteful little voices in rhe domoin of ort were raised against our own Whistler os o mountebank, long after rhe big world hod ocdaimed him its greatest artistic genius. Multitudes flocked to Dayreuth to worship at the musical shrine of Wagner, while the little groups of those whom he hod dethoned and displaced argued angrily thor he was no musician ot oil. The little world continued to protest that Fulton could never build a steomboor, while the big world flod ed to rhe river bonks to see his boot steam by. The leader is assailed because he is o leader, and rhe effort to equal him is merely added proof of rhor leadership. Failing to equal or to excel, the follower seeks to depredate and to destroy - but only confirms once more the superiority of that which he strives to supplant. There is nothing new in this. It is OS old OS the world and os old as rhe human passions - envy, feor, greed, ambition, ond rhe desire to surpass. And it all ovoils nothing. If the leader truly leads, he remains - the leader. Moster-poet, moster- pointer, master-workman, each in his turn is assailed ond eoch holds his laurels through rhe ages. That which is good or greor moke s itself known, no motter how loud he clamor of denial. That which deserves to live - lives.
